I am thinking about taking Amtrak for our next Disney trip but the biggest factor would be to save money. The only way for 1 adult to travel safely overnight with 2 preschoolers would be to get a room, right? I'm thinking that this would negate any potential saving and I should look at flying instead. We would be taking the autotrain as we are staying off property and will need a vehicle.

If you wanted to be comfortable then I would suggest a "room". Now there are a few options.. there is a rommette and then there is a sleeper car.The roomette is still private but the showers and bathrooms are nearby. The sleep has the fold out beds and the bathroom is in the room with you its small) However they both jump the price up.. depending on when you travel it could get costly. Now your car will be a extra $150-300 per trip (again depending on time of year). I would look at the numbers between flying and renting a car and the autotrain.

Amtrak is usually not a money saver...nor a time saver for that matter. It's generally a hassle-saver, but that can even fall through as long-distance trains occasionally, like a few times a month, can get way behind schedule...like 2 or 4 or 12 hours behind schedule.

I have a 1 year old and a 4 year old and the adventure of the auto-train is still a few years off for us for the reasons mentioned above. I can't imagine my 1 year old sleeping in a regular train seat. We have a hard enough time getting him to sleep in his crib some nights, and we don't have the distractions of the other passengers getting up for the bathroom...or making phone calls...or watching a movie into the wee hours. Without a room, you never know who you'll be surrounded by on the train.
