Canadians, how do you view the rivalry between the USA vs Canada in sports? Do you view it as a must win no matter the sport or just that it would be nice to beat the USA for once? 🤔

Question for Americans: Why do you purposely leave your cabinet doors without handles? I'm just learning of this here on the DIS today and I'm flabbergasted.

I am Canadian and we don’t have handles on our kitchen cabinet. We do one our bathroom ones but it is mostly for looks. I open it on the corner probably since we didn’t have handles growing up either

Canadians, how are you taught about the War of 1812? Are you taught that it was a draw or clear win for Canada? As I said in an earlier post, we are taught that it was a draw (with negative set backs for non-whites). This Smithsonian article was interesting as it gives a British vs American perspective on the war.

I have an ancestor that fought for the USA in the war, so I’m curious if you have an ancestor who fought in the war or Napoleonic Wars does it affect your perspective on the event?

The XYZ Affair/ Quasi War (around the French Revolution/Napoleonic Era) is barely mentioned in high schools here in the USA. I assume that’s the same amount of relevance it gets in Canada (even though Canada/Britain were slightly affected by it). Curious to hear your perspective on the event and how you were taught. :-)

I have never seen it in my life. Is it common in your area?

You can order anything you want. There's just a lip around the cabinet door that one can stick a finger inside. Even then one can order a cabinet with handles anyways.

OMG, Victoria has tons of ghost stories! We have haunted walks and bus tours all the time!

Haunted Victoria
We went to Victoria for a couple of days at the end of June (just at the beginning of the whole heat dome heat wave) and did a ghostly walking tour one night, it was super fun and very informative!

The British won the war of 1812.

Boxing Day sorta seems similar to our Black Friday. Traditionally Black Friday was the day after Thanksgiving with big shopping deals and businesses may be closed depending on what they are (retail def. not closed). Over the years it crept up until many deals occurred on Thanksgiving. Then again over time "Black Friday" deals started occurring earlier and earlier to the point where Black Friday these days is really more of a shopping season rather than 1 day you now see Black Friday deals in October and November. Plus there's been a push for retailers to be closed on Thanksgiving (which has pushed Black Friday deals to not be as big of a deal too).

The day after Christmas though is historically more seen as the return day but there's also sales that go on especially holiday-oriented items.
There are still some provinces (in the maritimes I believe) that do NOT open on December 26th so they will have Boxing Day sales starting on December 27th. Now with the advent of online shopping, we don't even set foot in a store on Boxing Day (long gone are the days of lining up at 3am outside of Future Shop or A&B Sound...) and do it all online, sometimes even on Christmas Eve :rotfl2:
