And how would 2nd graders know about this?

Don't be mad at the kids. They are just curious. And certainly no details were explained in the article - and they shouldn't be. This is something that the parents and school (with hopefully some counselors) need to talk to the kids about without making them feel like they did something wrong. The article was so vague, it's not clear what exactly happened and where the teacher was so let the people who have the details of the situation handle it. It certainly isn't something we should all be gawking at or judging other parents - this is definitely one of those private matters that the public does not need to know the details.

Kids do seem to know about these things -- and experiment -- at a younger and younger age. I think this article is helpful in that it's a warning to parents.

We've had similar things happen in our neighborhood -- not quite this extreme but along the same lines -- and these are very nice, respectable and involved families.

I am not mad at the kids, but I am sorry I have had the talk with my DD "these are private areas, you don't show them to people etc etc." I think maybe there was a lack of guidance on the parents part here.
And come on...how could a teacher NOT see kids undressing and performing acts like that in the classroom? And before anyone makes the assumption that I am bashing teachers...I'm not, I am a teacher.

I don't even know what to say, I am shocked, disturbed, disgusted, etc. How would 2nd graders even know about this? And where was the teachers. IMHO the teacher failed for being clueless, but holy cow the parents TOTALLY failed here!

Children learn from some where or someone on how to behave :rolleyes1
They have either witnessed it by way of TV, movies or have had it done to them before at some point:sad2:

I'm willing to bet you've also told your daughter that she should share, she shouldn't run with scissors, and she should always brush her teeth.

There is something wrong with one or both of those children.

That's just sad.

I do think there was a serious lack of supervision going on in the classroom. This didn't happen during recess - it happened during classtime, when the children should have been too busy with tasks to be "playing doctor".

That said, I'm not surprised the kids knew about sex acts. The first time I had to explain oral sex to my kids, was when my JUNIOR kindergarten son got off the kindergarten school bus and said that some boys had told him that sex is... (and described woman on man oral sex). I had a brief chat with my 4yo son, and then went to school with him the next morning and alerted the teacher to what was being discussed on the school bus.

Her reaction? "Oh no, not again!"

Apparently a number of the children have teenage siblings. And little pitchers have big ears (and big eyes, too).

My son's kindy class had several "emergency" sex ed lessons that year.

That's just sad.

I'm not really talking about experimenting. I'm talking about doing it in a classroom.

A child who exposes himself to an entire classroom of kids will likely have some kind of emotional or mental issue. I know of problems with a middle schooler exposing himself to his teachers and fellow students. It wasn't "natural" or "normal". There is something wrong with him.

Maybe they were doing it in a closet or the bathroom or something. But if it was out in the open, it's a classroom distraction and those students need to be evaluated.

I'm going out on a limb and say that either one or both of this kids are being sexual abused at home. That is how they knew what to do .:sad1:

Sadly, I agree.:sad2: Hope that is being looked into. But still, where the heck was the teacher???:confused3

How sad. I think it's very likely that one of the kids is being sexually abused (either one of the kids participating, or one from the "audience" if there was a kid who orchestrated this.) :sad1:

I would hope they're investigating, but I'm not willing to automatically jump to that conclusion. Maybe one of the kids walked in on their parents. I think this is a situation where calm and rational thinking is a better way of dealing with it.

I think there's a world of difference between a middle schooler exposing him or herself and this behavior by second graders.

There's just as much possibility that was innocent as far as the kids are concerned and it's not necessarily that the parents aren't teaching the kids that their body parts are private.

OP, I agree with you. Although some have stated it is up to it is understandable for you to have concerns about this. No matter what the circumstances, I think most of us are somewhat surprised it happened in a 2nd grade classroom. In my area, most 2nd graders have closer supervision than an older class including a teacher's aide. Does seem a bit odd nobody noticed.

Tinkerbellie, agreed that the details do not have to be made public, but anytime an article is printed about something like this, it is normal for the public to discuss and have opinions, just as the OP did. I don't consider that gawking.

depending on how large the class is and what was happening at the time, it is VERY likely that the teaher didn't realize this was happening. How many times did it happen? HOw long did the instance occur?

I'm not ready to fire the teacher....yet...but holy God would I have CPS all over those families doing a full investigation.

This is not normal..... The article says the second incidence involved oral sex; now way should a 2nd grader do that out of curiosity! I agree with the posters that said either one or both of the children have been sexually abused in some way; either physically or by watching/seeing pornography- and letting a 2nd grader view pornography IS a form of sexual abuse.... Very sad!

I agree. The parents need to be investigated, as does the teacher. But if the teacher didn't know, they didn't know.... If the teacher was present and didn't report it- that is a different story.... The teacher could have stepped out of the class, could have been working one on one with another student and not seen what was going on in the corner, ect.... I'm sure the police will figure it out!
