Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Can an immigrant run for prime minister? The U.S. President needs to be a native born citizen.

As Prairie Girl said, yes an immigrant can be Prime Minister as long as they are a Canadian citizen. The Governor General of Canada, has recently had 2 immigrants hold the office. Michaëlle Jean (born in Haiti) and Adrienne Clarkson (born in Hong Kong).

Canada has met USA 6 times in the Olympic men’s ice hockey finals. Our record is 5-1 soooo
:confused3
I meant we have talented Americans period. I totally respect your athletes though. I do root for Canada when the United States isn’t playing (see my WCQ thread when Canada is playing).

Were both of them considered dual citizens with the country they were born to? Dual citizenship has always been an interesting topic to me.

Yes, you definitely have a stocked stable of talented players as well. Our (Jets) rely on a Vezina winning American goalie and we won’t let him go easily.

I’m technically a duel citizen. I can travel with a Canadian or Australian passport and I could easily get a work visa for there as well. Because I live in Canada, and have for close to 40 years, I consider myself a Canadian at heart.

Do you travel to Australia from time to time?

I know for the U.S. you're supposed to use your U.S. passport when leaving and then when coming back into the U.S. is this the same with Canada to use Canadian passports?

:rolleyes1Now if only we could claim Julie Payette had been born somewhere else...

We do have socialistic leanings but are still very much a capitalistic country.

Just like the USA.

The Queen of England is literally the Queen of Canada. Even if she is just a symbolic figure head you still have another country's monarch as yours.

The concept of having a Royal Family is just weird to me and I wouldn't want to live under any monarch but to each their own.

I've always thought it was funny that there always seems to be a much higher interest in the Royal Family in the US when compared to Canada.

This is American Culture now. It has been so long since they've had it, I wonder if Canadians remember what it is?

The Stanley Cup.

That's OK, the actual cup never leaves Canada.

Fairy tales..in a nutshell Disney has a lot to do with it, lot of us grew up with it, the princess marrying the prince, the rarer but still done commoner meeting a prince and marrying him, etc. There's partial fascination with a royal family insomuch that we don't have one here. The Royalty (meaning many many families not just England) also sell their image and have for decades on this to the people throughout the world. That Jamaica story I was talking about from the Netflix episode? They watched the Royal weddings there too although their interest in the Royal family appears to be less rose-colored glasses that Americans may see it more.

There is far more socialistic leanings in Canada as compared to the USA. It amazes me how many Canadians spend money in Cuba. Especially Eastern Europeans living in Canada that escaped that sort of government.
There is far more interest in Canada for the royal family as compared to the interest in the USA. Remember, I live in both places. You don’t. I live the differences.

Yes.

Have you not seen any of the recent 50-80 page threads on all things Royal? From my recollection, it isn’t Canadians starting those threads.

I don't see an issue with spending money in Cuba, it's a great place to vacation. Given the number of Americans that want to go there, I think they would agree.

Anytime a Royal sneezes there is a tv special about it in the US. There is far more interest in the US than Canada. Most Canadians could give a rat's **** about the Royal family.

Some of us do. :)
Just don’t have the obsession with Harry and Meghan that was on the mega thread

One trip to BC we stayed at a family friend's investment condo in Vancouver. There wasn't much there. Just a normal sofa and a king sized bed, so I got to sleep on the sofa. But a previous occupant had left behind most of a box of Cuban cigars. That seemed really weird because the embargo against Cuban goods was something I knew well, even though I'd probably never have cause to buy anything Cuban made at age 17.

I think there were a few episodes of Frasier that involved Canada. One was a friend of Martin Crane in Customs who had confiscated a box of Cuban cigars and then gave it to him rather than destroying the box. Or another one where Daphne doesn't realize that they've entered Canada (without travel documents being checked) in a rented RV and panics because her visa for the US doesn't allow her to leave.

Canadians, how big is the Toronto vs Montreal rivalry? I ask because their MLS teams are playing each other Saturday night at 7:30pm and I’m curious how much advertisement it gets? ⚽🇨🇦

Like it's our fault your hockey players like us better. We stole them fair and square.
I think it's possible to field a pretty competitive team without Canadian players. But of course players get distributed across all teams so it would take a deliberate effort to achieve that.
