Here's a listing of the nominees. Nicole Kidiman was not nominated this year (neither was Tom Cruise). Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider) is the younest Best Actress nominee ever. (I'm not familiar with her or this movie.) (I looked up Whale Rider -- it looks very interesting. Keisha is now 13 years old and this was her first movie.

DD11 and I just watched Whale Rider last weekend. It is a fabulous movie...I can't say enough about it...and a great film for pre-teen girls. The heroine is very strong and the movie has great messages for everyone and especially girls. Keisha Castle-Hughes definitely earned her nomination. She was terrific.

All through the movie DD kept saying "This is the best movie ever." and "We HAVE to buy this!".

Definitely check this one out!

Is Whale Rider on video? I have never heard of it before, but I love movies with a good message for young kids.

Whale Rider was a wonderful movie.
We saw it at the theater last summer.
It didn't get much press
DD (21) had it on her must see list.

I've seen Whale Rider on video and DVD at our grocery rental aisle.


I'm going to get it. I've heard so much about this movie. I think it will be perfect for our DD, age 12. I want to see it before the Oscar ceremonies.

Anna Paquin and Tatum O'Neal were younger but they were nominated (and won) in the Best Supporting Actress category. It's kind of funny that Paquin and Castle-Hughes are both New Zealanders and were nominated for their first movie roles.

The youngest winner of Best Actress is Marlee Matlin (won at age 21). I couldn't find the youngest nominee. I wonder if Elizabeth Taylor might fall into that category?
