The auto train can be great.. as long as you dont hit any major delays.

I had no luck with it my trip in August.. we never got to FL till almost 6pm due to a storm and hitting a tree in the middle of the night...not good with 2 in diapers and I was just about out. I am so glad we brought a gallon of milk and tons of snacks for the kids. than on our return trip right before we were going to the station we found out the train was canceled due to a freight train derailment I believe..It was labor day and we had no choice but to drive back to NJ with 4 kdis nad very little notice. We were not prepared for the drive... than the joy of waiting weeks for a refund adn having to pay $10 to return the tickets for the refund.

I remember reading your post about your AutoTrain experience, and all I could think was !!! My family took the AutoTrain south on the Saturday before Labor Day south, arriving the Sunday before Labor Day in Florida, right on time. I can't believe I missed that freight train derailment by one day!! Our train ride back (a week later) was perfect too. Timing is everything - just horrible that you had such bad luck on both ends of the trip!

I have friends that have taken the autotrain for years..Now, tho, their son drives their car down and they fly down and he flies back..but when they were going every winter, they never gave it a second thought..go and enjoy

We too missed the derailment by one day, we left Sanford on Saturday before Labor Day and arrived in Lorton ½ hour early.
