Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

So I was just watching a tv series called City Confidential with each episode being about a different place. This one was about a small town in PA where in 1992 an 11 year old was kidnapped and eventually died a few days before Halloween (her body found a day before Halloween but she went missing after attending a Halloween party a few days before). The killers were eventually discovered with a DNA match in 2002 with a trial happening in 2005 a subsequent trial of a co-conspirator in 2005 as well. From 1993-2007 nighttime trick and treating was banned and instead trick or treating happened during daylight (this was for fear of further violence, in 1995 an attempted kidnapping of a woman did occur). The town eventually healed enough for them to feel comfortable again for nighttime trick or treating.

These days I don't know if that would have necessarily happened (the nighttime ban) because forensics and technology is much better than the '90s and early 2000's but it was more that an ironic episode given the earlier conversation about trick or treating timing. In this case I understand how back in that time that small town did what they thought might help.

PrairieGirl - There’s a Purdy’s store at St Vital Mall. I’ve been enjoying Hedgehogs for years.

I can’t remember the last time I stepped into a mall lol. I couldn’t eat them anyway because of my tree nut allergy but thanks for the info all the same :)

I'd be OK with a Tim Hortons around here.

Not true, in fact there were communities in New Brunswick that did trick or treating last night. Communities are free to decide when they would like it to happen.
Really? Wow, that's interesting. Huh, see this thread is very, very informative!

I remember there was a congressional bill a couple of years ago that proposed that the Saturday closest to Halloween should be called Trick or Treat day as a separate holiday for kids. Halloween would then be used as however communities would like. Never heard how close it got to passing though. November 1st is a Catholic holy day of observation, so I actually like this idea, in that Halloween could be used as a transition into All Saints Day. All Souls Day is November 2nd so it keeps with the theme anyway.

Got an e-mail from one of my cousins in Ottawa today. Apparently See's Candy is not shipping candy to Canada this year due to covid. I have no idea why that would be.
For decades my mom would ship each of her 4 siblings See's candy for Christmas. Mom, and all her siblings are gone now. Some of my cousins started ordering their own See's as a Christmas tradition. I will have to do some leg work to see if there is a work around.

Are they sold near you? Easy answer is for you to purchase them and ship them to your cousins, or at worst; have them shipped to you and you re-package and ship to the cousins.

$116 for shipping estimate, seems kind of steep to me. But my primary concern is that customs would confiscated them. I am wondering why See's has stopped shipping to Canada and if that would also prevent me from shipping them.

According to their website if you need to ship internationally you would call 800.347.7337

Maybe you could call and ask if there is a particular issue (like customs, shipping costs, etc) for Canada.

My cousin did. They said they aren't shipping to Canada without further explaination.

If they were in Canada they would have called a different number (according to their website it would have been 310.604.6200). Maybe try yourself the 800 number listed and ask..if you're really interested and see if they give you any additional information :)

Not totally related, but it does sound a lot like Dateline. And of course we can thank Canada for bringing us Keith Morrison.

If I may suggest, call Rheo Thompson in Stratford Ontario and they will of course ship in Canada. They take American cash as well, I’ve sent them cash. And cards over the phone. Better than sees candy and easier. I’ve had it sent to the USA as well but that did not end up well one of the times.

My cousin is in Canada and he only wants Sees so that won't work. It is a family tradition.

There are some companies that "host" American shipping addresses for Canadians. My parents use I think its UPS shipping service in Buffalo or whatever, they pay a certain amount for some type of P.O Box, if there is something that only ships to the US they have it sent there and from there UPS will either ship the parcel on to them, or they can go pick it up (for them its only about a 20 minute drive to cross the border).

If your cousins are in Ottawa maybe there is somewhere you can ship it to one of those New York border towns closer to Ottawa and they can go pick it up. Depends how badly they want their See's lol

We live about an hour from the border and there are a few places that let you ship to their address and you just have to go pick it up. I’ve never done it but know lots of people who have. $116 for shipping seems a little doubtful, but I do know shipping from the US to Canada can be way more than the total of your purchase.

That is the price my cousin was quoted and is about what my mom paid to ship a 3 pound package back in 2011, the last year she sent Sees to her siblings.

There's this little curiosity of land called Point Roberts, Washington.

It's really bizarre because they have no school there beyond K-3, and kids are bused to a school in the Washington state mainland, which requires two border crossings each way. They might be able to use NEXUS to speed things up at the border.

Their economy was built on selling goods and (especially shipping) services to Canadians. They've had a rough go of it recently. They're looking forward to November 8, although it's going to be tough since Canada still requires a negative COVID-19 test result to return, regardless of vaccination status. But the state of Washington is going to help pay for the tests for Canadian residents who have property in Point Roberts. They're the most likely to be willing to stay there for more than a day trip.
