Amsterdam Airport

Is anyone familiar with this airport? I have been there twice but very briefly.

I will be flying through with my two kids (ds7 and dd3) in a couple of weeks and we have to be there for 8 hours! I was thinking about going to see something outside of the airport, until security measures were heightened.

Is there a playing area or anything?

I just asked a friend of mine, who has been numerous times to The Netherlands to visit an old roommate of hers, and this is what she said:

There's a play area in the panorama restaurant in the airport. At the same area, you can also watch planes land and take off. There is also a lot of shopping in the airport.

I don't recommend leaving the airport at all. I don't think the trains have been set up yet where you do not have to transfer trains at Duivendrecht to go anywhere from Schipol. You will get pickpocketed at Duivendrecht no matter how careful you think you are being.

We had an unexpected 8 hours delay at Schipol on our last flight home from Holland. We had 3 of our kids who were then 5, 7, & 9.

And I have always said since then that if I had to be stuck in an airport for a long period of time it is Schipol!

There is a McDonalds with a childrens play area. My kids played and played for hours after we ate! There is also a casino and many bars - not that you will be able to use them with the kids in tow! THere are also many TV's set up around the bars and plenty of seating to relax in.

If you do want to head into Amsterdam, I know we took the train from Central Station (in the middle of Amsterdam) to the little town we were staying in and our train passed right through Schipol and made stops. So if you really wanted to you could head into Amsterdam - it is not unsafe. We were told this also and found it to be like any other big city.

Before the security problems, I was thinking of taking them to the Anne Frank house, but now I am worried about getting back through security.

I am glad there are things to do.
