amtrak roomlette question

We are a family of 3 and thinking about taking the train down but I dont really want to get 2 roomlettes for our small family as we really wouldnt need two rooms because my 3 year old would want to squish into the small bed with me to sleep so could i book my DD and I with a roomlette and book DH with just a coach seat and then the 3 of us just share the roomlette or does someone on the train check tickets going into the sleeper cars?

Yes they do check who's in the sleeper as you have to pass through the diner to get into the sleeper section.

If you phone Amtrak, you may get an agent who will book the three of you into a roomette since your child is so small, but some agents wont do it.

According to someone here recently with roomette experience, three people will NOT fit in a roomette. Period. In fact, the coach passenger likely will not even be allowed daytime access to the sleeping car.

If you want sleeping facilities for three passengers, you need to pay for sleeping facilities for three passengers.

Since your child is 3..i encourage you to call Amtrak and make the reservation by phone with an agent. Many time they will add the third person to a roomette if they are an infant or toddler. 3 adults will not fly, but since your 3rd is 3...they may allow it.

The ideal solution would be to book a bedroom instead of a Roomette. The bedroom is more expensive (though often cheaper than two Roomettes) but will accomodate the three of you (and it includes a shower which the Roomettes don't).

If you are a small person with a small child (emphasis on small!), then call Amtrak directly to book two adults and one 3 year old child into a Roomette. Just be sure you realize before booking how little the Roomette really is (and there are really only two adult sized seats in the room by day).

When you pay for a roomette, you can people it however you want! I was in the World during 911, and I did not want to fly back to NY with my 2.8 year old because of the stress of airports.

My 6'2'' DH had the upper berth, and daughter and I had the lower.

You do have to book by phone though, as the website will tell you it's too many people....You will also only have paid meals for 2 in a roomette.

You could also book the roomette with 1 ticket, and two coach tickets, and take turns sleeping in the roomette, and sitting in coach seats. You certainly will want to walk around a bit, as the roomettes are small.

i would def. call Amtrak and see if you can just book the 1 roomette. I think you would be ok for 1 night. The little one will fit with you, prob. snuggly, but it should be ok. That way you would pay for 2 adults coach seats and 1 sleeper. i know my DH and i had the roomette and i would say we would of been able to fit our grandson with one of us. Esp. for 1 night.good luck.

I think it might work-but I would say 3 is the limit they would take!I had a thread on the roomette and will bump it for you.Very hard to sleep with the little one-she slept, I didn't on the first night.I had her in her own bed on the second.The beds are very small-not wide as a twin(maybe half)

We made our original AutoTrain ressies as Coach seating for me, DH and DGS-2.5. We have now decided that we'd prefer be in a roomette. I called Amtrak about an hour ago and they absolutely would not let me book a single roomette for the 3 of us, so I just booked 2 roomettes. It will work out better anyway, DGS & I will sleep in one and DH in the other. I got roomettes that are lower level directly across from each other. Two roomettes were cheaper than either a bedroom or family room. On the way back we'll still travel coach. Just felt that we wanted to be more rested for our first day at Disney. We have traveled by the Auto Train many, many times and usually do a roomette at least on the way down.
