An Anniversary, birthdays, and first timers...OH MY! Pre-Trip for Apr/May 2009

Remember how at the beginning I said I didn't have any pictures of Tink and Peter's friends that will be joining us?

Yeah...about that. I lied. Well ok not LIED. Here's the thing.

I didn't know that I had pics of them. While talking to Tink yesterday I was telling her I wasn't sure which of her friends were coming with us since I had only met them (and the group they hang out with) once.

She informed me that I had taken pictures of them when I went to their square dancing rehearsal one night when I was home for a visit.

And without further ado, here are "Mr. and Mrs. Friends". (I don't have Disney nicknames for them yet since I don't know them well enough to name them...)

Look at them laugh! This is gonna be one fun group...

Hopefully that will tide you over until I can get the ADR post ready. (likely tomorrow)

Food.

I love it. I love eating it, smelling it, seeing it...but mostly eating it. However, we had a couple challenges with deciding on what we are doing about food at WDW.

Challenge #1:

So my first thought after the initial "We're goin to Disney World!!" was "Oh how am I going to choose where to eat!?". Since it's Charming's first time there I was having a hard time deciding where I wanted to take him most.

The other thing I had to decide was whether or not I wanted to try a dining plan. We've never tried one and none of the family had any idea if it really was a "deal" or not. So I took it upon myself to do the research. As many already know...it is DEFINITELY a deal. Well, as long as you get a plan that suits you best. (I don't think I could get my money's worth out of the three meal a day one for instance) It also made sense to me since Charming stresses about money and I didn't want him to have to think about "how much we were spending".

I explained how the plans worked and Charming agreed that it really would be best for us. He liked the idea of taking a break to have a sit down meal once a day so we decided that the 1 CS meal and 1 TS meal a day plan would be awesome. So, after deciding that we wanted to do it, I called Disney to make the change for the two of us. I explained what I wanted after they found our reservation and was informed...that everyone on our reservation had to do it too. Doh! :headache:

Since Stich and his girlfriend are sharing a room with us, that meant they had to agree to do the DDP too. But when I called him up he told me that they were going to bring some peanut butter and jelly and make sandwiches and only do a couple of the TS meals. So they didn't WANT to spend the $$ on a DDP.

I told Charming about this and he was ticked! I think his words were "I am NOT going to WDW for the first time in my life to eat PB&J!". I was glad that we were on the same page. But now I was distressed. I really didn't want to pay OOP for all those meals! I knew that it would stress out Charming to be paying a bill every time we sat down to eat. I could see the fights coming. So I called Tink.

Mom and I talked about it and I was telling her how distressed I was and how upset I was that Stitch was going to cheap out on this part. Peter was in the background and I could hear him saying "it wouldn't save you any money anyway!". Well, I got Peter on the phone and told him all about my research and how I had looked at menus and added stuff up and by MY calculations it WOULD save me money thankyouverymuch!

Now this is where it gets good. Peter is a bit of a gambler. I'm not talking casinos or vegas or anything...but he'll make you a bet when he gets the chance. So he says to me, "How about this. You guys put the money that you would have spent on a dining plan on a visa gift card. Then, eat like you would be eating on the dining plan and keep track of EVERYTHING. If you run out of money, I'll pay for the rest of your meals.". :faint:

I, of course, immediately accepted. I mean come on! What a win win situation here. If we DON'T spend it all we'll have money to come home with (or more likely spend on souvies) and if we DO spend it all I get to say "I told you so!" and get a few free meals. :woohoo:

So. I'm calling it our "Pseudo Disney Dining Plan".

Challenge #2:

Now that we had decided on HOW, we needed to decide WHERE.

There were a few places that I knew I wanted to go. The Brown Derby has always been a favorite. I've also loved (most of the time) Chefs de France. I also knew I had to take Charming to Sci-Fi. There were some places I had never been that I wanted to try too. Like Raglan Road. We both LOVE Irish music. And I really wanted to try Le Cellier.

In my research on the DDPs I happened across a little website called...DIS. And in browsing the forums, I found out that I needed to make my reservations at 90 days.

Not could...NEEDED.

Since we are going to be celebrating the anniversary and birthdays, Tink already had ideas of where we should eat on a few of the days. But she didn't understand my urgency when 90 days came along and I started asking her if she had called to make reservations for the meals that we would all be eating together. I explained (several times) WHY we needed to call but she just didn't get my sense of urgency!

FINALLY she called and low and behold, we couldn't get the days she wanted for a couple of the places. So we had to do some shifting. In the end, we got it all worked out but boy was I concerned there for a minute!

Now I KNOW I promised ADRs in this post...but it's getting pretty wordy. I figured I needed to get the explanation out of the way first.

So. Next post..I PROMISE it will have the ADRs. Scouts honor. :)

Stay tuned...

And I thought ours was complicated trying to get kosher food!

I am glad that you guys got it sorted out though! Can't wait to see where you got!

Oh the psudeo disney dining plan sounds great! I think you will end up with a few free meals for sure! Don't forget about your snacks too, you have $4 each per day for a snakc with that plan :)

Good thing you decided to do dining, PB&J is great once in a while, but it can get real old when you see people eating all kinds of yummy snacks around you! I learned that one last trip lol!

It's coming up soon! I've had a few crazy days and didn't have time to write it up.

I hope Stitch brings his wallet. I'm on the Deluxe Dining Plan, and at that with only 2 meals a day (lots of 2 credit signature dining)-my research looks like about $170 as a party of one. Remember to get expensive non-alcoholic drinks like milkshakes and smoothies to really rack on the $$$.

PB & J at WDW? I am sorry. ChefMickey123 finds that unacceptable.:lmao:

I have to second ChefMickey's sentiment on the PB&J! Not at WDW you don't!

We did the regular dining plan on our 2007 trip and it is DEFINITELY a good deal. They have since removed appetizers and gratuity, but I still think you will come out on top. Just remember to get a drink, entree, and dessert at each meal, go big on CS, and don't forget your snacks. Peter will be eating his words! :lmao:

I totally agree with you on the "stress-relief" factor of using the DDP. Watching every penny at a restaurant is no fun and it was so nice to know that all our food was paid for in advance. It was really a load off. And we didn't have to restrict our boys to certain menu items...they could have what they wanted.....such a treat! :yay:

I'll be interested to see how things come out money-wise. I suspect you have some free meals in your future!

Can't wait to hear where you decide to eat! :surfweb:

When I last left off, we had just discovered that Tink suddenly realized why it was important to make your ADRs 90 days in advance. She was pretty frustrated because we have a large group for several of our meals. (the whole celebrating of the anniversary and birthdays and such)

Our first meal together was going to be the 50's Cafe for Grandma's birthday on Monday evening. But...no seating for a party of 9. Next up was Peter's birthday dinner on Tuesday evening at Garden Grill. Whew! No problems there. Finally, Saturday evening was the anniversary celebration and Tink wanted the Brown Derby. Guess what...no seating that evening for a party of 9.

Ack! What are we going to do!? After quite a bit of deliberation and several calls to Disney Dining...we ended up switching the days we would be going to 50's and the Derby. So now Grandma's birthday is at the Derby and the Anniversary dinner is at 50's. Somehow...it seems even more appropriate.

Since Charming and I will be doing a "Pseudo Disney Dining Plan" (or PDDP), I needed to get the other table service meals figured out. Charming was no help. "I've never been there!" and "I don't care!" were the things I heard the most. Oh, and "Why do we have to do this NOW?". Sigh. So, here are the ones I decided on.

Day 1: We'll be arriving around lunch time so we'll likely just pick up something quick from the resort cafeteria.

Dinner - since we'll be at MK (and there aren't really any TS places I want to eat at) we'll also just pick up something quick when we get hungry again. Probably either Cosmic Ray's (because of the variety) or Casey's Corner (if he's feeling the need for his corn dog nuggets already)

Day 2: We'll be headed to AK for the morning EMH. So I'll probably drag him to Flame Tree. He loves BBQ and it makes me laugh that they have "St. Louis Ribs" on the menu.
*it's possible that we'll skip the EMHs for this day and just go to HS...but we probably won't decide that till we're there.

Dinner - HS has evening EMH and we'll be meeting up with everyone else when they get in and settled. Our Brown Derby reservations are at 6:15 p.m. and I'm REALLY looking forward to this one. It's always been one of my favorites. I just hope they're not out of the Tuna like they were last time.
*side note - this meal doesn't count against our PDDP because Tink and Peter told us they were buying dinner for the anniversary celebration which was supposed to be at the Derby. Confused yet? :confused3

Day 3: This will be a full day of Epcot. :woohoo: Lunch will be a counter service meal whenever we get hungry. Probably Sunshine Seasons (again for the variety). Also, since we get desserts with each meal, I fully intend to pick deserts that can be stuffed in my bag for later enjoyment. Don't get me wrong...I  dessert. ANY time. But I also get full pretty quickly...so I'll be saving them.

Dinner - Garden Grill at 7:30 p.m. This is Peter's birthday dinner. It's also the only character meal we'll be doing. I'm nervous/excited to see what Charming's reaction to the characters is going to be. I have some fond memories of a flirtatious chipmunk...but I'm not sure what he's going to think. Normally I wouldn't go for a buffet, but we've got several growing boys that will make up for us girls not eating as much.

Day 4: It's back to AK for day 4. A FULL day at AK and I'm excited! Lunch will be counter service at Yak and Yeti. It's the only counter service place I MUST try. I wanted to do TS here but it didn't make the cut when the dust settled. So I'll content myself with the honey chicken at the counter.

Dinner - somewhere in there we'll have to find a good snack or eat a late lunch because our dinner reservations aren't until 9 p.m. We'll be headed to Raglan Road and I wanted to be there for the music.

Day 5: We'll be heading back to MK for morning EMH. Again, we'll just find a counter service when we get hungry. Though I DO want to try Tomorrowland Noodles one of these days...we'll see.

Dinner - this is the one I've been waiting for for a long time. Peter and Tink haven't ever taken us to this place over the years cause "they're just not into steak that much". But now that I'm paying, we're going to Le Cellier. We got a table for four and at this point I'm not sure who is joining Charming and I. Our reservation is for 8:25 p.m. and I'll be stretching that meal out as long as possible. I love to walk Epcot at night when everyone else has left. There's only one thing that will ruin this for me...if they don't have the maple creme brulee...

Day 6: Today is another full day of Epcot. Since we're doing the 7 day PDDP and we didn't use a TS meal on day one and Peter and Tink are picking up another TS meal...we have a couple that can be used for lunches. Coral Reef almost didn't make the cut but I'm glad I decided to do lunch here. We'll be doing an early one at 11:30 a.m.

Dinner - another of my favorites. We'll be dining at Chefs de France at 7:30 p.m. I wasn't as pleased with my meal here last April as I had been in the past but I'm hoping they're back to their usual yummy food this year.

Day 7: This is our only full day at HS. Lunch will be at 11:30 a.m. since dinner is a little early tonight. We'll be hitting Sci-Fi Dine In. I love this place! And it works better for lunch since I'm not thrilled about the dinner choices.

Dinner - technically this will be the anniversary celebration at the 50's cafe. Reservations are for 6:50 p.m. We've got a full day of fun and wacky dining! Perfect for a day at HS. :)

Day 8: Sadly, this is our return day. We've got until 3:30 p.m. so we'll try to hit a park (we did add on park tickets for this day) and I'll probably leave the decision of which one up to Charming since there are no morning EMHs to make that determination for us. I think we'll try to hit Big River Grill and Brewing because we're big microbrew fans. We should have plenty of time to grab lunch there and get back to our resort for departure. (we'll be paying OOP for any meals this day)

Whew! Are you still with me? Ok. Let's recap.

The totals come to: CS meals - 6 and TS meals - 8

What's that you say? It isn't adding up if we're doing the 7 day PDDP? Well, let's look at the TS meals again. We get 7 on the plan. We'll be eating at:
- The Brown Derby
- Garden Grill
- Raglan Road
- Le Cellier
- Coral Reef
- Chefs de France
- Sci-Fi
- 50's Prime Time Cafe

Yep, it's 8 but remember, we're not paying for the Brown Derby. So that brings us to 7.

And I've only got 6 CS meals planned...so what does that mean? That's right! It means one of those days I'll be eating more than a croissant for breakfast! :woohoo: Here I come Mickey waffles!

As you can see, we tend to plan our meals around what parks we'll be in on what days. Tink and Peter have always planned this way so by default I tend towards it as well. Especially since this will be Charming's first trip and we'll WANT to be spending as much time in the parks as possible. There will be another time to try all the resort restaurants...hopefully. :)

So, there you go. Those are our plans. I doubt we'll change them much but I'll update if there are any changes.

Up Next!...Finally another photo post! I'll take a break from the planning and tell you a little about my last trip.

:rotfl2: Oh I SO agree with you. Shoot, even Charming agreed and he's never even been there! (course...we DO like to eat so I wasn't that surprised)

Are there a lot of places that allow you to get a milkshake or smoothie instead of a soda as your beverage? Cause if so I'm going to be in HEAVEN! That's like two desserts in one meal!!

I have to second ChefMickey's sentiment on the PB&J! Not at WDW you don't!

Hee hee, Peter made me promise that we would "only eat when and what we REALLY wanted" instead of making choices based on menu price and eating because we "had" to. But dining with no limits?? You better bet your bottom dollar that I'm gonna be eating big!

And the stress relief of not having to worry about what I'm ordering was probably the biggest draw for me. Even if I break even I'm going to be happy.

As for keeping track...I'm thinking I might design some "punch cards" for each day to remind us what we get. Wouldn't want to lose track! ;)

Those ADRs look great! I have eaten at Coral Reef for lunch and it was great! Good choice! We also enjoy Sci Fi...so much fun!

As far as only eating what and when you really want...it's a good plan, but when you are on the DDP you may find yourself eating more, just because you CAN! Ok...not a great way to eat on a regular basis, but you're on VACATION....live a little!! :woohoo:

Oh definitely! I'll be livin it up! :cool1:

And actually...speaking of...I just discovered something. Back when I had been looking up info on the Dining Plan, I thought I looked at the Brown Derby in reference to whether or not it was Signature Dining. I THOUGHT I remember it not being SD...but it is now! If it wasn't then too...I could have just missed it. Anway, that being said...it's a double bonus that I'm not having to pay for that one! :cloud9:

I did kind of scare myself though. I happened across an old PDF that said that the Coral Reef was Signature Dining. YIKES! But before I panicked I found a thread here that talks about the fact that it's an old PDF. WHEW! Crisis averted...good ol' DIS!

whew! That sounds like a lot of work with getting your meals planned! my DH's family thought i was crazy for trying to get places booked far ahead. They always just book some where they are there, can you believe it?!?!
We are also going to le cellier, and coral reef! Epcot seems like a really neat place to eat!
(and I also am a BIG fan of eating! lol popcorn:: popcorn:: pretty much one of the best parts of vacations!)
I am so glad you don't have to worry about the food bill! I'm sure you will have a great time racking up that bill!

I might be a little bored with these "no picture" posts. :)

So...now for something entirely different!

Last May was my 30th birthday. Earlier in the year Tink and I were talking about how I should celebrate. Somehow we got onto the subject of a Mother/Daughter trip someplace. It wasn't long before we had decided to go to Disney World.

Tink came out a few days before we were going to leave. My friends all love her and she still has friends out here that she likes to visit when she's in town. But before we knew it, it was the night before our trip. The packing was done and we headed to bed.

About 4 a.m. I felt my bed shake. "Whoa," I thought, "those are some high winds!". About that time my bed started shaking pretty violently. Since I grew up on the west coast I was up and in my doorway before I was fully awake. "This is an earthquake!" was my next thought. The shaking soon subsided. It was never really hard enough for me to worry that the building was coming down, but I was pretty surprised to feel an earthquake in Missouri.

I poked my head in Tink's room and she was still asleep. About that time my phone rang. Over the next hour or so I responded to phone calls and text messages from friends that knew I had experienced earthquakes before. I got "Was that an earthquake?" and "Will there be more?" and "What do I do?". By this point Tink had woken up and we discussed the fact that she had slept through the quake. I mean, it wasn't a huge one but it was no wimpy little tremor either!

So neither one of us slept much more. I dozed for a couple more hours and then it was time to get up and get moving! We headed to the airport and grabbed some coffee and breakfast after checking in. We got loaded onto the plane, took our seats...and sat there. I felt the plane move at one point and turned to Tink.

"I think that was an aftershock!"
"Really? I didn't feel anything..."
"Yeah, but you SLEPT through the last one!"

After sitting there for a while an announcement came over the PA.

"We're sorry for the delay folks, but we've had an aftershock from the earthquake last night. They had to check the plane out but we should be in the air any minute now!"

I turned back to Tink,

"See!? I TOLD you it was an aftershock!"

She didn't respond with anything more than that "look". :rotfl:

After a short flight we were in Orlando. I had been a little congested the last couple of days but that sun...oh that SUN! I felt better already! We were taking ME but due to a little mix up we didn't have the tags for the luggage. So we had to pick up our luggage and then we made our way to ME. I had never done this before and I loved the little video. Granted...I was pretty excited.

We got settled at the Coronado Springs resort and headed to Epcot. We had dinner reservations at Chefs de France.

*You might notice a lack of pictures in this "picture" post at this point. Let me just say that at this point I wasn't worried about taking pictures since I had "the whole trip" to take them.

By the time we sat down for dinner my congestion had gotten worse. By the end of dinner I had chills. I thought it could just be the chilly night, but I was a little concerned. After IllumiNations we headed home. Very tired, I got ready and climbed in bed.

The next morning I woke up and immediately knew something was wrong. I felt like death warmed over. The congestion was horrible and it had settled in my chest overnight. So when I coughed it sounded like I had the plague. In addition to that I was running a low grade fever. Tink suggested I stay in bed.

"What?! Stay in bed at Disney?! Are you crazy!?"
"Well, you don't sound good. Maybe we should take it easy."
"I did NOT come to Disney to lay in the hotel room all day!"

And that was the end of that. I sent Tink to get me some cold medicine from the gift shop and crawled to the shower. She was only able to get NyQuil as she said it was the only thing she could find. I don't react well to cold medicine anyway and I KNEW the NyQuil was going to put me out. But I was desperate. So I took half a dose and off we went.

I did not take any pictures that day. I was SO sick and walked around like a zombie for half the day. I ended up visiting first aid at HS that morning where I received some Sudafed and Tylenol and they told me where I could find some cough syrup. Thus began my several times a day dosing for the rest of the trip.

I ended up feeling a little better but the trip is still a bit fuzzy. I don't remember what parks we went to on what days. I DO remember waiting in an hour and a half line for Soarin'.

So, without further ado, here are some of the photos I took around the world last April.

I'm pretty sure we went to Animal Kingdom on the third day.

At some point we went back to Epcot. I tell you what, I sure wish I had had a compact camera with me this trip. It was such a chore to drag out the SLR every time I wanted a picture. So I didn't.

I got this one though.

And this one.

The last photos I have are from a day we returned to HS. I had never seen the Lights, Motors, Action! show and Tink knew I would love it. (I secretly want to be a stunt driver)

Seriously! Sign me up! :)

So, despite being sick, I still had a great time. But I sure hope I can stay bug free this time around!

Epcot is our favorite place to eat! With HS coming in as a close second.

My parents used to just book places to eat when we got there too. But since Disney implemented the Dining Plan, they've not really been able to do that.

I'll have to do a trip report when we get back and let everyone know how the PDDP went! :lmao:

That really stinks to be sick on vacation...sorry that happened. Here's hoping you stay healthy this trip! :wizard:

We love the LMA Stunt show too...so looking forward to seeing it again this trip! ;)
