American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

I like to think of Taylor as a diamond in the rough. With a little polishing, I think he will shine quite well.

To those that think Kat got a bum steer with Meatloaf - Taylor didn't fare much better with Toni Braxton. What was that woman on? :rotfl2: Best part of the performance, when Toni took Taylor's hand, put it on her.. ummm... lets just say below the belt and backed up into him to ummmm..familyboardfamilyboardfamilyboard......dirty dance? Taylor not only backed away but took his hand and wiped it off on his pants as if to say "Oh.. GROSS woman! I'm just here to sing!" He had a handful last night! :lmao:

And Clay - he looked like a Beatle last night!

Enough of who was better than who! Taylor won, Kat came in second! Everybody has their own choice of who they like and it shouldn't matter if not everyone agrees with them!

It's over, let's move on to Season 6! :)

I don't think it's sour grapes, I think it is actual amazement. I wish I could properly express how I feel without sounding like I'm just mad Elliot didn't win.

I just don't get Taylor. There are lots of singers I don't like, but I get why people like them. I don't like Bono or Elvis Costello, for example, just don't care for them, but it's not like I can't see what others see in them.

I'm just really in the dark about Taylor. He seems like a really nice guy and not untalented. He just doesn't seem like the kind of personality to make people go wild, or have the kind of voice that stands out.

I know, I know, you disagree with me, I get that. I just can't see it and it's not sour grapes.

That expresses my feelings about Taylor too. :confused3

As for the performers growing and changing throughout the show and beyond, that's one of the things I really enjoy about AI.

IMO Clay is the poster child for starting out raw and undergoing a major change once the AI stylists got hold of him. Looks like he's still morphing.

I think Clay is oozing talent but it seems like I'm seeing more and more comments about him treating fans badly.
Right or wrong I think a contestant who started out as just a regular guy or gal and made it big on AI is going to be held to a bit different standard when it comes to being diva-like than other performers.

I think Elliott changed quite a bit over the course of the show as well. I'd love to see him get a little dental work done, I think he would look like a new person. I'll be watching for him in the future.

I'm not really a fan of Kat or Taylor but I thought Kat was far stronger vocally than Taylor was last night.

Chiming in this morning, because I was too pooped last night after that extravaganza! Wooooooooooooooooooooo TAYLOR! :cool1: Not a huge surprise but a happy ending as most of us expected. He turned that turd of a coronation song into something tolerable too.

My thoughts on the evening:

1. Those fake AI awards were a total waste of time. Cheesy, embarassing and quite mean. Guys, we are laughing AT you not WITH you. Yuck. A big turn off. :sad2:

2. That being said, how hard did I laugh when Crazy Dave ran out and fell off the stage :lmao: !!

3. Kat's performance with Meatloaf was possibly the worst performance ever, and I'm not just speaking of AI here. The man is completely tone deaf, the song was in the wrong key altogether (DH loves "the Loaf" but could not remember the song when they sang. It was only when I sang it to him in the correct register/key, that he said OOHHHHHHHHHHHHhhh...I used to like that song. Keep in mind that I myself am tonedeaf). Take my opinion with a grain of salt because I HATE Meatloaf (the singer and the food). :teeth:

4. Chris rocked the mic with Live last night, though it was painfully obvious that Live's lead singer did NOT enjoy sharing the spotlight and was totally trying to drown out Chris. Live's lead singer...not so good. Chris...

5. Prince was the performance highlight of the evening as he is ANYTIME he's on a stage. Cool, smooth and flawless...and the way he just turned his back on Seacrest and sauntered off stage at the end...priceless! :smooth:

6. The Bacharach medley was a bit over the top. We aren't in Vegas right? But at least the Idols were having fun! Covais was hy-freaking-sterical with "What's new Pussycat". Did anyone else notice the oddly time hand gesture he made across his crotch as he was singing. If you have it on Tivo, watch the beginning of the performance and see how that gesture syncs up with the lyrics. Covais, you BAD BAD BOY ;)

7. I LOVED the all guys/girls performances. The guys especially just melted me ito a puddle of goo :lovestruc

8. Because of the sheer number of STUFF they crammed into this show, it ran long and my TIVO came within 45 seconds of cutting off the victory announcement. My heart was actually pounding as I perched on the edge of my chair in terror that we would miss it. Producers gotta time their stuff better next time.

9. Finally and perhaps most importantly was the Clay issue. When the other guy came out to get his award and they asked him to sing, I assumed they would cut his mic and cue Aiken (perhaps offstage) to sing so it would look like the kid had a decent voice. When the kid started singing I got really worried that they were going to let him continue the whole song. THEN the doors behind him slid open and there he was...I think :confused3 . I turned to DH adn said "What's Harry Potter doing there?". Then he emerged from the backlight and I choked on my own words. "oh...My...GOD. It's CLAY......what in the HE** did he do to his HAIR????" Then we had to pause the Tivo for a good minute or so while we :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao: . If he didn't officially come out yet, he totally did with that new look. Also, is it just my imagination or did he pack on some weight? That part looked good.

All in all, the show did exactly what it intended to. It entertained the heck out of me. I laughed so hard for those two hours that my sides hurt this morning. I'm thrilled for Taylor and I send him my warmest congrats. See you guys in August at the concert!!

I didn't say that you couldn't talk about it! I just don't like either contestant being put down when it's not neccesary. ;)

My DD and DH never watched the show -- want to know who they thought should have won? (were amazed she didn't, actually) -- Mandisa! They thought it was clear she had the best voice.

That is just Ed's style. And I don't think that he was trying to drown him out. I think that he looked like he was having fun with Chris. And Chris was in his element. I wasn't crazy about how high the lead singer was going, but I guess they were trying to do different parts and not sound the same. After all, he is the lead singer of that group, and not Chris. Chris will have his own chance when the time comes! ;)

O my gosh! I noticed that too! Both Kat and Taylor looked a little bit "grossed out" by their partners. Somebody else said that Kat looked "aloof" when singing with Meatloaf. Well...who can blame her? I wouldn't want that sweaty man anywhere near me! Ew. And Taylor...the look his face when Toni Braxton backed up into him...priceless!

I also agree with the person who said that Kevin singing the pussycat song was wrong on so many levels. Those are the exact words I said to DH when he started singing. Then we proceeded to crack up through the entire song...especially when we saw the girls doing the oompa loompa dance in the background. :teeth:

i was thinking the same thing! i thought to myself, how did she NOT make it through? she has a beautiful voice, beautiful smile and is very entertaining. I think they missed the boat on her. can they try again once they have made it that far?

I've been watching AI during the last 3 seasons from the very beginning. I (and just an opinion) think that there are several talented singers that were in the top 12. I'd have to say maybe 10 or 11 are very talented. I always liked Mandisa too. She is a beautiful person and has an amazing voice.

I just know that when you have a favorite from the begining, you want them to do well and get at far as they can. You become attached to them and hope that they do well! :)

i admit,i haven't been wild about clay since seeing him film the christmas parade on main street. He wasn't exactly nice to the people who had waited hours to see him. he barely acknowledged anyone but himself that day.
:goodvibes

I agree about the chalkiness vs. the darker hair... but if I recall, Clay had pneumonia when he taped the parade :( In fact he had to cancel a few of his concerts that immediately followed the taping... It was cold in the MK that day, and they were trying to keep him out in the cold for as little time as possible.... I think that's what happened that day anyhow :confused3

I didn't mean anything bad about the deadbeat comment but what I meant to inply was he did not have a regular 9 to 5 job and play music on the side as a hobby. He has already cut two cd's and was waiting for his big break. Yes he was able to do this with the support of his family but he was also sleeping on family members couches because he couldn't aford a place of his own. I am very happy for Taylor he has made his big break and will do well and he will remember those that helped him along the way.

Is this what Bo said in the interview?? :confused3
I'm confused, because I have read (and in fact even saw on AI last year) that Bo worked in a music store, something with guitars. Also, he had his own home where he lived with his (then girlfriend, now wife). They even showed his house during his background video last year on AI.
I wonder if I can find that interview anywhere, I'd be interested to read it.

Ooops!
So funny, I just went back and read the other posts AFTER this one that I quoted, and sure enough, someone already posted the same exact thing! My bad!

The only thing that stopped Mandisa was BAD SONG CHOICE... one week was a religious song & the next week, I forget what it was, but it was just BAD... When they keep picking bad songs, there's only so far they are going to go... I really thought she would get to the top 4 at least... but those song choices just killed her I think...

Hmmm..."Ed" may be the lead singer, but last night WAS about the IDOLS's, not the guest performers. I could barely hear Chris over the "Ed". It WAS Chris's "chance" In my opinion. All of the other stars (including Toni Braxton and Mary J) should have been BACKUP to the Idol's performance.

Note to "ED" and also Ace...if you want to see how a good falsetto is done and DONE RIGHT, go re-watch the Prince performance.

Okay, I am really surprised that no one picked up on this. Either that or I am losing my mind and imagining things! Some of you said you thought Elton was going to come out during that "Clay wannabe" number...

That was the point!

The whole number was a recreation of the George Michaels/ Elton John video of that song. During the video George starts off singing the song, then halfway through you see a man emerging from the back platform, completely back lit, and George says "Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Elton John!" Elton comes out on stage and joins him and they finish the song together. He is dressed in a black suit with his hair shaggy, exactly as Clay was! Only thing Clay was missing were Elton's ever-present glasses. ::yes::

The deadbeat comment was about Taylor, not Bo.

I really liked the show, even though I'm still trying to get Braxton's "In the Ghetto" solos out of my head. ;) What was that? I loved the segment with the "Clay twins", not sure about the hair. I was very surprised to see Prince doing AI and "Do I make you proud" is starting to grow on me and finally I think the segment between Kat and Meatloaf could have worked, if only Meatloaf could carry a tune. :rolleyes1

I thought the Meatloaf Kat duet was so good that he should tour with her. I forgot how much I love him!!
