Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

[QUOTE="Mackenzie Click-Mickelson, post: 6351. On the other hand we watched Suicide Squad on HBO Max for free (thank goodness we did because the 2021 version was awful, one of the worst movies I've ever seen).
[/QUOTE]

Agreed. I was clueless as to what type of movie it was. My husband says ”let’s watch this”. I was horrified and had trouble sleeping. Awful. It should be banned everywhere. My nephew (12), is not allowed to watch, I called my sister in law right away but she knew about it.

Nunavut, I would think Winnipeg (winter peg 😉) after that.
It gets pretty frosty come January and February here with the windshield, but we become used to it.

Winnipeg is no colder than Edmonton, Saskatoon or Regina. Edmonton and Saskatoon may be colder as they are much further North.

And Toronto peeps like to tell us that they are much worse off as it’s a wet cold there and dry cold on the prairies.

HBO Max. I’ve read little bits here and there about friends watching current releases on that for free. I’d like to do that. There’s a couple others too I feel are American only, but we aren’t missing much. Oh Hulu is another I think. No Hulu here.

Crave gets all the HBO Max stuff

You Canadians are lucky when it comes to your National Men’s Soccer team. You can watch your national team play on TV for both the home and away WCQ matches. In the USA we have to pay extra for the away USA games. 🙁

And you were doing so good by keeping soccer out of this thread!

“I never understood why we pronounce the letter Z as “zee” while Canadians say “zed””

It totally is, same as how we spell certain words with a "u" and you do not, such as colour.

Anyone else old enough to remember the Zeller’s ads with “Club Zed?”

(I’m from the U.S., but grew up just south of the border where the Canadian TV stations came in better than the American ones. It was also before you needed ID to cross the border, so we went North a lot for school field trips and stuff.)

 What's available on HBO Max that isn't available on the HBO we get? Pretty sure we get all the HBO Originals.
I could be wrong but I think they were referring to movies released on HBO Max simultaneously with theaters. Warner Bros for instances has their entire 2021 film releases with this model so movies are released on HBO Max and theaters the same day. The movie stays on HBO Max for 30 days before reverting to only theatrical release (and then eventually other streaming,dvd/blu-ray releases).

We have HBO Max included in our cable package and could have watched Dune for free but opted for the movie theater (I may actually try to rewatch that before it leaves HBO Max). On the other hand we watched Suicide Squad on HBO Max for free (thank goodness we did because the 2021 version was awful, one of the worst movies I've ever seen).

This. The Heights was available to HBO max subscribers for free and it was released during the heights (ha!) of the third wave here I believe. I have no idea how much HBO Max costs but watching new releases at home at that time for the monthly fee vs a pay per movie would have been lovely.

Edit to add, we don’t have “the ways” to watch hbo max or Hulu. It’s a “would be nice” but I’m not going to figure out how to do it. If it was here, we might use it.

We have pretty similar access to American TV, movies, music. I don't think there is anything I'm missing that I would watch stateside that I can't in Canada. I think this sharing is a large part of why many people believe there is little difference between the two countries, not the only reason but a significant one. In reality, we can have some pretty different values, lifestyles etc.

Absolutely. We discussed it way upthread. Our shared pop-culture (based on being completely saturated by American entertainment and news media for more than half-a-century now) is superficial and does not truly define who we are - on either side of the border. We may look alike and sound alike but we are not the same.

Canadians/Americans, what is the biggest sports story this week in your country?

Sports are local/regional really. National sports are really a niche unless it's for a really big even like the Olympics or FIFA World Cup.

Here it's the Golden State Warriors and their 7-1 start after two disappointing seasons.

Tired of hearing about the Green Bay Packer who got covid but wasn’t vaccinated but said he was or something to that effect….seen it on the news a few times different channels. Plus my son is a fan so I hear about it more because he can’t play…lol

Aaron Rodgers? He's been playing games claiming that he was "immunized" when he was previously infected.

Canadians, would you ever consider immigrating to the USA? I know some on this thread brought up the idea of immigrating to Canada. So I wonder if there is interest both ways?

No. My sister is a dual. My mother was in Florida for her usually trip, and gave birth two months early. I think I go more than her, lol.

At this point of our lives, no but twice we seriously considered it for DHs job opportunities ( once to Boston and another time to Northern California) . Both times it fell though and I am happy we stayed here.
