American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

Ok...let me give my 2 cents on the guys performances...

Taylor is my favorite of the guys....I actually liked his version of Easy...I would have liked him singing the Kenny Rogers Song "Lady" that was sung later tonight....but he can still sing and will be top 5..

Elliott didnt like it...dont like his voice or his looks....looks like something from Lord of the Rings...

Ace...I know alot of girls like him for his looks and that will get him far in this competition and thats a shame he is not that good a singer....for the record my wife doesnt think he is hot...LOL

Gedeon....I think he has a good voice and stage presence and he showed it tonight....I told my wife as he was singing he really has a nice voice....I am pulling for him to now....but I dont expect him to last much longer

Kevin....does not fit with the other guys and too me sounds like he is singing through his nose....I didnt like the Chicken Little Comparison and thought it was rude

Sway....he should have went last week and I thought should not made top 12

Will....ok nothing great

Bucky...actually liked his performance tonight, I liked it better than Garth's version and I saw his in concert....Being from South Carolina and having been to California I know how it feels not to be able to get sweet tea...."No we have Rasberry Tea"...who the hell drinks Rasberry Tea....Down home boy....I am just not a rocker type person....gets the good ole boy vote from me...LOL

David....his voice is not the style for this competition but fits great with the rat pack, Harry Connick group and will probably get a record deal for that reason and Genre...My wife says he is a cutie

Chris...WOW....great great great...My wife melts when she sees him and he helped me get lucky tonight....He has my vote now...LOL....She loves Vin Diesal and he resembles him....I call him Baby Diesal...LOL....great voice and will be top 5 with Taylor...

My top 5...Taylor, Chris, Lisa, Ayla, I love kellie but I will say Mandissa

who I think will be top 5....Ace, Kellie, Chris, Taylor, lisa

Well, tonight the guys can say they did better than the girls. But for me the best of the night were the first and last performances. Every one in the middle needs some work. But for a couple of those in the middle its time for them to go home.

taylor.jpg

TAYLOR HICKS

I don't care what anyone else thinks. I really liked Taylor tonight, and I didn't see anything wrong with his performance. He loves music, and he loves to perform and we see it every time he gets on stage. He is one that got my vote tonight, and it was hard to get in, so I'm sure he is safe for another week!

elliott.jpg

ELLIOT YAMIN

Reading some of the other post here. It looks like he has a strong fan base. That's great. But I am not one of them. Yes, I think he did a very good job tonight. But I am just not as impressed with him as the judges are and some who have posted here. He didn't get my vote, but I'm sure he will be back next week.

ace.jpg

ACE YOUNG

Now, I didn't have as much of a problem with his performance as some here and the judges did. When he started to sing I was wondering if he would be able to hit that one really high note...and he did. It took some work, but he did it. Though he did not get my vote, I'm sure he will be back next week.

gedeon.jpg

GEDEON McKINNEY

Yes, he also did a very good job this week. But he is another one who if he was to go, I wouldn't really miss him. Their is just something about his face, while he sings that bugs me. He is not one of the two who I think should go Thursday, but he didn't get my vote.

kevin.jpg

KEVIN COVAIS

What a cutie! But I think he is in over his head. He has a voice, but it needs some work. I think with a few years of voice lessons, we might just see him in the music store. But I really hope he doesn't make it to the final 6 guys. He is just not ready for it now.

jose.jpg

JOSE "SWAY" PENALA

UGH!! He was bad two weeks in a row! And this week was just as painful as last week. Just as soon as he opened his mouth, I could tell he didn't have what it takes to sing that song. I hope he is one of the two to go Thursday.

will.jpg

WILL MAKAR

Unlike the judges, I had no problem with Will tonight. I thought he did a wonderful job on the song, and even made it his own, in his own little way. You can tell he needs to work on his stage performance. And I'm sure, if given the chance that he will improve. Though he didn't get my vote, I hope he makes it to next weeks show.

bucky.jpg

BUCKY COVINGTON

For me this is two strong performances in a row from Bucky. I truly hope that he will have no problems and survives all the way to the final six guys. And it looks like some one got there hands on him, his beard has been saved. And they did some work on his hair. Can't wait to see what he does next week.

david.jpg

DAVID RADFORD

Another UGH, for me. I just don't see what others see in him. It is time for him to go.

chris.jpg

CHRIS DAUGHTRY

YES, YES, YES!!! What a great way to end the show tonight! If you ask me the AI title is Chris' to loose. I was sitting on the edge of my seat during the whole performance. I just can't wait until next week to see what he does!

WHO SHOULD GO HOME:
Jose "Sway" Penala
David Radford

MY FAVS OF THE NIGHT:
Taylor Hicks
Chris Daughtry

If you start dialing about 1/2 way through the last performance you can get through usually before the song is up and always before the judges are done critiquing. I was able to vote for Chris 20 times before Ryan even said the phone lines were open. Same with Mandisa last night. So dial early folks and lets keep Chris in this thing!

Absolutely, positively, without a doubt, Chris is the most talented and hardest working contestant in the competition this year. I haven't seen a lackluster performance from him since his initial audition. He's just that consistently good. It's all his to win or lose. I do love Mandisa but I don't really think she'll win. I'm not 100% certain Chris will take it but only because he's not a watered down pop kinda guy. No matter how long he stays, there are record companies lining up already and panting after the guy. He'll make it BIG. :woohoo:  :worship:

Overall, other than Chris's AMAZING performance, Gedeon was the only one who really wowed me. I got the hysterical giggles listening to Will because that song SO does NOT fit a teenage boy. I'm sure that's not the effect he was after :lmao:

I think Ayla is the hardest working....I just think Chris is gifted

Can you believe that our cable was on the blink last night???? Not sure if it was because of the wind up here, but we could not get ANY channels! Kept fading in and out - ARGH!!!! So I had to find a channel that only had the sound :( Surely not what I wanted but at least I got to HEAR the guys! Taylor is still my favorite but I wish he would pump it up a bit. Elliott has a great voice, but Chris OWNED that stage last night - wow!!!!

Hope the cable is working tonight..

I think Brenna & Heather will go for the girls and Sway and David for the boys. After this week it will be tougher, for me anyhow, to start picking folks to leave..

I’m torn! The guys I wanted to like so badly didn’t have the greatest of nights (except for one) while others I had pretty much written off were shining. Here’s my take on the top 10.

Taylor: He sang Easy by the Commodores, not a great choice for the way he presents music. A bit of a shaky start and a few pitch problem at the end didn’t help matters. While I don’t have a problem with his outbursts of HEY! And YA! during some songs, last night’s exclamations really started to bother me. He needs to stay in his folk/blues venue where there are certainly enough songs to get him through 10 seasons of American Idol. Attempting to croon ballades just doesn’t work for Taylor.
He got an 8 and now, this morning, I feel I was being kind.

Elliott: I didn’t catch the name of the song he sang but it was one I’ve heard before. The first thing I noticed was that he LOOKS better. The AI stylists are starting to work their magic. I hope they convince him to let his hair grow so he will lose that Amish look (nothing against the Amish). His control on that song had me sitting on my couch with my mouth hanging open, every note just when it should be and great presentation to boot. While it wasn’t popular with many fans last week, Elliott has done nothing to make me disagree with Simon’s review that he may be the best singer of the bunch.
For an outstanding vocal and improved appearance, Elliott gets the only 10 of the night!

Ace: He sang If I’m not Made for You or something like that, A forgettable song and performance. These contestants should understand that the older population is more likely to vote for them if they have heard the music. I’m 50+ and I vote!!! I also think AI should outlaw falsetto performances. The Bee Gees did it best, everyone else is an embarrassment. I found him pitchy and shrill in spots and he looked nervous. Oh, and did he have on the same outfit as last week?? I expected better from him.
Ace didn’t ace this performance. He gets a 5.

Gedeon: His song was Change Is going To Come. As Paula would say, I loved it, loved it, loved it. Who is this guy?? After a bit of a shaky start, he just got stronger and stronger. For a soulful, moving performance and great stage presence, he gets a 9.

Kevin: He chose Heard It Through The Grapevine. Well it was fun but that was about it. I’ve felt Kevin does have a really good voice but this performance just didn’t do it for me. Actually I felt a bit embarrassed for him. It was a poor choice for this stage of the competition unless they had made this a comedy night. He gets a 6.

Sway: He sang Overjoyed (?). Sway continues to have pitch problems. While he did look the part of headliner, his use of the stage seemed stiff and mechanical last night. I think he was a bit over his head trying this Stevie Wonder classic.
He gets a 6.

Will: His choice was Lady and for the first time I totally disagreed with all three judges. I love that song and I love the way he sang it. What an amazing voice! He made just enough changes to it so that it didn’t sound like karaoke night at some club. His presentation was comfortable and seductive. My thought from last night was 3 letters: WOW!
Will gets a 9.

Bucky: He performed a Garth Brooks song which, at the beginning, was fantastic. Whether his voice gets tired or he just feels some screaming will help his performance, I don’t know but things started to go down hill in pretty quick order. While much better than last week, he still needs work.
He got a 7.

David: He sang The Way You Look Tonight. Nope, I was totally bored. If he had broken out of his zone last night and done something catchy, I’d feel he might be here next week. But that song was awful and his singing was pretty bad.
He gets a 5.

Chris: I must have traveled to an alternate universe during Chris’ performance because I am in total disagreement with everyone including the judges and my husband. I thought it was dreadful. Once again, a song I never heard so I don’t know if he sang it right or wrong. For me though, that song was just horrible. Chris had lots of energy but unfortunately, all it did was create annoying noise. All that potential lost in a piece of music that was like a bad joke.
With the lowest score of the night because of his terrible song choice, he gets a 4.

Who I voted for from the most to the least:
Elliott
Gedeon
Will
Taylor

Who I think will be going home tonight:
David, Sway and/or Kevin.

Oh, and the Simonism of the night. When Will was told to relax and he took his shirt out of his pants, Simon advised him to “Get off the stage quickly” because of Ryan. That had me :rotfl: !

As always, JMHO.

I have to say that if I saw him on the streets I wouldn't look twice at him, but he is one hot hunk of guy up there on stage!!!!!

BTW - what is the # for AI - I want to vote but don't have it commited to memory yet. :( I know he is #10.

I have to admit if I saw Chris on any of my streets I would strain my neck turning and looking. I soooo love that look. My husband has the same look...sooo hot and sexy. And I love his comittment to his family!

Are you telling me that BO was there and I missed it??? I started recording the show after it had been on for about 7 or 8 minutes. I suppose they showed him right at the beginning. ARGGGG! So when did they show him?

Tacky that they didn't say hi to him.

It's funny you say that. Last week, Chris performed a Bon Jovi song, which is my favorite band, so right away, he's my pick. Last night, he did a song by a band named Fuel - A song which I really like. I thought he was AWFUL! I thought the same thing - He had lots of energy and his stage prescence was good, but he sounded terrible. Not sure what the judges were drinking last night.

Ace was terrible last night. Terrible song, terrible sounding.

Kevin - I can't even stand to watch him. I always think he sounds terrible.

Will - Didn't like him or his song choice last night.

David - Song was boring but what was worse was his stone faced reaction to the judges. Came off like a jerk last night.

I just can't say that I'm impressed with any of the guys this year. One week they're ok, the next week they stink.

I love Chris!!! He was so good last night. I voted for him at least 6 times. I also like Elliot. I really think one of the guys will win the title this year. I really felt bad for Sway. I thought he sounded pretty good. I hope he does not leave tonight. The two I want to leave are, Will and David.

I just have to add this. You are so wrong about Chris. He is soooo good. I am hoping he wins it all.

It's really funny how we all watched the same show and heard the same songs, but we have so many different takes on what we heard. I actually try NOT to watch when they are singing, just listen so I don't get distracted by looks....good, hot or not.

Well, thank you for pointing that out to me. And all this time, I thought I had a right to my own opinion. :scratchin

In all seriousness, I like Chris too. I just think he sounded crappy last night. He screamed through the song. I thought it was a singing competition.

Kevin, Sway, Will, Ace, and David were all as Simon would say 'forgetable' last night. Ace has the looks but I am not sure he has the voice to really carry this competition. Kevin while cute in a 8 yr old kind of way needs to go home. Sway, I can't say anything but :scared: . David, he has a nice tone to his voice but his style of music just doesn't work for this type of competition but then again anyone remember the redheaded kid from a couple of years ago???

Elliot, He has a very nice voice as long as I don't look at him. I know that is bad to say but :confused3

They showed Bo (and even had his name on the screen) when Taylor finished his song - Bo was in the front row standing and clapping

YES! I caught it on TIVO. He looks great. Wish it was him singing tonight instead of Carrie. ::yes::

Rumor has it that Bo IS singing on 3/9!!! :thumbsup2 Way cool. :teeth:

Weird! Here I thought He was the one who finally brought IT! Buckey was 2nd. I was surprised at Taylor, Ace and Elliot. But Chris...the best of the night. That's Probably why his was the first to be busy.

Chris absolutely blows the girls and guys out of the water imho with Taylor running close behind him. Wow - my DH and I were so impressed by him last night! Anyway, I think as cute as Kevin may be that it's time for him to go home...he has a sweet voice but really, not AI material yet. It's almost mean to keep him around just to pinch his cheeks and I feel like they practically told him that's why he was there last night with the Chicken Little thing. I wouldn't miss David, Sway,Kevin, or Will at this point.

And, I'm SHOCKED to admit this, but I'm trading Ace in for Bucky. Ace just doesn't perform well and he looks so nervous all the time...I feel like he should have given a solid performance by now. I'm sad about it, though.
