Epcot ~ World Showcase

Feeling properly patriotic, we exited the coolness of the American Adventure Theater and stepped out into the warm evening air. Directly in front of us, the America Gardens Theater was filled with guests enjoying the instrumental rock music of The Ventures (Wipe Out, Theme From Hawaii Five-O) who were playing as part of the Flower Power Concert Series. :flower:

Suddenly, Ed announced that he wanted dessert and so we grooved our way over to the next pavilion... Italy!!

This time, he and Tricia went off to procure our treats and Billy and I searched out a table in the open-air piazza. Here’s where they were headed…

Mmmm...Gelato!

And here’s Billy, waiting for dessert.

Now, I must preface this next montage with a bit of background information. For many years we had Billy on what’s known as a Casien-Free Diet. When he was younger, we found that when he ate dairy products (which contain the protein, casien), his language skills were not as good. That changed as he got older, and he is no longer on the diet, but he is not in the habit of eating dairy products such as ice cream. For dessert, he usually prefers cookies!

This time, however, I didn’t have any cookies with me. So, when Ed and Tricia come back with gelato they brought Billy a small cup of vanilla, “just in case” he might want some. He seemed interested, so we gave him his little cup and his little spoon and let him try it.

At first, he just sniffed it (like he does with all new foods.) You may recall from past reports that, because of the autism, he has sensory issues. Smells and sniffing things are very important to him. You might also recall that he is orally “under-sensitized” (although this too is improving as he gets older.) This is why he likes to chew on things and tends to overstuff his mouth when eating... it seems he can’t fully “feel” the food that’s in his mouth unless it is stuffed.

Anyway, in order to avoid a “brain-freeze” situation, I scooped out a tiny spoonful of gelato and gave him the spoon. What followed was hilarious!

I swear this was just plain vanilla gelato!

And yet, he kept asking for MORE!!! :lmao:

He seemed to love the flavor, but the coldness of the gelato was a bit of a shock to his mouth. He didn't let that keep him from finishing it, though!! That is how he ate the entire thing: Spoonful... grimace... swallow. Spoonful... grimace... swallow. Oh, it was too funny! :rotfl2: Tricia almost fell off of her chair!

“Aunt Rae would love this,” Ed commented. So Tricia took out her cell phone and took a picture of Billy making the “gelato face” and sent it to Aunt Rae. After a bit, Ed called her to see how she liked it and we had a nice little chat. Being of Italian ancestry, she joked about how jealous she was that we were there in “Italy.”

While we were finishing up our dessert and phone call, the World Showcase Players came along to set up for a performance right next to where we were sitting!

Feeling lazy, Ed and I opted to stay seated at our table with Billy... I thought we could see and hear the show just fine. But Tricia wanted a better view, so she stood up to enjoy the comedic troupe performing a wacky version of Romeo and Juliet using audience members as guest performers. Very. Funny. Show.

Still chuckling from both the planned and unplanned comedy we had enjoyed, we continued on our World Showcase stroll and headed in the direction of the Rhineland.

I need the Disney landscapers to come do my house -- all those flowers in Italy are just breathtaking!

:lmao: about Billy and the gelato! That is a classic Beverly face -- not one you typically see while eating gelato! :lmao:

:lmao::lmao::lmao:
I'm impressed that AR does cellphone pictures.

LOVE the pics of Billy eating the gelato. Too funny! :rotfl:

That's the second picture I've seen on the DIS of that beautiful staircase in Italy with all the flower baskets....how did I miss that?? :confused3

We were able to catch more of the WS performances this trip, but didn't manage the one in Italy. It sounds cute and it looks like Tricia was really enjoying it. I love when you can capture a moment like that on camera. Nice!

Adorable pic of the brother-sister  !

Poor Billy! He clearly loved the taste of that Gelato but the temperature was almost too much to bear.

Ethan has a lot of the same issues with food. He will usually only eat about 3 bites of a scoop of ice cream. Then he just stirs it and stirs it.

He will eat popsicles though but he lets them get super drippy and he only eats the fruit juice ones.

Loved this chapter...

:lovestruc

Ahhhh, Autism and Food. It's always something. We decided to go with the dining plan for our October trip (and then I got a free dining pin! :thumbsup2 ), but I'll still have to pack lots of food for my son. He only eats a few things, and he even asked if we'd bring Bologna when we go to Disney World. Kids!

You got some really great pictures on this one, too. Love the picture of Trisha and Billy, and love the flowers in EPCOT, and love Trisha enjoying the entertainment!

:thumbsup2

Liam can be a food stuffer too. His speech therapist gave him a chewy tube in hopes that it would help "awaken" his mouth....yeah not so much. He thinks it's a toy hammer and goes around the house "hammering" things with it. :sad2: Boys.

Oh, that is precious! :rotfl:

You really should frame a picture of the "gelato face". Or perhaps the one of Billy sitting and waiting for Dad and Tricia--that one is SO cute. The smile on his face melts your heart! :lovestruc

I am laughing so hard right now, poor DF must think I'm nuts. That face of Billy's...reminds me of Matthew & onions. Bite, grimace, cough, swallow, more please!

I love the last picture as well....so nice to see Tricia hugging Billy as they explore the world together.

Trust me, I know what you're talking about!

I usually have something in my bag for Billy to eat... fortunately he has been making tremendous strides this year with accepting new foods!! :woohoo:

Some food he never ate before but will now eat: Hot Dog, Grilled Cheese Sandwich, PB&J Sandwich!!! Wow! Eating at WDW is going to be so much easier this year!!

Ah yes, Boys!!

Billy lost interest in chewy tubes as he got older, although they served their purpose for awhile. Now he is big enough to chew gum, which has been a lifesaver for me.

Just have to watch out that he doesn't take it out of his mouth and start twirling it around!! ;) Ugh... sticky hands!!

Heidi, there are lots of different oral stimulators available... for awhile, Billy liked the ones that gently vibrated his mouth. :thumbsup2

Here is the website for a company that sells lots of great special needs stuff, not only to therapists, but to the general public:

Thanks! They annoy each other (like all sibs) but they truly love each other, too! :lovestruc

Okay... ONIONS... was it the taste, I'm wondering, or the texture? Or perhaps the smell?? Funny how every kid is different!

:lmao:

I love those grimace pictures! And how fun to able to share the moment with Aunt Rae. Seinding a little pixie dust from far away!! Doug, my older son, had an experience like that with skittles a couple of years ago. After each one, he made a face like he was in pain -- hating it, but ate the whole bag. My brothers were crying, watching him eat.

When we were at Epcot last year, my dad got to be Romeo in the play. It was such a fun show!

What great pics! Love the grimmace ones. Daniel also has mouth issues, thank goodness for gum! He is more orally sensitive though and if food isn't "right" forget it. Thankfully he likes lots of different foods.

Simply love the photo of Tricia and Billy. DH got a shot of Daniel and I on the boat in Epcot with his arm around my shoulders, so precious.

Those pictures of Billy are priceless!! I'm so glad you decided to start posting face picture - I wouldn't have wanted to miss that! :thumbsup2

Alex was on a gluten & dairy free diet for a few years and he still has issues that carry over from it. It's a mixed blessing - the gfcf diets help so many kids, but restricting their diets for years doesn't do them any favors when it comes to variety!

The pictures remind me of Alex drinking soda. Every once in a while he decides to try some (or in one case he drank some punch that he didn't know was carbonated). It usually ends with him opening his mouth and the soda dripping all down the front of him. :headache:

The funniest part is that you think they're going to grimace and then push the food away... but they keep on making themselves gluttons for the punishment! :rotfl:

What fun your Dad got chosen!! Don't think that Tricia wasn't waving and shouting like crazy when the WS Players were looking for their Romeo... she would've loved it if Ed got chosen... but he was so relieved he wasn't!! :scared:
