Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Nope, not a snowball's chance, even though I do have a hole in my schedule. The Raptors aren't playing either of those nights. :wave2:

I've never met a Canadian alive that called it anything other than pop, except maybe as an affectation.

That is just so bizarre; I didn't know it before I saw it discussed here on the DIS. Do you know what the origin of it is? :confused3
Well, I’m still hoping Canada and the USA win both their games. But I totally respect those that don’t care anyway. I do wonder if any on this board actually view my WCQ thread. Anyway, back to other topics. Thanks for the response.

True but I was just talking about the interest level of Americans. Find a pic of the 2018 U.S. men's team and you'll know what I'm talking about and all the news stories about it. The dad bods were all anyone could talk about lol at least around here. The interest level skyrocketed and suddenly all of us were glued to our TV, there was a relatable factor. Like I said in my last comment about great skill of course it takes that. Don't take my comment as anything more than explaining how curling got huge attention here in the U.S :)

I knew who you were talking about but they were not the norm.

Haven’t heard about it at all and I actively watch sports programs and follow several on Twitter.

Me neither. I watch TSN and Sportsnet all the time and I wouldn't say they are making a big deal about it. Have they talked about it, sure they have but they are not doing it anymore than the normally would.

I never said they were. Again I was talking about how Americans seemingly got really into it.

On the topic of curling it is something that I feel like Americans got more interested in watching it from the Olympics especially the last winter Olympics when we took gold. The idea that a person not 100% athletically fit even someone with a "dad bod" if you will can do well made a lot of people start talking about it. Don't get me wrong curling looks quite strenuous and takes great skill to get things just right.

If you want more backup you can look at Tarheel's comment regarding her husband's interest when he watched it during the 2014 Olympics.

I'm not entirely certain here but it almost reads like you're thinking I'm speaking down upon the sport, I assure I am not.

Canadians/Americans, will you be tuning into the big WCQ games on Friday and Tuesday ( or my WCQ thread for updates)? I wanted to ask this here because I keep hearing Canada media is making a big deal about the games and I’m curious if it’s true. Please don’t throw a tomato at me prairie_girl. *ducks behind a soccer goal*. ⚽🇨🇦🇺🇸:duck:🥅

No and I haven’t heard anything much on media about it.

Not at all, just saying that's not the norm at the high level. At the recreational level, it certainly is.

This thread is really hard to keep up with, so I apologize if any of this has been said already.

Just as American English is different from British English or Spanish Spanish is different from Mexican Spanish. To my ear, French Canadians sound a bit like ducks compared to people from France.

There are different kinds of Canadian French, as well. There are different accents and dialects- people in Quebec City speak a bit differently than the Acadians in northeastern New Brunswick. And then you have the Madawaska region (western NB and northern Aroostook County, ME), which kind of combines the two.

I never tried anything there except traditional poutine.

Ahhh, all this talk of "traditional" poutine, but if you ask an Acadian what traditional poutine is, they'll have a very different answer! Poutine as most know it came around in the 1950s, but "poutines" are traditionally little round dumplings of sorts. Then we have poutine rapee which involves grated potatoes and poutines a trous, which are little apple dumplings. My father and his siblings have always been quick to remind my generation of the original use of the word poutine when referring to food.

Anyone else old enough to remember the Zeller’s ads with “Club Zed?”

(I’m from the U.S., but grew up just south of the border where the Canadian TV stations came in better than the American ones. It was also before you needed ID to cross the border, so we went North a lot for school field trips and stuff.)

I'm also from the US and spent summers in a border area (didn't live there, but my father was from there and my parents had a camp there.) You just unlocked a memory for me- Zeddy! I don't remember Club Z but I do remember the bear. There was a Zeller's at the closest mall (over the border) and we got the commercials, since we only got the Canadian stations without cable.

was it like black friday at the border? still waiting on our wheat farmer from canada.

I don’t know but our paper had an article on Monday of people complaining about requiring a negative test to re enter the country. I can’t remember the acronym for what is needed, but the rapid test is not acceptable. It costs about $150-$200 if I remember correctly. I am on the side of needing a test. Even though there is a large segment of people who say the pandemic is over, it is far from over. My city is very close to doing another lockdown of some sort.

PCR test I believe.

That was what they called it on their menu.

I was raised on the prairies, and for as cheesy as it sounds, my heart is in the prairies. I can't see myself moving back to anything east of

I truly was one of those very obnoxious Canadians who would skip over the prairies, in my head, on a cross Canada road trip. I remember being twelve and questioning border times. The same disrespect I would give to some US states, playing favourites.

Until I sat in the dome car of The Canadian (@mommasita :lmao: your favourite train) and absolutely fell in love. Of course the Rockies are the show for most. But I sat there in that dome and truly felt I was in a dreamscape. I still picture it at times.

Do you have a timeline for return? Or simply letting life flow?

Very. It’s everywhere. My husband curls EARLY every weekend. He loves it.

The EARLY made me smile. It read "umm no thanks".

It gets made fun of but it’s a great sport. There’s a lot of strategy involved.

God how I hated it. :lmao:

See, in my major Ontario city, I don’t know of a single person who curls. I also have no idea where a curling club is. I feel it may be regional? Kinda like so many other things!

Grew up around curling, Toronto.

That made me go look...the club that I curled at stopped its curling program in 2020 (it was announced in 2019, so not pandemic related). Kind of makes me sad.

I saw your post and went to google too. Mine is still up and running (with year round tennis). But it did have a blurb that they knew people were inquiring there due to club closures and organizations dropping curling from their offerings.
So your club was not alone. :worried: Makes local bonspiels rather difficult.

I got ya.

I knew Olympic curlers. They were not what I would ever call elite athletes. Skilled at curling and what was needed to compete at their high level of course, but not the body one would study for high performance.

I think they should experiment with dropping it for day trips.

Thanks for the responses. What I was partly referring to was some TSN radio stations who seem to be each day this week talking about the upcoming games. Some of the stations were questioning whether soccer would become a permanent interest to the Canadian non soccer public if Canada qualified for Qatar 2022. Others talked about the stadium almost reaching 50,000 in sold tickets for each game and Team Canada merchandise being sold out due to the games. Another staton was auctioning off a Davies jersey for charity. So that’s where the question was coming from. Thanks for the insight. Whether your a fan or not, I wish both our countries well. :-)
