American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

Ok Gideon has to go....he can sing but his attitude is obnoxious and has been from the beginning...he really belongs in a broadway show type setting...not on the radio.

Kevin....come on....what is with that song? I would be totally shocked if that dialidol is right.

I thought Taylor was great, Chris was great and Elliot was ok.

I hope Kevin, Will, Gideon and Ace are the next to go.

One funny thing about Paula...someone posted how she wears low cut shirts when the boys are on...and she certainly did...those puppies were barking to get out! I actually thought she was on better behavior this week then last week. At least she wasn't hitting and hanging on Simon. She is just a mess.
She just rambles on and on and the contestants are looking at her puzzled trying to figure out what she is saying. She really needs to go and be replaced with someone else...JMHO.

That is exactly what I have been saying! He sounds just like Jim Neighbors!
I really wish he wasn't in this comp. this year. Had he waited till he was about 18 I think he would be so much better. Plus I am so tired of Paula and her sex symbol comments about him.

:confused3 I am not hearing the same thing you are. Kevin's voice is waayyy too nasally. He looked and sounded like he was singing in a middle school play last night. He should have waited until he was a couple of years older to enter this competition.

I have known her since she was five, she is not a man.

Could have fooled me. She looks like she's on steroids. We just can't get past her looks. Sorry.

Kevin - lets face it, say what you want about the kid being young or being on the nerdy side or nervous, but the kid has a hell of a voice for a 16 yr old. He's like a modern day Jim Neighbors. What you see and what you hear are completely different and surprising. Is he pop/rock/idol material. No. But once he matures I could see him have an excellent career on Broadway.

I know he probably won't make pass this round, but he sure is a star in the neighborhhood. Our neighborhood has never been on the map like this :)
That's unless every high school kid in Island Trees & Levittown called in a zillion times!

Well teh boys were definitely much more interesting than the girls were. My man Chris was "ON" as usual (though not his absolute best performance thusfar, it was still great!).

Gedeon: You seem like a nice enough guy, but you look creepy, and you TALK creepy. What is with the over enunciation?? As for the singing...well I can hear singing that good at church. If you make it through to next week (and I hope you don't) you'll be out relatively quickly.

Chris: Infallible.

Will: What did you sing? Boring, whatever it was. I think you're out tonight too.

Taylor: My man! I don't care how weird you are, I'd buy your album! He was rocking! Perfect song choice. As soon as DH and I heard him say "taking it to the street" we looked at each other and smiled.

Kevin: Ok...It's not PC, but "Vincent" is just a LAME song. He sang it nice enough. And I hope he makes it through cause I like him. But what a tragically lame song.

Ace: That vacant stare he has is just awful. And the "beenie"???? Come ON ladies...He's this years Constantine. Like a bad caricature. That blank deer-in-the-head-lights look is too much to bare. The song was horrible IMO. He may skate through on (barf) sex appeal, but he won't last. Plus he's got bizarre long monkey arms...

Bucky: I couldn't understand a word he was singing. BUT, the melody sounded pretty good. It was country, so not my thing. He seems like a ncie guy (and a fellow NC'er, so he's "my people"). He seems genuine. I don't think he'll win overall, but I think he should stick around a bit longer.

Elliot: Oh Elliot...dude...I really like you. WHO picked that song? He sang it the best he could and had some terrific moments, but it wasn't his best, and it was placed VERY poorly (after Taylor's really upbeat piece). He'll sail though thanks to awesome past performances and I think he'll be wiser aout song selection in the future.

My final 6?
Chris
Taylor
Elliot
Kevin
Bucky
Ace

I found Chris' song choice to be very poor and I am a die-hard rock fan. That particular Seether song is somewhat monotone and, after watching it back, found he had trouble finding some of the notes. He is still my second favorite and wish him the best of luck.

The best of the night was Taylor. I really believe he LOVES music. So much, that he doesn't care how it affects him and how people react to it. I see a lot of people say that they are turned off by his "moves" but there are tons of great artists out there who have signature moves that are a little silly.... if you think about it (i.e. Stevie Wonder's constant head sway, Mick Jagger's strut, Dave Matthew's pigeon-toed hoe down, etc).

I knew Ruben was gonna win from the start of the final 12...he was the best singer that season....I told my wife alot of babies are gonna be made listening to him....I compared him to Luther Vandross....he was great and deserved the win....Where AI has failed is Season 1 and the season Fantasia won

Ruben the best singer? I don't think so. I think the public has proven that out. How much have we heard from Ruben as opposed to Clay since season 2? And you have to be kidding about AI failing in Season 1. Hello? Can you say Grammy? That doesn't get awarded by giggling teenagers, but by musical peers.

Dialidol results are very interesting this morning!!! I find them hard to believe though. If you go to www.dialidol.com you may be surprised!

it just goes to show you, AI isn't about the best voice or even the best performer, but who is most popular. We've debated this ad infinitum over the past five seasons. The male singer who is leading the voting is getting the votes due to the demographics he appeals to that match the demographics of the show. I also believe it does have a lot to do with how good the person is at playing the audience. No surprise at the leader in both the female and the male categories there. Both have done a great job of playing to the audience. On the other hand, two of the trailers are way more talented, but one is too staid in her performance and the other may have turned off people with his attitude.

More unvarnished opinions, this time on the guys:

Gedeon: Not sure who said it, but saying he belongs on Broadway is an insult to Broadway. Sorry, but I like the "style" of music he's going for, and if I was unfortunate enough to hear him singing on the radio, I'd break a finger hitting the "seek" button.

Chris: Love Chris, love the song....didn't like the combination of the two. May just be that the best part of that song is Amy Lee, but I just think he could have picked much better if he was looking for something on the "softer" side. Oh, and to the person that said he'd be in trouble if they did a "Broadway" night, obviously you've never seen "Rent".

Kevin: Glad someone mentioned the Jim Neighbors thing, as I couldn't place who he reminded me of, and the closest I could come was Marvin the Martian. :teeth: Didn't do a horrible job, but I definitely think there are 5 or 6 guys that are considerably better than him.

Bucky: This one really surprised me. Wasn't a fan of his first performance, but he's gotten better every week, and last night was really good. Right now, I'd place him third in the pecking order, only behind Chris and Taylor.

Will: I think he could be really great, with the right song. Last night's choice wasn't it. Unfortunately, I think it may have been his last chance. Definitely belongs in the bottom 3 or 4, regardless.

Taylor: Taylor's my guy. LOVE the voice, LOVE the soul...heck, even LOVE the "dancing", as it reminds me of some legends of the past (Joe Cocker and Ray Charles come to mind). The guy has a guaranteed recording contract at this point, based just on his AI performances. "One Trick Pony" ? No more so than any other Idol contestant (or are you going to tell me that Will or Kevin could sing rock or blues? :rotfl: )

Elliot: As I said, I'm just not into the "Stevie Wonder" thing, and turning a Bryan Adams song into Stevie Wonder isn't going to impress me all that much. Assuming the spoilers for next week are correct, he'll do better then...and if I bother to watch for yet more Stevie Friggin' Wonder, I might even ackowledge as much.

Ace: :scared1: :scared: Yeah...um...No, dude. PLEASE go back to actual singing instead of that falsetto crap. 'Course, it does make it easier to make fun of you when the women are talking about how cute you are. :teeth: Still, you've got a decent voice...why not use it?

Top two: Taylor and (surprise!) Bucky
Bottom Two: Kevin and Gedeon

I thought Chris was great as per usual. I really am warming up to Taylor a lot more and he did a very good job last night. I was very surprised to find myself really enjoying Bucky though! I can't get Wave on Wave out of my head though. I had to laugh when he said that he was prettier than his brother. Um... Yeah. ;) I think I'm over Ace as well. He started strong but I think he slips more and more each week. I would like to see him in the top 12 though.

Predictions:
Kinnik and Melissa
Will and Kevin

Okay, they just did a replay on the radio and just from listening and not watching, I loved all of them but Will and Kevin. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed Bucky and Ace until hearing it without visuals. Ace does have that Constantine thing going on and it creeps me out a bit, but I think he sang well last night. And, I can't help but love Bucky - even if he isn't the most attractive thing out there. Looks don't really matter that much to me in this competition since I'm not usually looking at the artist while they are singing on my radio.

Oh, this may have been discussed but I notice a wedding band on Bucky. Is he married? They mention it a lot with Chris, but I can't recall Bucky ever saying anything about a wife.

I wondered the exact same thing.

Oh, BTW, I know I am off topic, but I am originally from the Livingston/Walker area, too. (Satsuma to be exact.) I graduated from Doyle High School! My brother is coaching there now! So I wanted to say HI!!!!!! :wave2:

My rundown from last night:

Gedeon - I just don't get him or his vibe.

Chris - I love the song he sang - not my favorite performance from him but he'll still get through to the final 12.

Kevin - he's out of his league - probably going home tonight.

Bucky - I don't like country but I like Bucky - don't know why but I do. I hope he makes it to the final 12.

Will - poor Will - DS(9) likes him because he's from Texas but I'm afraid he's going home tonight also.

Taylor - I still don't dig his vibe but the judges sure do like him.

Elliott - he's a good singer but ..............

Ace - I hate that falsetto singing - I haven't liked his song choices the last two weeks at all.

I did an experiment while voting last night. I waited 30 minutes then continually voted for one hour - I had 5 people' phone numbers in the phone and I rotated though all of them one at a time, over and over and when I got through on someone's line I marked it down, here's the results:

Called 30 times on each number:

25 votes for Will
21 votes for Bucky
11 votes for Ace
6 votes for Chris
0 votes for Taylor

Taylor sure has a lot of fans, couldn't get through on his line at all.

Going home tonight: Melissa, Kinnick, Will and Kevin/Gedeon

Small World! I'm actually in French Settlement with a Livingston address. I grew up in Ascension Parish. St. Amant High alumni here.

Oh, I just looked up Bucky's bio and it says single. I guess the ring is just a fashion statement.

Yes, he is. One of the local tv stations spoke to his wife one night. She was in the audience last week I believe.

I have a question on the families, are the staying out there the whole time with the contestants? Both of Kevin's parents have been there every week as well as some of the others. Just wondering how they manage to do that? Also the older contestants and married ones how they manage to continue to make a living and pay the bills? Anyone know?

I'm sorry, but if Kevin sticks around for the final 12, I'll know that America is cracked out. The only reason the judges are being nice is because he's cuter than apple pie. You can tell Simon is refraining because he knows if he laid into him like he does the other contestants, he'd be burned in effigy. Ya can't be mean to Chicken Little!

Like dturner said he is way out of his league.

Go Mandisa, Kellie, Katherine, Taylor, Chris and Bucky!

:teeth: Ace..... Mmmmmm, Ace. :cloud9:

Last night's performance was the first time I actually saw all the "Ace Buzz" I'd been hearing. He is yummy....

Im looking forward to watching Ace, Taylor - and of course Chris in the finals!

And personally - we need a Chris-type-guy to win. We've had ever other stereo type. :teeth:

Will: I’m no barber but, man, I want to take a pair of scissors to that mop on his head!

NOOOO! If (I mean when) Will makes it to the top 12, they are not touching his hair! I don't think he'd be as cute if they cut his hair!
