Has anyone stayed at the AKL in a standard room with no view of the animals? What was you opinion ? I might stay at this resort but can only afford the cheaper standard room and not the room with the view, will I be dissapointed?

Also, are there any room in the resort that allow smoking? If so where are they located does anyone know?

We were in a standard room with a Savanah view, but it was a bad view. We did not see much. So, we classed it as a non-viewing room.

I love AKL. There are many places to view animals and get upclose without having a savanah room. Try the bar outside by the pool, it overlooks some of the animals.

We stayed at AKL in a standard view room last August and loved it. There are plenty of public animal viewing areas. We had one just a few feet down the hall from our room. AKL is a great resort and the standard view rooms are a great value. I'd stay in one again without a second thought. As for the smoking question, I don't know.

We spent our first night in a standard view room this past May. It was on the 5th floor. Instead of having the railed balcony, ours was enclosed. Also, the thatch roof hung down pretty far. Thus, our room was very, very dark. To make matters worse, we had a bunk room, which is a little smaller than the rooms with 2 queens. While I've always enjoyed AKL, I HATED this room. On our second day, we moved to a standard savanna view room. Same room layout, but the railed balcony made all the difference. This room was so much brighter and more cheerful. On our last night of our 10-day visit, we stayed at CSR (everything was booked for the Memorial Weekend). We enjoyed this moderate resort every bit as much (but in a different way) as AKL. I'm not sure I'll ever book a standard parking lot view at AKL for even a night again or pay a high price for a savanna view. Of course, I've stayed in savanna view rooms before. If I'd never visited the resort before, I might have been completely satisified.

We stayed at the end of the Giraffe Trail in room 2035. We had a standard view(it was a parking lot view but all we could see was vegitation), smoking room. I would definitely stay here without savannah view again. The resort affords many different locations to view the animals during the day and night. We got a great code rate and really enjoyed this place. You could spend a few days just checking out the resort itself.

We stayed in a standard-view room just this past May. Room #5029. End of Giraffe Trail, overlooking the front of the hotel, on the fifth floor. Lots of trees out front, so we didn't see the parking lot, and rarely heard the buses at the nearby bus stop and NEVER heard the cars pulling up in front of the hotel. Balcony railings were open, not enclosed, but we did have a bunkbed in our room, and not sure if you want that. We got the AP rate, and a savannah-view room would have been $80 more per night. For a 10-night stay, it just wasn't worth it to us. Personally, Room #5029 was worth it to us, but I can see how if you got an enclosed balcony or other "negatives" of a standard-view room, you may not like it.
