An Earnest Request To Dial Back On The Acronyms Just A Bit, Mmmkay?

either Dear or Damn. Depends on the Day.

DD = Disney Daughter
DH = Disney Husband
DS = Disney Son
DW = Disney Wife

And, for the record, I like the acronyms...er...initialisms...they make me feel special. :D

Although it also means Darling or Dear (according to the cheat sheet).

I've seen DH and in the next breath they are saying their husband isn't the biggest fan of Disney so in that case it would be Darling or Dear not Disney.

I understand most of the initials and acronyms are shorthand for what would be said or written in full.

But, in real life, does any one ever say Dear Son or Darling Son or Disney Son?

it's a shorthand on the internet for referring to your spouse and has been for years and years and years (it is not a DIS thing exclusively). I think just saying "S" or "D" or "H" or "W" is a little more ambiguous. I often refer to my kid by his first initial... so is it that? what if my dear wife is wilma or my dear son is scott or my dear husband is henry or my dear daughter is dana? with the D in the front you know it is referring to title within family and not name. I'm not sure that it matters what the D is for or how you mean it in your heart or if that's how you'd refer to them in real life. I don't call my kid "G" in real life even though I use that almost exclusively online. It just clearly denotes the S means Son etc.

Dropping in to remind everyone the acronyms in use on the Boards are family-oriented and pertain to Disney.

Thanks!

LOL to this post. I've only been on the site a month or two and at first, didn't have a clue what the heck people were talking about and explaining. I still only half have a clue now, but can usually figure out the context and whether I really need to know (or care). And it isn't going to change by asking people to stop. LMAO.

I've been on the DIS since 2008. At first, I found ALL of the acronyms confusing. Over time, I've learned *most* of them. I still get a surprise from time to time.

I think one of the things you will find here is that a lot of the members post while at work, or in other situations where they have a limited amount of time to spare. ASM is a LOT faster to type that All Star Music, PoTC is a lot faster to type that Pirates of The Caribbean, etc., so the acronyms make it easier to give a reply, to answer someone's question.

Besides that, the acronyms have been here a long time, I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon, so either give up on the DIS, or start learning what those acronyms mean.

I've been on the DIS a long time. I'm able to read posts and know what they're saying. But I don't often type using acronyms. But I type fast. And I think slower than I type. So for me, it's easier to fully type it out than think of what the abbreviation is.

Internet forums all over create ones that work for them..ok I have to admit I started to talk to my family about our upcoming Sep 2017 trip and used the words ADR, MB and WDW and got a blank stare lol I forgot that I need to wait a while still before introducing them into what the lingo is. That being said I have said my darling husband to other people especially on facebook. But that's the only context that I would use the DH= Darling Husband (what I mean when I say DH) aside from here on the DIS.

I've been speaking in acronyms since I could speak. I think that's part of what makes DIS different.

For me, it depends on the thread. If the original poster is relatively new and asking a first visit type of question, I'll lessen the use of acronyms to avoid confusion for the OP. But if it's a seasoned poster asking or a long thread with many responses, it's just easier to respond with acronyms.

I think it becomes like a second language and you are unaware that you are using it while typing. It would be a hard habit to break, Sort of like Spanglish.

In another thread, some of us are having a laugh at the prevalence of acronyms (MK, RD, EMH, and so on) on these boards.

Look, I get that there's a glossary of what those acronyms mean. I also get that this board is a text-based medium, and some posters like to take shortcuts for the sake of brevity.

But, sometimes the use of acronyms in these threads can get a bit frustrating, especially to the casual DIS reader (like myself) and/or to fans who can't go to Walt Disney World as often as we'd like (like myself).

So I'd like to request that posters consider dialing it back on the use of acronyms just a bit, if you don't mind too awfully much. I think that using acronyms for the theme parks (MK, AK, DHS and Epcot (which is itself an acronym), and using shorthand for family members (DD, DS, MIL, and so on) is reasonable and to be expected. But for individual attractions, restaurants, procedures (Space Mountain instead of SM; Pecos Bill's instead of PB's, or Rope Drop instead of RD, respectively), I think that maybe spelling it out might be a little helpful to some users of these boards.

Just a thought.

TIA (Thanks in Advance)

Agreed.

Worst of all is these yahoos that call their children DS or DD. This is your child and they deserve better than a friggin acronym even if we're talking non-serious interwebs message boardery.

Yeah, I think this would be a completely different board without the acronyms...the only one I don't use is the DW, DH, etc etc.... because I've never understood the point of that one. But I've been describing attractions and hotels in acronym since before the DisBoards existed...so I'm not gonna stop now.

DH does a lot of Ham Radio stuff. When he's on and speaking to folks around the world there is a LOT of initialism being used. I wish I were just DW to him there. I don't even remember what the initials are but the commonplace jargon for "wife" there is something along the lines of ex-young-lady. Blech.

It took some getting used to for me, but it conveys the information that is most useful to other posters, and it's no less personal than using the pronouns and adjectives they replace. My kids haven't raised a fuss about it, mainly because they don't follow my posts.

You mean EYL? :thumbsup2

It might have been XYL but yeah something like that. I remember being annoyed...and then getting over it. In the grand scheme THAT was a hill not worth dying on LOL...at least not when half the spare room was taken over by his radio equipment and he erected a 40 foot antenna in our backyard.
