Please share your experiences on an overnight train ride to Orlando. We would be leaving from Greensboro or Raleigh NC.

How is coach for sleeping at night? Are there many stops along the way? Anyone stayed in a roomette?

Look for a thread on the first or second page of this thread titled "All Aboard my train trip report!Choo-choo!". Someone just recently took the train. Also, see the "My trip on wheels" blog link on the main DIS Boards page.

I've taken the overnight train between Boston and Washington. It did stop at a lot of stations, I guess - certainly more stops than an airplane ;). I didn't bother with a roomette (too cheap, and I'm not comfortable sleeping in the same room with a toilet ;)), but I did upgrade to business seating. My route/time allowed me to have both seats, so if I curled up a LOT I could lie down and sleep - advantages to being short.

I took the train from DC to Fl; on the way down I stayed in the bedroom and on the way back I stayed in the roomette. The roomette isn't too bad, we were asleep most of the time anyway. I was a little creeped out by the toliet at first but I liked that better than having to share with strangers. I have some pictures of the roomette if you want to see.

My daughter and I did the Va to FL, with the car last august...It wasnt bad at all. We had a room with a private bath...Had a nice dinner, happy hour was pretty nice. Slept ..the train goes really fast !!!!..we arrived early in stanford, fl...doing it again in August.

Here you go!

that bag is sitting on the toliet and the mug is where the sink folds down

I don't have any pics of the beds down, but basically the two seats fold out to make on bed and the second is folded down from above. The lower bed is designed so your head has to be opposite from the toliet.

I took an overnight train from Greenboro to Atlanta when I was in college. My seats were in coach. I didn't sleep a wink. The train stopped very often and people were getting off and on. There was big fat guy with a Bama hat snoring the whole time. This was over 20 years ago. I still remember that guy. Never again!

If you read lisa-upnorth's trip report (elsewhere/nearby on the transportation board), the roomettes ARE strictly for two people. Only one person per seat, unless one is going to sit on the toilet, and the beds won't hold two even small people.

info is true-2 adults and a 7yr old are a NO GO in a roomette.Amtrak will not let you book it.
