An interview question for teachers

A question for fellow teachers......How would you answer this question?

"Being able to look up information and resources on the web is an important skill. Explain how you go about looking up information on the web. How do you verify that the information you found is trustworthy and of use to you and your students?"

I am obviously on a job hunt! I don't know why, but I am having a difficult time putting my thoughts into words on this question. I think my brain just may be done for today! But thank you in advance for any guidance you can give.

The internet has reputable sources just like all other sources of information including newspapers, magazines, tabloids, text messaging, a phone call from a friend, the tv... In today's society more than ever, judgments have to be made on whether or not information is from a strong source- tabloids and phone calls from friends with rumors are not strong sources while tv CAN be a strong source (news shows vs sit coms).

Search engines (google, yahoo...) bring up both strong and weak sources. A strong source can back up their information with further research (minus wikipedia, that's a site to avoid). These include Professional journals, Associated Press articles, research sites (encyclopedia type sites) and many non-profit organizations.

I would respond that I would collaborate with my Library Media Specialist to locate resources. This would be done during a colaborative planning session prior to instruction.

If resources were needed on a spur of the moment basis, I would begin with the resources provided through links on the library's website. Ideally, these would be subscription databases that are provided by the school and or school district.
