Amy's "BUT I'M NOT A RUNNER" Journal

Welcome Back Amy! :Pinkbounc

I hope you had a wonderful vacation! You did a great job exercising while you were away! :goodvibes I'm glad you're back! We missed ya! :grouphug:

Amy -- It is so great to see you back. I love reading your journal and really missed the inspiration! I hope you had a fabulous vacation. I am so impressed that you worked so hard to get those great 3 mile times!

Looking forward to seeing you back a lot more now. :grouphug:

I got some good runs in and actually rocked out some 3 mile times...26:20 and 26:16. Now if I can do that in my upcoming races I will be a very happy girl!

HOLY COW!!! I guess by the time I cross the finish line on the 12th, you'll be showered, fed and have had a nap!! :rotfl:

I'm so glad you're back! I hope you had a GREAT time at the beach!

:woohoo: Welcome Back!!! :woohoo:

Soo glad to have you back!! We missed your enthusiasm, words of wisdom and overall journaling expertise ( :confused3 ) :thumbsup2 .

Also glad to see you were at the beach! Hope you had a wonderful time...gotta say I'm a little jealous :) Oh, and what characters were at the bar? I didn't know Mickey & crew liked to indulge in a few cocktails? :rotfl2:

As far as the running...just over 26 minutes?!?! Are you crazy?!?! You are so super speedy fast it's not funny! But really...awesome, awesome job...I'm very proud of you! Look how fast you've gotten in such a short amount of time. You're gonna make that marathon seem quick and easy ;)

Hope all goes well this week with you...I know it could be hard to get back on track with the regular routine, but if anyone can do it....you can!

Have a great day!!

Hi Amy,

Hope you had a great time at the beach....I must say, I have NEVER been to a beach. No kidding. I have never seen the ocean either. Unless you count flying in an airplane over the ocean. So I have no idea what it would be like to go to a beach! I am sure that it is beautiful!!!

Congrats on getting some running in while on vacation...that is great!!

Keep up the good work!

Have a great night :)

Hi Guys :)

Thanks for stopping by! Things are going along...I have a race this week so I'm trying to get prepared for that. Would love to post a personal best on Thursday morning after the 5K! I can't keep up with some people around here (ahem...Scott!). But my 3 mile times have been pretty decent so I'm hoping I have a good night on Wednesday!

Last week wasn't my best week of training....trying to get back into a routine after being away is a little hard! But I did manage to do ok despite some setbacks lol:

Tues: 3 mile run
Wed: KBX
Thurs: 2.5 mile run
Fri: rest
Sat: 30 minutes Elliptical (plus abs and pushups)
Sun: 5 mile run (approx. 53 minutes)

My times on all of the above runs were not good. I've definitely lost both speed and endurance over the past few weeks. I had to take a rest day on Friday because I was SO SORE from KBX. Being away from KBX for more than 2 weeks just killed me.....all those muscles are being reworked so I'll be sore now off and on for a few weeks.

Yesterday I went to KBX and now I'm SOOO sore again LOL! :confused3 Oh well...i know it's good for me! I have to get myself ready for full marathon training which begins in less than a month now! I need to focus on building my endurance up to the 7 mile run.....need to get all the KBX soreness worked out....need to figure out my nutrition stuff. And with all that said I'll be away for another 2 weeks in August. Hopefully I can keep up the training routine while I'm away! That's the goal this time!!!

So that's it....nothing much to report...just putting the steps in and hoping for a great race tomorrow night! :goodvibes

Amy - you're doing fantastic! Don't let a little soreness get you down. And after vacation, everyone would be a little slower. In no time you'll be blowing us all away again! :thumbsup2 There's no doubt in my mind!

I can't believe your marathon training is right around the corner! How exciting! I can't wait to hear all about it.

Less than 3 weeks until our 5K! I finally get to meet you in person!

Hello Amy

Was thinking about you last night during your race and flew here this morning to see if you did a personal best (have a feeling that you did ;) ).....so where's the update, girl? :confused3 :rotfl:

Good luck with the KBX sorness...I'm sure it can be frustrating. Don't you do yoga as part of your normal routine? I'd think that would help a little...stretching out those sore muscles....

And yeah..let me know about the nutrition stuff. I'm trying to figure all of that out myself (I'm getting tired after long runs and workouts) and could use any info or advice....I'll share the same with you as I research it :)

Great job with getting back into it...and it's nice to have you back on the boards!!

Have a great day!

:goodvibes Thanks Scott, Kim, Tracy and Jamie! I appreciate that you guys continue to post in my journal and keep it from slipping into oblivion. I know I've been a bit of a journal slacker this past month; but I truly love that you all take the time to post and check on me! I promise I'll try to get to all your journals soon! Thanks again guys! It means so much to me!

And I know you have all been missing this :teeth: . SOOOO I'm going back to the quotes. This one is from a short story and it reminded me of the race last night. The temperatures were still in the 90's yestereday evening when the race began. It was painful for me in many ways...probably the toughest run I've ever had...including the Trail Run. But this is what it's all about...

"Out of the silver heat mirage he ran. The sky burned, and under him the paving was a black mirror reflecting sun-fire. Sweat sprayed his skin with each foot strike so that he ran in a hot mist of his own creation. With each slap on the softened asphalt, his soles absorbed heat that rose through his arches and ankles and the stems of his shins. It was a
carnival of pain, but he loved each stride because running distilled him to his essence and the heat hastened this distillation."

- James Tabor, from "The Runner," a short story

--------------------------------------------------------------

Downtown Westfield 5K

I drove 1.5 hours to get to the race, sat through traffic and was doing this one on my own! Well, I can't really say that I was doing it on my own since I spent most of the time on the way to the race talking to my best friend...who was truly the only reason I went through with this yesterday! I was initially going to run this race with a bunch of people...but they all dropped out and I could have easily as well. But it was important to me to get out there and run..compete...race again. It kind of centers you and reminds you why you put the steps in week after week...racing is an important part of my journey and having somebody support you whole-heartedly in that endeavor is a huge gift :). I really needed the motivation and confidence to get out there...thankfully I had somebody who was willing to do that!!! So my nerves were calmed and even though we couldn't race together...we were in this one together in spirit and that got me through the entire thing...from long painful drive to short painful race lol!

Speaking of which, I love the line in the above quote "It was a carnival of pain....". I can relate to that! The race started out well, I situated myself in a decent location closer to the front of the pack than I normally line up. I wanted a quick start, the past few races have had me starting in the back and I know I lose time getting myself through the crowds. So I started quick and finished the first mile in around 8 minutes. WAY too fast for me as I headed into mile 2 which brought the hill. At that point...between the heat...my aching sore legs (still killing me from KBX) and the fact that I paced myself way to fast....I started to lose speed. That's when I began to get passed up pretty quickly and I really started to doubt myself and question what in the world I was doing out there running in this god-forsaken heat lol. Fortunately this race was well attended and the wonderful residents of Westfield were out in full force with water....and more importantly....garden hoses, spraying us down as we ran by! They were very supportive and that helped immensely! As Mile 2 finished I clocked in around 18 minutes...but I started to get awful side stitches and my breathing was completely messed up and out of sync. I literally felt like I was gasping for air and really had to take multiple walk breaks during Mile 3 as we headed to the finish line. My legs were heavy and sore and I really didn't have a lot left in the tank....I did manage to kick it out for the finish and came in at 28:46. Overall that is not a bad showing. But I had set myself up for disappointment...I was really hoping to hit the 27's in this race. With that said...this is a personal best for me in a race...I just know that I'm capable of quicker times :). But I'm beginning to realize that this race was a victory regardless of my time!

There were so many highlights though to this race. The pain of it aside...I enjoyed the festivities and atmosphere of downtown Westfield, the thrill of running with 1800 people, the excitement of the bands and expo tents, the comaraderie of the runners. During the race...at times when I really needed a boost...someone would come along and motivate me. Once it was a woman who just said "hey...we're almost there"...and ran with me for about .25 miles just to keep me going. Another was a guy who literally grabbed my arm at one point when I was starting to falter and said "Less than half a mile...we can do this"...he also stayed and ran with me and I finished just behind him. And of course having an incredibly supportive friend who helped me find the courage to get to the start is a blessing. It's also great to go home to the family and have the kids ask how the race went....and want to see the T-Shirt.... and inevitably ask the same question they always ask "Did you win, Mommy?". :rotfl: I guess...if you really think about it...I did win. I won because I was out there racing...how many people can say that? I won because I have the capacity and the blessing of good health that allows me to run. I won because I have wonderful and amazing people in my life who support me, encourage me and love me no matter how I finish each race. So yes...I guess next time when they ask me if I won...I can honestly say "Yes". :goodvibes

Hello fellow Journal Slacker! (I can say that because I've been slacking myself)

Listen, serious stuff first....that last paragraph you wrote really hits home. I get that from my daughter all the time (Did you win? or Hope you win!) and what you said was spot on. We are all winning our own personal victories...every day on this journey towards the marathon is a success. Thanks to you, next time I get asked that question I will say yes and thank her for just being there to support me. :) (see I CAN be serious every once in a while!)

Anyway...way to go on the race!!! 28:46 is a speedy time!! Especially in that heat, plus having soreness/pain on top of that....seems like just crossing the finish line was a huge milestone! I'm very proud of you!!!

And thanks for the awesome quote!! Love to see those on your posts!

All in all...great job Amy!!!

Gotta run....a friend is calling... ;)

Have a GREAT day!!

WOW AMY!!! :cheer2: I am so proud of you for driving so far and completing that race by yourself. Even though you had your friend to talk to...I know that had to be hard! And then, you weren't even feeling great on top of it...you truly are my hero! :worship:

I loved the quote from the story. You are so right on so many levels!! :thumbsup2

Keep up the great work, girl!

So today is a tough day mentally for me. I'm beginning to feel like that "non-runner" again for some reason. Truthfully I haven't had a good run now in so long I forget what they feel like. Every run seems hard....my breathing seems messed up...my legs feel stiff and heavy. I know that there are things that are within my control...nutrition being the main factor for me. And there are things that are not within my control....the heat and humidity (which factors heavily for me). But with that said, I'm definitely in a running funk. I've lost so much endurance this past month or so that a 6 mile run feels out of reach. I don't think I could finish a 10K if my life depended on it. Ok..maybe that's not true lol...but it sure would be tough!

There are days when the marathon feels so impossible...and today is one of those days :(. So I did my "Long Run" today....granted it was during the afternoon and 90 degrees is nothing to take lightly....BUT I was running slowly...GOD was I running slowly...and still it hurt and STILL I could only finish 5 miles. I was off road a lot...I know the trails impact my running a great deal and they do add a level of difficulty to the run. BUT STILL I should have been able to finish 6 miles.

Ugh! Sorry to vent :). Venting is over. Nothing to see here. Move along ;).

So...tomorrow is another day. I'll head to KBX and work on that core fitness. Tuesday I plan to run 4 miles (in the am when it's cool!). Wednesday I may hit KBX again...that is up in the air right now. Thursday I think I'm running another 5K race in the evening. Friday will possibly be KBX (depends on what I do Wednesday). Saturday we are driving 7 hours to Williamsburg! Sunday I will attempt another long run....here's hoping I can finally do those 6 miles!!!!

Thanks for listening guys. It's really appreciated.

Hey now, Amy....you're allowed to have bad days....but NEVER EVER question if you're a runner. You are absolutely, positively a runner....and a GREAT runner at that! I really think the humidity and heat are killing all of us. It has definitely slowed us down.

Please don't run in the afternoon. That scares me. Temps in the 90's is nothing to mess with!! Please either go in the am or at night.

Don't be so hard on yourself either. I know it's hard...but you DID do very well on your vacation to keep up with your running. There's no other reason for your harder runs besides the heat...and I truly believe that.

Please take care, Amy. We all love ya, and we're here for you!

 Amy,

I think we all have bad days where we start thinking negatively about this journey we are on. Amy, sweetie, please don't question yourself. You are a runner! I know that your times haven't been where you would like them to be, but I think the heat and humidity is playing into that. I think you are doing a wonderful job! You are such an inspiration to me Amy.... I am so proud of you for all that you have accomplished.

Keep on keeping on, Amy! :cheer2: You CAN do this!

Hi Amy!!

Listen, every day is not gonna be a good day....every run is not gonna be a good run....we are all gonna go through many ups and downs. What builds our character though is how we handle the tough times. Think of this as hitting a wall in the marathon..what are you gonna do, quit or become a better person...more confident and sure of your self than ever before? Running is not all physical, it's mental too. It's easy to get discouraged but just hang in there and push through. I guarantee that a week or two from now, you'll be really glad you stuck with it. :)

With that said...

Please don't run in the extreme heat! I know that our daily schedules are tough sometimes, but don't play around with the humidity and the sun. There are so many risks associated with it, that it's just not worth what you get out of it.

Amy, you are gonna finish that marathon and it's gonna be one of the biggest accomplishments of your entire life. I believe that and would venture to say that the rest of us on these boards would also agree. You ARE a runner. Keep your chin up and remember that we're here to support you. :thumbsup2

Have a great day!!

Scott

Hi Amy!!

Just checking in on you, kiddo....we last saw you kind of bummed out....how are you doing??

:)

Amy – I am so sorry I haven’t been here, but I have thought of you often and am now catching up. I loved the excerpt of the runner’s story and how the race distills us. When it comes right down to it, there is nothing out there but who we are and what we have in us that brings us to the start line and gets us to the Finish. Your account of the Westfield race brought me to tears. You know I walk these races, rather than run them, and yet I know exactly what a runner goes through, even if it is on a much different level. I truly, truly admire what you are doing and how determined you are to do it. You are one amazing lady and I am so happy to come here and be inspired by you, all over again.

BTW, I really think you need to go post on the “why we run” thread on the events/competition part of the WISH boards. You have so much to say that will inspire other people and your quotes are always edifying.

Congratulations on an awesome finishing time on that race! I hope the pride and satisfaction have not worn off with the passage of days and the tedium of real life and the impossibility of running in this heat. Bask in the glory, kiddo! I know you have had some tough running days recently, but go back and read your journal and find the inspiration that we do there. Helen on the weekly training thread has named the kinds of run you had recently a “stonker”. Well, you know what? We all have them and we all survive them and then we put them behind us and head out again.

Please come and tell us you are there. That you have found the desire to keep going and do everything you have to do so that we can be at the start line “together” come January 7 and know that we can both make it to the finish. Even if you are there 2.5 hours ahead of me! :teeth:

:goodvibes :grouphug:

Wow....I honestly don't know what to say to you guys. I read all the posts since my really depressing one on Sunday....and it honestly brought tears to my eyes. I can't tell you guys how much it means to me to have this kind of support.

With that said...I have to admit I feel a bit embarassed to be such a complainer. I guess the toll of the past few weeks of poor runs..."stonkers"...and the heat....and probably feeling a bit beat up from KBX....must have put me in quite a mood. I hate to be so negative and I can promise you guys that I do have my chin up :teeth: AND I'm back in fighting form! This week I did a day of yoga, 2 days of KBX and 2 decent 4 mile runs (hit the road early...didn't get out there in the heat of the day)!!! We are going to be away in Williamsburg, VA this coming week but I plan to utilize the fitness center and possibly hit some outdoor runs with the aid of my handy Garmin!

But again.... THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!! :grouphug: I would not have come this far without you. And the journey is really just beginning! So I want to let you know how much I appreciate your support and encouragement. ((HUGS)) to you....Kim, Tracy, Cam and Scott!!!!! You guys all totally rock!!!!! :goodvibes

Amy, just wanted you to know I just found your journal and read the first few entries when you began running. I saw me in you, and when I skipped ahead and read the last couple of pages, I saw inspiration! Look what you've accomplished in a few short months! That's awesome. I too am reasonably fit, but have never ran. I have three kids and turn 40 at the end of the year, so I signed up for the 1/2 Marathon in January. I will definitely be keeping up with your journal to inspire me on my quest! Thanks for putting in all those steps before me and showing me it can be done.

Tracey

Amy -- So glad you are feeling better!

cross-post from my journal:

I thought of you this morning when I was do my training session for the DL 1/2. Reminding myself we all have stonkers and we just have to get out there.

Hey, we just got season tickets for UD home games this fall -- PM me if you'd like to coordinate to meet there sometime!

Keep on keepin' on, Amy! Enjoy Williamsburg. We had such a great time there last weekend, but be careful of the sun -- I ended up with sun poisoning, I am pretty sure. Wear lots of sunscreen! Oh, and if you go to the stables at Busch Gardens, please say hi to Zipper for us -- he is a very sweet miniature sicilian donkey with the saddest eyes. :grouphug:
