An open letter to teenagers who rolled their eyes at me in the line at the Subway

In my family, eye rolling from those under age is a major offense. It shows disrespect to their elders and can hurt feelings of those of the same age.

So I do not agree that the kids "did nothing wrong" and "congrats to the teens for keeping it together". There seems to be a portion of the kid population ( and I say kid deliberately because that's how they behave ) that think it's ok to be vocal with unkind verbal abuse. That they can say anything, laugh at anyone, roll eyes at anyone.....hhhmmm, kind of sounds like the school bully mindset doesn't it? I have several teen friends who when they act like that, I let them know it is not acceptable around me. And they respect that.

Anyway - being totally truthful since I will be flamed anyway, I am an eye roller. I admit it. HOWEVER, I know the rules!! You NEVER let the "rollee" SEE YOU! Who is teaching the proper technique these days - no one?

And for the OP - I do not think you looked like a loon, I think you are being gracious under fire here. If I had been there, I would have thought, "Oh that poor woman! I've had days like that!" THEN I would have rolled my eyes back at the office.

:teeth: You gotta have a sense of humor! Good for you...from one eye roller to another. :rotfl:

Maybe adults and teens a like should be a bit more empathetic towards others and not so quick to roll their eyes, make snarky comments, or rash judgments about people they have only seen for a few minutes.

:sunny: :goodvibes :grouphug: :cloud9:

A friend calls these "snapshot moments." None of us want/need our lives to be judged on a snapshot. Because no one looks great in every one of them.

I agree with Bob Slydell...are we entirely sure they were rolling their eyes at Miss Inga Depointe?? Maybe it was about something or someone else.

Also, let me add that I think people are way too bent out of shape over the concept of eye-rolling. Especially since that very smiley is used a WHOLE heckuva lot on the DIS.

If you remember, I didn't start this with a post about what rude teens did to me in a Subway. Someone asked me and I told them.

I started it because I saw the look on their faces and realized how I looked and thought, they think I'm an idiot, and I know I look like an idiot, but they just couldn't understand the pressure I'm under right now. I wanted to say, hey, I know I'm looking weird, but I've got all this stuff going on. But that would have been even more stupid.

I started wondering if kids ever realize how much we have to worry about. As someone else pointed out, maybe it's better that they didn't.

I'm not arguing about rude teens. I'm not arguing about anything. I'm just saying that maybe the next time we think about rolling our eyes we could think maybe the person is having a bad day and give them a break.

Amen to that. And I hope that is exactly what you are thinking the next time you see a parent struggling for a few moments with non-perfect acting small children. :sunny:

I kinda miss the old DIS - where someone could write something from the heart and that would be that. Now it's pointing out what the OP knew was her faux pas in the story. Reading her story, I got that she was having a bad day - maybe even a real frustrating streak. Makes me grateful for the small problems I have.

One reaps what one sows.

Augghhh! I'm done, that did it!

I have told you on numerous occasions that a non-perfect kid is no problem, that it's parents who ignore them, sip cocktails while the kids are tripping waiters and the like. You must be one of those parents or I don't know why you'd be so touchy about this!!!!

To most of you on this thread, thank you for getting it. I think, actually, I was wrong in the OP, I think I can see that kids aren't meant to understand grownup stuff, that's the beauty of being young. No, I'm not so fragile that I can't overlook an eyeroll.

I think someone touched on it when they said about feeling old. I think I felt really old at that moment. I was thinking, no wait, I know I look like an old grump but I'm really a great person, I'm just under stress right now.

I know it's not easy to not think, idiot, when you see someone doing something idiotic. I'd like to try to work on that, myself, but I can see that identifying and ridiculing idiots is somewhat of a hobby for some of you, so whatever floats your boat.

Bye!!! :)

I totally got what the OP was saying because I have had a 6th grader I was coaching "roll her eyes at me" when I was going over some things...

Just thought I would add, I thought you were in the subway line (as in train) OP, not at a sandwich shop! LOL on me!

:lmao:

You just can't stop yourself from making judgments about other people and yet you get upset when you think someone has done that to you.

Man, all this 'attack the OP' who did not flame anyone or do anything wrong (even admitted her shortcoming) :confused3

The DIS really sucks lately :sad2:

Agreed.

Sorry but you must have missed this little dig by the OP "You must be one of those parents or I don't know why you'd be so touchy about this!!!!" Seems like an attack to me. :thumbsup2

I also feel the OP attacked the teens with the title of the thread too. She also was ticked at teen drivers yesterday. Do you see a pattern here.

She stopped in a road and wondered why others were upset. She needs to pull off the road (see Captain Obvious knows all) and then talked to the lady who she just saw in an accident and give her the number. Doing this is a driving lane is not a good idea, could even cause an accident.

First, I do not judge this particular situation by what the OP may have posted before in an entirely different situation.

You have your opinion (which you use to flame and derail)
I have mine.

In the previous thread, like Duhhh, there was an ACCIDENT.
The OP was attempting to do-good by offering to help.
She didn't just up and block traffic for her health.
Who knows if it would have been easy, or even safe, to move over.

But, once again, let the flames continue!!!

Yes, but the self-annointed Dis Miss Manners is allowed to make judgements, attacks, be rude, not take others situations into consideration etc. It's okay for everything to be all about her, but its not okay for other people to have the same attitude. Get it?

Apparently, though, she does have her fan club. Maybe we should let this thread be a clique thread for those people and start a "captain obvious" clique thread.

Yup I do get it.

Wishing on a star - The OP was the one who brought up the teen drivers in this thread.

Sounds like a clique to me!

Good idea.

BTW the OP was the one to make the snide CO remark, but since she made it I must have deserved it. :confused3

Apparently, I do not deserve the Captain Obvious title, because it is not obvious to me why the OP is being attacked. I'm going to assume prior history and move on, I guess. Sorry you had a bad day yesterday, OP, and I hope the rest of the week is better for you.

There was no prior history. I don't even remember ever posting on one of her threads before. :confused3 I did not post on the accident thread either.
