Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Is Ogopogo protected by the Canadian government? The USA actually has laws to protect Champ. 😍
According to Wikipedia:

"In the 1980s, a local tourism agency offered a cash reward for a proven sighting of the beast. Greenpeace announced that the beast must be filmed and not captured; the Ogopogo was listed as an endangered species."

Okay, I have a new question. Is college/University/graduate school more or less expensive in Canada than majority of the USA?

I think that tuition in Canada is supposed to be somewhat less expensive than it is at American colleges (one number I read online said it was about 27% less), but tuition isn't the only factor you have to consider, as cost of living would also be a large expense that would affect the overall cost of education.

Also, tuition rates for foreign students are often much higher than for Canadian citizens. As an example, for the university I attended, the current cost for Education (the college I was in) is $7,209/year, but for a foreign student, that cost skyrockets to $25,592/year.

For comparison purposes, I picked a totally random state school here in MA, where it tells me that in-state tuition for the School of Education at UMass-Lowell is $16, 182/year. That is only for tuition and fees. That does not include housing, etc. That example has a US program ringing in at over twice as much.

(Disclaimer: This was just a quick comparison. I haven't tried to crunch numbers from a variety of schools. I purposely didn't pick the School of Education from Harvard as my comparable, for example.)

Thanks. I was trying to see if getting my graduate degree in Canada would cost less then here in the USA.

This sounds entirely plausible. Take some time to get this typed up, find a publisher, and then we will use your millions to fund the trip. We don't need @john7994 's measly $4 lottery winnings. I can't believe you have been sitting on this book deal all this time and not acting on it! It's like I hardly even know you!!!
wow - just kicked to the curb ... :sad2:

You were pretty specific about every other part of the trip…just saying

Not targeting you at all, but I do find it a very American thing to think that Canada is the East Coast, Montreal, Toronto, and BC. Everywhere else just gets yadda yadda’d

To be fair (and as an American), earlier in the thread, my road trip suggestion was Oregon, Washing State, and Victoria/Vancouver ... not responsible or related to Buzz :)

You aren't helping yourself here...ha ha! Still no mention of the Canadian prairies! Victoria/Vancouver are the "BC" to which @prairie_girl was referring. It often feels like the only parts of Canada that exist are Vancouver/Victoria, maybe a couple of ski towns, Calgary/Edmonton IF you are lucky, and then there is supposedly nothing as you head east until you start hitting Toronto/Ottawa/Quebec. Sometimes the Maritimes will get an honourable mention, especially for scenery.

Sorry. No hard feelings? (Not trying to make things weird. That is supposed to be a hug. I couldn't find a good "I'm sorry!" emoji. Here. Have a flower. :flower1:)

I meant no disrespect. I would love to see Canada coast to coast. Just like I think all 50 states and territories should be seen in one’s lifetime.

@john7994 , your welcome to join the fictional trip too. :-)
Of course @john7994 can come! He was here in the discussion before I made the rule about how you had to be a participant of the thread BEFORE the point where the trip really started coming to life. It is anybody who comes AFTER him that will have to worry about standing before the Grand High Council to state their case and perhaps grovel a bit, if they want to be considered for a seat.

Likely quite a bit more, but just think of the life experience you would gain...priceless!!!
Maybe my dating life would improve too. I mean a Canadian woman that’s my age should be able to look past the fact I’m a NY Rangers fan, right? *Buzz looks around the room and hears crickets* “right?”. 🤷‍♂️🤣

Well, you could do what my daughter does. She and her boyfriend will go and watch the Sox when the Blue Jays play so that she can cheer for her team and he can cheer for his. They do the same for the Bruins.

The thing about being single in Canada is that you can always take advantage of "cuffng season" in the fall. I will leave you to look it up (it isn't anything bad, it basically refers to people pairing up in the fall so they don't need to go through the long cold winter alone) and then when you know what cuffing season is, the following Cuffing Season Schedule will make a whole lot more sense.

As a Yankees fan I’m obligated to do a friendly banter “booo” to your daughter’s boyfriend (but I hope they continue to have a great relationship :-) ). Thanks for information @Frozen Canuck. If we go to a NY Rangers vs Canadian team game on the road trip, maybe I‘ll connect with a single Canadian home fan. Who knows.🤣🏒 I’m willing to try curling too if it will increase my dating options.🥌🤣

It couldn't hurt to give it a go, eh? Grab your broom and I'll meet you at the rink to give you a few pointers.

Haha ... I didn't mention the US Midwest either and I am from Chicago, Illinois. Then there are those US "flyover" states - although I did mention a few of those in a previous post. Truth be told, I have been to Thunder Bar and Sault Saint Marie and thats about all i can say aboot that :)
