This is the first year I've seen American Idol on TV. With my work schedules I don't usually get to watch anything on a regular basis and then it's usually whatever my wife is watching.
The first time I saw the auditions I thought the show might just be a spoof on one of the other talent contests (I'm still not sure it isn't). City after city young people filled stadiums to get their chance at being a star. Thousands of them... thousands!
As I watched the judges suffer through dozens of pathetic attempts at singing (they were supposed to be singing, weren't they?) I thought to myself they should at least have someone screening the participants. Then I saw that the producers were doing that. Okay, this has got to be a spoof!
The judges, Simon, in particular, were taking a lot of heat for being cruel and unfair. I'm sorry, but that should describe the producers, not the judges. The judges have every reason to be angry at the producers for putting them through such nonsense.
Now here's my question: If you had a friend who wanted to go on this show, or one like it, and really couldn't sing at a competitive level, would you be a good enough friend to tell them not to do it?
I just have a problem believing there's that many people out there that don't have someone close enough to keep them from making fools of themselves.
Maybe it IS a spoof...
