An odd question regarding SW points

a few weeks ago I received a call from Chase bank while I was on vacation, alerting me to the fact that someone had used my cc info (not the actual card) to make several thousand dollars' worth of purchases. Chase recognized the red flags right away and called me, and were very good about removing the charges, shutting down the card, and issuing me a new one, which was a bit of a bummer since I was then on vacation without my cc.

When I got home I noticed that I'd gotten RR points for the fraudulent transactions. They're still on my RR account. What is the protocol in this situation? Do I get to keep them, do I need to alert SW, or what?

Wow - great question! You know I've noticed they issue the points up front, not after the payment has been made so I'm not sure how they adjust (or if they do) when there are credits issued after the fact. Hopefully someone will be able to give you a definitive answer. We had a fraud attempt on my DH's SWA but I'm pretty it wasn't actually billed, it was just an online attempt that they caught.

That is a good question. I just went to check my husbands account, because the same thing just happened to us, a charge for $1830. I didn't see any points in his account though.

not necessarily SW but i noticed on my disney card I was rewarded the Dream dollars and then had to cancel a cruise and they took back all the dream dollars earned from that cruise booking out of the next statement. It could be a similar case where they let you keep them but don't reward your future purchases, or they just remove them on the next billing cycle when they catch the mistake.
Any charges should come up as canceled or returned and not paid off.

They will either take the points back, or not credit any more points until you earn the ones they already deposited. There's very little chance you'll end up with any "free" points out of this.

The way the points work is that you get points when you spend, and then points are subtracted if your account is credited (except if it is because of a payment made). I recently had a fraudulent charge on my SW card as well, and the way they fixed it is by crediting my account for that charge as though I returned it to the merchant. So I had $150 spent and earned 150 points, but then I was credited $150 by that merchant (even though it was Chase reversing the charge) so then that deducted 150 points. I ended up back at 0. I would imagine this is the normal way this works, so you might see if that's what they've done for you.

ETA: No points actually credit to your SW account until your credit card statement closes. So while your Chase account may show you earned those points, by the time your statement closes and it transfers over to SW the deduction for the credited amount will be taken out of your points earned.

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks! I guess I'll just keep an eye on it and see what happens. I was wondering what would happen if you wanted to book a trip and were unsure whether all of the points were really yours. IOW, I'm not sure how many are mine and I have a flight I need to book.

I do believe they will be backing the points out. Our Chase SW card was hacked last month too. And another card I have with Chase was hacked in June.
Needless to say, not too happy with Chase right now!

If the points are in your SW account, you should feel safe using them. Points from your Chase card don't transfer to your SW account until your statement closes, so they dump over monthly. When your credit card statement closes, Chase adds up all of your points from your spending and then subtracts points for any credits from returns you've made, etc. That gives the net total points you actually earned that month, and then Chase moves those points over to your SW account. If the credit for your fraudulent charge doesn't post until your next month, it will just be subtracted from your points you earn from your spending next month. It won't be taken out of your SW account. I hope that all makes sense. Long story short, if they've been moved to your SW account, you should use them without worrying about it.
