This is the first year I've seen American Idol on TV. With my work schedules I don't usually get to watch anything on a regular basis and then it's usually whatever my wife is watching.

The first time I saw the auditions I thought the show might just be a spoof on one of the other talent contests (I'm still not sure it isn't). City after city young people filled stadiums to get their chance at being a star. Thousands of them... thousands!

As I watched the judges suffer through dozens of pathetic attempts at singing (they were supposed to be singing, weren't they?) I thought to myself they should at least have someone screening the participants. Then I saw that the producers were doing that. Okay, this has got to be a spoof!

The judges, Simon, in particular, were taking a lot of heat for being cruel and unfair. I'm sorry, but that should describe the producers, not the judges. The judges have every reason to be angry at the producers for putting them through such nonsense.

Now here's my question: If you had a friend who wanted to go on this show, or one like it, and really couldn't sing at a competitive level, would you be a good enough friend to tell them not to do it?

I just have a problem believing there's that many people out there that don't have someone close enough to keep them from making fools of themselves.

Maybe it IS a spoof...

My friends would know if they are good enough to try out, but there are some people on there that try out for different reasons. One guy wanted to find a girlfriend, and I heard tonight that the William-She bangs dude had gotten a $25,000 contract. So you don't have to be picked or you don't have to be good to actually get something out of it. Some people may just want the experience of saying that they did try out for American Idol.

I like William Hung (the she bang guy). I told DH that all he needs is a makeover. lol.

I don't care whether it's staged or not. I like to watch the show, even though I know they have to be putting in really bad singers just to make people laugh.

Well this is certainly not American Idol.... but, my DH is the head of the music ministry at our church. Every week someone sings during the offering. Well, since our church is on the small size and my DH is such a nice person, you would not believe the people from our congregation who want to get up and sing who have no singing ability at all!! It is amazing to me, my DH and I always have discussions after Sunday service about the singing that day, and have a hard time believing that these people don't know that they can't carry a tune! BUT THEY APPARENTLY DON'T!! On top of that, there family sits in the congregation and has to endure the pain also, you would think they would say something, I know I would. Anyway, bottom line.... I think the people on American Idol really believe they CAN sing and can't see any reason why they shouldn't move to the next level.
