An intriguing study on autism

I talked to a special ed teacher and she could think of no past/present students with autism that have had siblings that close in age. In my own experience with mainstreamed students with autism, this has not been the case either. I'm curious to hear thoughts/opinions/experiences from actual parents of children with autism.

I'm curious too. Over 660,000 siblings studied is pretty huge.

Interesting. I have an 11 aussie son, and he is 20 months younger than his sister; however I also know of a family with the older child with aussie but a younger average sibling.

One of my close girlfriend's DS5 has been diagnosed as autistic.

They are in a study about siblings , don't know the details, but they have gone to North Carolina a few times to have his sisters tested, he is also in the study.

His older sister is 6 and younger sister is 2, neither have autism.

Interesting. My sister has two young boys, born 16 months apart. My younger nephew is autistic.

It's good to see both science and medicine moving on after the whole vaccine fraud. See: http://www.bmj.com/content/342/bmj.c5347.full

Now that that avenue has been explored and completely discredited, new research can be done and hopefully new treatments found as we start to understand more. This study clearly points to a genetic basis for autism and may help us start to understand risk factors.

It's easy to say, "yes, but that's not my experience," but remember that the science in looking for trends, not individual experiences.

I saw that this morning on one of the morning shows. It doesn't put them any closer to finding the actual cause for Autism, but I found it very interesting that they said that children conceived less than a year after their sibling were more likely to be Autistic. The person who was talking about it thought perhaps the mothers might not have built up the reserves of folate and iron (I think) that the second child needs after depleting them for the first child. I hope further studies will help them to learn more.
