Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Haha ... I didn't mention the US Midwest either and I am from Chicago, Illinois. Then there are those US "flyover" states - although I did mention a few of those in a previous post. Truth be told, I have been to Thunder Bar and Sault Saint Marie and thats about all i can say aboot that :)
I live in Nebraska now. We are defintely considered by most as a "flyover" state, but I've come to love it here.

What did really blow my mind though was going up to Smith Falls State Park in northern Nebraska, where you can walk into the falls. As someone who grew up with my comparison waterfall being Athabasca Falls in Alberta where going in the falls meant death, it was crazy to me!

For the record, I have been on a road trip twice through Nebraska (I80) - on purpose even!

Okay, I have a new question. Is college/University/graduate school more or less expensive in Canada than majority of the USA?
Buzz, I went to school in the USA! Drove across the border two days a week for a year/2 semesters for teachers college. It was VERY expensive as a foreign student when the dollar was not good. Would possibly be the same for you, but right now the dollar is in the Americans favour so may be more economical? Maybe.

Maybe in our fictional world we can do a meet up and go watch my Jets beat up on the Rangers..
Absolutely! In fact, I would bet that all of us cheering for the Jets in the stands would be enough to push them to win!
In this fantasy dream do I get a tax free trip to WDW? My rangers are playing pretty well so far this season…… 😂

Well, you could do what my daughter does. She and her boyfriend will go and watch the Sox when the Blue Jays play so that she can cheer for her team and he can cheer for his. They do the same for the Bruins.

The thing about being single in Canada is that you can always take advantage of "cuffng season" in the fall. I will leave you to look it up (it isn't anything bad, it basically refers to people pairing up in the fall so they don't need to go through the long cold winter alone) and then when you know what cuffing season is, the following Cuffing Season Schedule will make a whole lot more sense.

Well your daughter is probably happier then her boyfriend right now with the Bruins loosing 1-0 to Toronto right now.

Edit: Okay that joke didn’t age well. Toronto 1- Bruins 1.

Edit 2: Toronto 3- Bruins 4.

Sorry, this is a side trip for two

We’re higher in the standings. We actually play there on Feb 20 lol

I American and had a hotpot in college many years ago. It was one of the few electric appliances we were allowed to have in the dorms. Mine was like a tiny coffee pot that plugged. You could heat water for oatmeal, cocoa or ramen noodles.
Same, I had a hotpot in college. No other cooking appliances were allowed in dorm rooms. Even tiny coffee makers were verboten.

It wasn’t the same as what I consider an electric kettle. The hotpot could warm up canned soup, canned Beefaroni, etc., in addition to boiling water. An electric kettle was just for boiling water.

Here’s one American who has willingly visited the Prairie Provinces. Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

Winnipeg Jets (both editions)
Calgary Flames
Edmonton Oilers (and a University of Alberta game)

During two seasons in the 90s, the NHL had each team play two neutral site games. I attended one in Saskatoon. I’d have to look it up to be sure, but I think it was St.Louis Blues, who at one time in the 80s were rumored to be moving to Saskatoon.

I visited other places in these areas besides the NHL arenas.

Loved everything about this post, except their apparent lack of affection for and attention to CANADA'S TEAM - The Raptors. :cheer2:The North Remembers!
As a Yankees fan I’m obligated to do a friendly banter “booo” to your daughter’s boyfriend (but I hope they continue to have a great relationship :-) ). Thanks for information @Frozen Canuck. If we go to a NY Rangers vs Canadian team game on the road trip, maybe I‘ll connect with a single Canadian home fan. Who knows.🤣🏒 I’m willing to try curling too if it will increase my dating options.🥌🤣
Fun Fact: Curling, which is arguably Canada's second-most culturally meaningful sport, was actually invented elsewhere (in Scotland). Hockey was invented here, basketball was invented by a Canadian abroad, and baseball, which was not invented so much as derived from rounders/cricket, was first introduced to North America and played in Canada, in the late 1800's.

Well, if you loved that trip around the lakehead, you simply MUST drive through Wyoming. Most of it looks like a barren lunar landscape and with about 1/3 population of Saskatchewan, I truly hope you're an introvert. :goodvibes

:wave2:Just wanted to say Welcome to someone who seems like a fellow Alberta homegrown!

I live in KS and have no problem with being called a flyover state. People just don't know what they are missing anyhow ;) But IRL I do tend to get a lot of surprising views once people actually come here. I used to talk to insurance agents from all over and I never forgot how the NY agents had no idea it got that cold here or that hot here. Like they'd ask "what's the weather like where you're at" and I'd say "oh it's -5" and they would be like "I didn't realize it got that cold there". There's just a general lack of knowledge of the middle of the U.S. mostly NE and KS IMO. MO might be in that too depending on the topic.

I almost had a trip to Omaha zoo back in the fall. I was attempting to find a Global Entry appointment and the soonest I could get was Omaha (about 3 hours north of me) and we were going to do a quick trip there. I was able to get an appointment at my home airport (45mins from my house) about a month later than that Omaha appointment so sadly that trip didn't come to fruition. I haven't been there since I was a young kid.

While I live in suburbia in a metro area I have fields of crops all around me and country very close by, the feeling of comfort you get going by a corn, wheat, sorghum or soybean field may sound odd to others but right at home to me :)

Fun fact: Canada has 4 legendary sea serpents (more if you count legends from shared lakes between the USA and Canada).
