An Aussie's Journey. Our final meal before coming home (food porn)....the last post!

It's great to finally put a face to the name. You have a beautiful smile.

I am liking the slightly larger pictures that you are putting in now, it is much better for seeing the details. And that margarita looks heavenly.

I love the marshmallow shots of Daisy, how beautiful those flower displays must have been IRL.

Sorry to hear about the headache, maybe you should have had more margaritas hahahahaha.

Waiting for that group shot since several people had cameras out, I didn't bother so I need a copy :thumbsup2

I don't think it's necessary to apologize for speaking ill of the coffee at WDW, I'm not a coffee drinker, but tons of people complain that it is awful - My DH & Mom are among that group!

I have no problem with you posting the picture from our meet, I was planning on posting the one I have.......

It was really great to be able to meet you that day :goodvibes

I can't believe your boys went to visit all the characters without you!

Hey!! I subbied the other day but haven't had the chance to catch up until now!! Great pics of everything!! I love that "house" of yours! LOL! especially with those pretty fireworks over them. Glad you got to go to the Cinco meet...sorry I missed it...it was our last day and we stayed at MK all day!! Hope it was fun! I have to agree, it was a little crowded than predicted! Can't wait for more pics!!

Loving your trip report so far! I agree, the bigger photos are much easier to see. Sorry to hear that you got sick. I would be uspet at the others meeting the characters without me too!

Aside from the headache, it looks like you had a good day :) The salmon you got at Sunshine Seasons looks fabulous, and I don't even like fish (unless it's still swimming or in stick form, anyway... I'm weird)!

More fish story coming up....

Welcome home! Hope your flight was good.
I am still here, but leave on Wed, so tomorrow is our last day! So sorry I couldn't get to the 2nd meet, but timing was all wrong.
I am loving your photos - the new camera is doing a fine job (not to mention the person behind it!)
Sorry to hear you got sick - I'm surprised that it hasn't happened to us yet - in and out of a/c all the time takes its toll!!
The weather is still hot, and we had a good storm this afternoon!
OK - I look forward to your continuing story! :surfweb:
Keep up the good work!!

Hi Heather! Hope your trip is going fine and that you have a safe flight home. How's your new camera doing? I hope you write a TR too as I can't wait to see your photos....
And if we're ever in Brisbane/Melbourne, we could possibly organise an OZ DisMeet ourselves!

Great report! We're staying at the POR in Dec and glad to hear of experiences of fellow Aussies. Photos are fantastic too! Looks like the new camera got put to good use.

Thanks! I just noticed the little TR link in your signature and will be checking that out soon!

Thanks! I agree with you about the photo format. I've loaded some in the smaller format and will use them in the TR. But any new ones I load will be in the larger format.

I'll be loading this picture shortly.

It's okay! I know I will get over the betrayal...I have to come to terms with the fact that Mickey cheated on me :rotfl2: . I don't know how long this will take :confused3 and I might need some therapy.

Hey Keala. Sorry we missed each other at POR and at the meet. I'm enjoying your TR too.

I'm hearing you too. Will be sticking with the larger photo size...after I work through the ones I've already uploaded into photobucket.

By about 6 pm, we were all refreshed and ready to head out again. My headache was not completely gone and I realized that I was starting ‘something’ as by this stage, I also had a very scratchy and sore throat. This was not a good sign!

Still, we pressed on back to Epcot and used the Test Track fast passes that I claimed earlier.

We then headed into the World Showcase, after a quick stop. There’s a hidden mickey in the flowers but I’m not sure it shows in this shot.
USA2010Holiday266.jpg

We heard Off-Kilter playing between the Canadian and United Kingdom pavilions and dug in for the night to enjoy their Celtic music. Sadly, no photos – we were have such a good time there.

In 2005, the Famous Fish and Chips provided us with one of our favourite meals. We couldn’t wait to get back.
USA2010Holiday269.jpg

Somehow, the meal didn’t live up to our memories but DS was happy enough.
USA2010Holiday272.jpg

We also found Neverland in the United Kingdom…my money is on the croc to win this duel.
USA2010Holiday270.jpg

I wanted to stay for Illuminations but my head and throat were completely unbearable by this stage. So, we went home.

DH couldn't resist taking a couple of snappy shots on the way out.
I’ve never seen Mickey or Minnie in Hoe-Down costume before.
USA2010Holiday274.jpg

And Spaceship Earth lit up at night almost looks as pretty as my house.
USA2010Holiday275.jpg

The wonders of a fast shutter speed!
USA2010Holiday276.jpg

So, aside from a scratchy throat and a sore head, Day 2 exceeded expectations as well.

Post script – A health update
I’m supposed to be back at work this week. Thanks to this cough and cold, I’ve been ordered to take this week easy and bed rest by my doctor. I’ve been on antibiotics and codeine for the last 2 days and I think it’s finally doing the trick. I’m glad I’ve had this TR to fill in my time…

[Up next – My Missing Extended Family]

It's official. DH is returning to attend a 3 day conference at Coronado Springs Resort in late October 2010.

Within 24 hours of our return, DH was advised by his work to consider attending this conference. He's been mulling it over for the last week and has decided that it will be worth his while to attend. He's officially registered today.

So, I'm now thinking of possibly accompanying him for this trip. We may likely leave DS at home with the grandparents as it seems like we will have to fly straight to from Melbourne to Orlando (probably 24 hours), attend the conference and then fly straight back to Melbourne (another 24 hours). I must admit that the thought of all that flying for 3 days is something that I'm not keen on doing and am having serious thoughts about staying home with DS.

I'm not likely to make a decision either way until all the flights and hotel details are sorted out for DH...which will take us into June/July. I also don't know if he'll be asked to make a detour stop in San Francisco; but in the meantime I will keep an eye out for flight deals.

Great update of epcot! Sorry you weren't feeling 100%!! I still haven't tried the fish and chips there...hopefully next time! I love that pic of the monorail and spaceship earth!

Wow...that Maybe trip in october sounds painful! 24 hours straight flying?!?! That's crazy! But another chance to go to Disney World??? Why not?

Hope you feel better soon!!

Just finally got on over here :goodvibes:

Great trip report. It is always interesting getting another Aussie perspective :thumbsup2 GREAT sense of humour....nice dry wit :lmao:
And yes... mentioning that brown swill I believe they call coffee? Especially as a Melbournian (I know you can't help it ;) ) that swill is just VILE compared to proper coffee.

I agree it is nice to put a face to a name too!

Just a comment on the fish and chips. I understand why North Americans are obsessed with the fish and chips and french bakery, but I would never expect many Aussies to be overly 'excited' with it.
We have some of the best fish and chips in the world. The Fish coops and fresh fish markets etc. And we also have amazing bakeries (near me at least) :cloud9:

FEEL BETTER SOON  ---:wizard:---> :goodvibes

Hmmmm, 2 entire days of flying for just 3 days at WDW - I might even think twice about that! BUT, October is a really nice time to go and the Food & Wine Festival will be going on.......

Is there no way to add maybe 2 additional days onto this trip? It would certainly be worthwhile then but yeah, 2 days of travel for 3 days of play, I'd have to mull that one over.

Oh and I too agree about the coffee. I didn't drink coffee for the entire time we were in the US, except for the 2 times I was able to fight my way through the crowd at Starbucks. No wonder Starbucks does such a roaring trade :rotfl2:.

Loving the pictures of the flower characters, they are amazing. How clever people are to be able to make those things.

I would be all over that and a bag of chips! I hope it works out to where you can make it!

Hi Queenie! Welcome to my TR. Yeah...I figured that if you weren't a Sydneysider (I know you can't help this either :)) that we would be meeting for decent coffee and pastries (bakeries are good near me too) on a regular basis. :thumbsup2

My son loves Fish and Chips; and the Fish and Chips at the UK pavillion takes my husband and I back to the days when we were working in the UK and enjoying real English F&C. I suspect that the trip down memory lane made us romanticise the Epcot place 5 years ago...or perhaps the food was genuinely better then.

Hmmmm, 2 entire days of flying for just 3 days at WDW - I might even think twice about that! BUT, October is a really nice time to go and the Food & Wine Festival will be going on.......

Not just the F&W Festival...but Harry Potter World! If I go, I'll most definitely be cheating on Mickey with Harry!
I'm sitting more on the side of NOT going at this stage.

Me too...but we'll have to wait and see.

In bed at the moment with the laptop; so I'm resting but keeping busy.

This trip started because my DB wanted to take his twins to the World. And at the end of it all, we had 6 adults (DB, his Girl Friend, our parents, DH and me) and 3 kids (the twins and DS) on this trip. They decided to stay off-site.

We had planned to catch up a number of times before WDW:
  • Plan #1 was that we would meet up in Miami and travel to the World together. They drove down to the Keys on the day we went to the Everglades and we didn’t catch up for dinner as planned.
  • Plan #2 was that the Melbournians would meet in Melbourne Florida. I believe our cars passed each other in the main street of the historic center – but DGF wasn’t feeling well and they pushed on to Orlando so we didn’t meet up.
  • Plan #3 was that we were going to meet at Epcot on 5/5. They were all tired from the traveling and didn’t want to come to the parks.

So today was the day that we would hook up as I had arranged a Pirate Adventure out of POR for the 3 kids. This was my birthday present to the twins, who had celebrated their 11th birthday in April.

It was great to catch up with everyone and find out how each other's trips had gone.

Photos of the day are going to be scrappy as I haven’t gotten permission to post any of their mugs on this site.

The kids looked really happy to get on board the ‘Pirate Ship’. I have to say that the CM did a fabulous job in managing the parents on departure….
They managed to keep the parents away from the boat when the children filed on.
USA2010Holiday289.jpg

And judging from the happy faces of the kids, I would say that the CM did a great job with the kids as well.
USA2010Holiday296.jpg

The kids enjoyed the "loot" that they got ... and now have a secret handshake that they can share for the rest of their lives.

As for the adults, we had 2 hours to kill and ended up hitting the Orlando Premium Outlets. It’s amazing how much damage we Aussies can do in 90 minutes and I’d like to think that we helped out the Florida economy on this day.

When we picked up the kids, we got on a bus to Magic Kingdom. We only had to wait 10 minutes and watch 4 other buses go by.

Naturally, we showed off our house to the family. Those clouds look ominous.
USA2010Holiday302.jpg

And then took a tour of the neighbourhood. The kids found a cute playground called ToonTown and went on the rollercoater twice. The playgound was very popular as it was packed! They had to wait about 20 minutes for each ride.
We took the opportunity to cash in some snacks and ended up with a frozen lemonade and a pretzel.
And took time out for some pictures with other old friends.

I know my house has a laundry but I decided to check out the local wash and spin facilities – just in case. The other adults declined; so it was only me and the kids.
P5070113.jpg

I also went looking in the shops for an American Girl Doll…
P5070123.jpg

And kept going round looking for a doll of my own.
P5070126.jpg

Instead, I saw some dolls clowning around.
P5070124.jpg

I did see one that I wanted to get but couldn't find anyone to help me nor did I see a cash register.
009.jpg

Pity about the music system. It must have been stuck and kept playing the same song over and over and over again.
Great concept shop, though!

We had lunch at the Columbia Harbour House. I KNOW I took food porn but the camera must have chewed it up and spat it out somewhere. I have to admit that I was a little bit disappointed with the fare at CHH – it was too overly fried and dry for my liking. However, we LOVED the apple pie/cobbler that we had for dessert. It was great.

We found a great wilderness area the other side of the house and took the opportunity to see the waterfall up close. Fortunately, I had picked up fast passes earlier in the day so we didn't have to wait the 55 minutes stand-by.
P5070129.jpg

There was even a scenic railway going through the local mountain – but by this stage, the extended family were tired of the queues and those ominous clouds got even more threatening. A CM told me that they were expecting rain and that the rain would last a couple of hours.

With this news, we decided to head over to Epcot and spend some time in Future World.
Which turned out to be a great decision….it started to rain just as we got outside the gates of MK and we made a dash for the monorail.
Epcot was wet!
USA2010Holiday313.jpg

We headed for Innoventions where DS was keen to share a Sum of the Parts ride with his cousins.
We then headed for the Land but fastpasses were all gone for Soarin’ and with stand by time being 75 minutes; we went on Living with the Land.
I used to eat Jackfruit when I was a child in South East Asia. This one is a little bit outside my reach.
P5060087.jpg

And I learnt that you could grow chocolate in sandy soil. Something to consider for my garden.
P5060089.jpg

The Pomelo is another fruit from my childhood....so close but yet so far!
P5060091.jpg

DB suggested that we find somewhere to eat and wanted to know if there was a good restaurant in Epcot. He had heard that Le Cellier was worth going to. For you veteran planners, don’t bother trying not to laugh – I had the same reaction on the day.
DB had the notion that we were going to get into an Epcot restaurant at 6.30 pm as a group of 9 without any problems or ADRs!!

After a little delicate readjustment of expectations, we ended up eating here at 8.30 pm.
P5070133.jpg

This was the hamburger I had. I had ordered it medium rare and it was medium/well done.
P5070141.jpg

DH ordered a salad with feta cheese and pecans. It was yum!
P5070142.jpg

DS had the lasagna, the pick of the night.
P5070140.jpg

I'm not sure I would go back to T Rex in a hurry.

DS was happy as he scored big time!
USA2010Holiday318.jpg

And also got to visit his favourite store afterwards!
USA2010Holiday320.jpg

Day 3 with the family turned out okay. It was nice to see them and I had gone into this trip knowing that they traveled at a completely different speed to us and that planning was something that my DB just did not get.
I’m not sure I can take another 7 days at their pace!

[Up next – Day 4 @ World Showcase and the best of both worlds!]

I know my house has a laundry but I decided to check out the local wash and spin facilities – just in case. The other adults declined; so it was only me and the kids.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
sorry...that is so funny...
I have a family that is increasingly declining to partake in the spin cycle as I apparently tend to put the rpm a bit high :confused3

I also went looking in the shops for an American Girl Doll…

You know I have actually heard that song SOOOOOOO many times it doesn't get stuck in my head at all. It's just another song :yay:

Thanks so much for this.
Turned my frown from sitting doing tedious work seriously upsidedown....:upsidedow
In fact...I better stop laughing before I get any funny looks :rolleyes1

:thumbsup2 Jumping on the thread to say what a pleasure it was to meet you, your DH, and DS. Next time I'd like to be able to spend some more time with you I knew we had the same sense of humor & reading your TR its confirmed. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Having been to CA only once in my life I enjoyed seeing those pictures, and the areas of FL that are new to me was a treat too....keep that report coming!

Hey Ruthie! Thanks for posting :goodvibes.
If I'm ever in the area, I'm DEFINITELY going to make time to come and see you again.

How do you keep the magic alive at home?
Do you play Disney music?
Do you look at your trip pics?
Do you take your time to write your TR on the DisBoard?

Me...I found the Disney magic this morning in my kitchen.

I bought what has ended up being pixiedust: during my trip. I can't even remember exactly how much they cost and think that a pair were sub $10. It was money worth spending!

We decided to sprinkle the pixiedust: this morning and there is nothing like being directly in the frying pan (rather than the fire).

P5280001.jpg

We poured some magic into the mix....

P5280002.jpg

Made a wish and flipped it over for luck.

P5280003.jpg

And voila! :tink: A plateful of Disney magic at home.

P5280004.jpg

We've been like this :mickeyjum :mickeyjum :mickeyjum all morning.

I hope you used the potholders too ;) I do exactly this with the pancakes & the sunnyside up eggs, while whistling Zipadeedodah (if I'm awake enough to put in my partial plate/teeth in that is :rotfl:) otherwise I just hum it !
