So finally dad opened the door to scare him and the crane flapped his wings and walked right into the villa like he owned the place! We think the people who had been staying there before us had fed him every morning of their stay and he got used to the special treatment!

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why you don't feed the WILD animals.

I don't have a picture but when we stayed in 1996 (for my 11th birthday) at the Disney Institute my dad was downstairs watching the news and having his morning coffee when he heard a tapping sound like someone knocking on the patio door. He looked out and tapping his beak against the door was the massive bird. He was tall...I think some sort of crane? Anyway my dad kept the door shut and was trying to scare him away but the crane just stood there tapping away. So finally dad opened the door to scare him and the crane flapped his wings and walked right into the villa like he owned the place! We think the people who had been staying there before us had fed him every morning of their stay and he got used to the special treatment!
He was very friendly though and would have let me pet him if my mom had!
When he realized we weren't going to feed him (much to my disappointment) he walked right back out and went about his business. But he did come back every morning of our stay and tapped on the window at the same time!! That was the only time he actually came in though.

It was probably a Sand Hill Crane. They are about 4' tall and not afraid of anything (including cars as they back up traffic).

And I don't think I had posted this, but here's a picture taken in the Adventureland men's room (don't you hate when people sneak cameras into the stalls??? )

I've seen that photo. And yes, that is the Men's Restroom located in the Adventureland / Liberty Square breezeway.

It was taken earlier this year (May or so, IIRC) at around 3:30am by a member of the third shift custodial team. Needless to say, the 'gator was removed shortly after the photo was taken.

In Sept. we stayed at ASSP. One night we got back to the hotel about 1 am. I heard something in the bushes, but thought it was a rabbit. We stopped to speak to a security guard and an armadillo went across the sidewalk right by us. I wish I could have gotten a picture of it.

Had to post to say thanks to all for the pics. We're from over in Scotland. The only real wildlife we see is the common or garden 'midge' and some occasional drunk Scotsmen on the roam home from the pub!

Ever since I booked our first WDW trip next September its been in the back of my mind what weird and wonderful things we might come across. I should point out that I HATE spiders especially weird big funny-coloured ones with big spindly legs and although I don't mind snakes from a distance and behind glass or tamed wee ones, I'd definitely have a problem with a big one loose near me or my little one. Looks like my DH will be bed-checking on a regular basis! Totally gobsmacked at the story of the snake in the room with the nest! and as for the croc round the loo... WOW! Showed it to my DH and explained the story... he looked a little

Intrigued about these bugs that everyone is going on about ... can't remember the name, begins with a 'p'... what are they and how common are they to Florida/WDW?

Do you mean palmetto bugs? They're just cockroaches - I saw one when I was there last week under a water fountain in DHS. I didn't see any in the rooms. They're ugly, but harmless.

They're just BIG cockroaches...and they fly too...which makes them a little less fun than good 'ol NY cockroaches (German cockroach).

As for how common they are down here...I'd say somewhere between 'common as dirt' and 'common as water'. They're common!

Just google imaged them... eugh! Ah the joys of the Florida holiday... good job I'm a Disney addict or you'd never get me there... Suddenly those midges are seeming like no big deal!
