Hello everyone, or I gusee I should say goodbye. I came into work this morning to discover that I have been denied access to the DIS by my company. I've tried everything to get around it but to no avail. Seems I've been denied access to every forum in the world. Somehow Magic Trips managed to escape their all seeing eye so I guess it will be my new home for the time being, at least. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed being part of the DIS for the last 3 year and how much I'll miss all the dear friends I've made here. Your invaluable advice, compassion, understanding and caring is surpassed by no other board. I will be thinking of all of you as we enjoy our next trip in October but will be saddened not to be able to come home and share our experirnce. Dahed now is my ability to come here tomorrow and tell you all about our Lion King experience tonight. So it is with a heavy heart that I wish you all the best life has to offer. Keep the magic alive and be kind to one another. My profile lists my e-mail address and I would love to hear from you from time to time so I'm kept in the loop. Looks like I had better start thinking about a home computer. I love you all and God Bless!

Kathy (ILUVDXL)

What a bummer. I am sorry she works for a place like that.

:( that's a huge bummer!!! :(

That's too bad.:( Maybe she will get net service at home and can pop in from time to time?

If she sees this, hope to see you again Kathy/ILUVDXL!:)

If anyone talks to her ask her make sure she checks back. I thought that happened to my work computer the last few days but it was just a glitch in the system.....

So sorry to hear that, and yes it is time to start thinking about a home compurter, and Dell always seems to have great deals going on. Good luck with trying to stay on Magic Trips.
Heidi

I know she can't read this, but am hoping that someone will email her the replies eventually.

Another one here that will miss ILUVDXL. Sorry that had to happen, but, its the perfect excuse for a home computer. Ill keep my fingers crossed that we see her around here sometime soon.

Thats kind of strange. I thought most places only ban the dirty sites?

Good luck getting back on ILUVDXL:D

Yes, have her check back. When I got to work on Monday I thought the same thing that my company blocked this site. Come to find out it was just hang ups with the Disboards and the problem with Google.

We will miss you! Best wishes and save your pennies for a home computer.

I can relate! This just happened to me yesterday and I was so upset. But I called my I/T people and asked them to unblock it and they did. I had been complaining to my fiance about it and he was so relieved when I got it back. He sent me an email saying "Thank goodness, I wasn't looking forward to facing you while you were DISbarred!"

Does Kathy have any friends in her I/T department she can talk to?

P.S. Mine was definately blocked by my company (it was our internal "Access Denied" message). But it sure is a coincidence that it happened right after the disboard problems and that it happened to more than one person. I wonder if all of our unsuccessful attempts to access the DIS flagged something in the blocking software.

A lot of companies don't want their employees surfing the 'net during working hours. And doesn't matter if ILUVDXL happened to come in early, only surf during lunch or stayed late - that fact that she might do that doesn't mean that other people in the office might be spending their workdays surfing.

I (thankfully) work from home and I can tell you that I spend WAY longer on this site than I should! Thank goodness I'm my own boss! But I do know of people who spend large amounts of their work day surfing and not working.

For a lot of places where the employees have no real legitimate work-related reason to be online, the employers are denying internet access completely. As much as it might suck, it is well within their rights to dictate how their equipment is used. You'd be surprised how much these things are abused.

You could try finding a Proxy site. They let you surf the web without an ISP address I believe. Thats how the students at the school I work at get past our block (it blocks most forums...).

Distriv, can you tell us how to do that?

Also, I just wanted to add that I totally understand that our companies have every right to block websites and that Internet abuse is a huge workplace problem. I knew I didn’t have a leg to stand on as far as complaining about this site being blocked. I was just honest with them and told them that I use this site strictly for personal reasons and it’s how I entertain myself when I don’t have any work to do. I know my boss would much rather have me doing this than wandering the halls or reading a novel at my desk. At least you look busy when you’re surfing the net.

I tried googling it but the ones I found you have to pay for. I've never used it because the employee user names don't have a block on them, only the students do. I'm trying to remember the name of one of them but so far no luck, if it comes to me I'll be sure to check back.

Can I speak from the IT point of view? As a network administrator, this statement scares the you know what out of me. We don't randomly block sites, there is always a specific reason for doing so. Just because we don't tell the employees doesn't mean it doesn't exist. We recently had to block websites where people could download screensavers because, although they were innocuous in the beginning, they started bringing other files onto the systems along with the screen shots. People here were P.O.'d, but too bad. We can't risk taking down the network so they can have a cool looking screensaver. If you tried to circumvent a block on my network, you'd be in huge trouble for misuse of company resources, and I'd be the first one to rat you out. Ok, off my soapbox.

Kathy is very bummed about this. She e-mails me regularly, and told me this morning.

On a brighter note, she and her DH Joe are going to see the stage production of "The Lion King" tonight!

I did mention to her that it might be time to get a home computer . . .

I was briefly blocked at my work (a school). First let me say I only DIS at work before or after work hours; I even have been known to give up lunch. While I see this as "my time", I know at work they don't consider it MY computer, it's theirs.
That said, they use a blocker called "BESS", don't know what it stands for. Any blocked site produces a screen with a picture of a black lab (Bess, I assume) and it says "Bess can't go there" with the reason the site is blocked. You can appeal a block. Most things won't work though--it is a waste of time to try to appeal "humor" sites(can't access the Onion at work either), or anything they judge in bad taste. They specifically block UNMODERATED forums. I sent an appeal in mentioning that the DIS boards are moderated, and in a few days it was unblocked. I never heard anything from the higher ups about it, although I was prepared to.
See if your blocker lists a criteria for what is blocked. If they just choose sites to block, I think you're out of luck.
