American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

I've downloaded a couple of Taylor's songs and I do like them a lot and they're in rotation on my iPod.

But...I do agree with Bicker that Taylor's choice of "Something" was a cheap shot. Despite what anyone says, the point of this show was to showcase something old and something new. Taylor took the easy way out...and personally, I thought his take on the Beatles song was one of his worst yet. His "Play That Funky Music" was fun and definitely enjoyable, but this second song to me was a cop-out despite the fact that it was within the "rules."

Yea, and I wasn't intending to disagree with the argument that perhaps that song choice shouldn't have been allowed. It was the argument that the only thing he can deliver is own take on stuff other people already made famous. That's just not the case - I thought it was worth going to bat on that one. Otherwise....like him or leave him. Doesn't matter to me. I'll never argue with another's taste in music.

I wasn't really blown away by anyone tonight other than Chris with his first song. I usually love Katherine, but tonight wasn't anything special from her, IMO.

I think everyone has "their" week when the producers mandate it. Paris did excellent with Mary J. Blige's song. Not my type of music, but I thought she did well.

IMHO, the only one who did outstanding with today's TOP music were Katharine and Paris. Katharine's version of KT Tunstall's song was BETTER than the original (my sympathies to KT) - hope the people who recognize the song realize that. I liked Chris a lot, but agreed with the judges that his voice was shot -- at least he admitted it. His second song, despite his voice strain, was GOOD.

Y'know what? I'd buy any albums by Chris, Katharine or Taylor. I like all three equally, but I voted for Katharine tonight because her verion of "Black Horse & a Cherry Tree" was better than the original -- which I've listened to a dzn times since Kat sang it tonight.

I like Taylor when he's doing his OWN thing -- not covering.

I'm not supposed to vote. But I said exactly that to my buds at work. Her version was BETTER than the original. They had no idea about the original.... so they had to just agree! :rotfl:

Chris - Don't know this song at all...not my type of music. He didn't change my opinion about this type of music. He was just kinda boring to me and didn't hold my attention. In the beginning rounds, he was exciting, but he was just blah. I guess I disagree with all of the judges (and probably most of you here). Oh well...

I agree....I like Chris and think he is gonna be in the top 2....but I didnt care for him tonight

Kat's my gal, but that was pretty bad...But as one of the few guys here, I'll ogle her while you ladies swoon over Chris.

I am with you dog.....I loved Kellie but Kat is hot and can sing too....WOW

You know, he may not have the best voice in the competition, but it just doens't get any more damned entertaining than that! I loved it. You go white boy! :dancer:

I think he has a great voice but his moves get in the way...but he is fun....I hope he wins

Chris......wouldn't all that screaming be bad for his vocal cords? :confused3:

I said the same thing quit screaming dude....I asked my wife you cant possibly think he has the best voice in this competition....she fessed up no Kat does....I said nope Taylor then Simon kinda backed me up

Personally, I think that's one of the best songs I've heard Katherine sing this whole season! :)

Dont know if I like the song or not.....Loved the beat of it and I loved Kat on her knees WOW THAT WAS SEXY...can I say that???? WELL SHE WAS

Loved both of Taylor's songs tonight. I finally feel like the old Taylor is back :thumbsup2

I also really enjoyed Kat's second performance.

I'm surprised at the current DialIdol predictions - makes me wonder if a certain someone has this contest already wrapped up...

Checking in late again.

My list for tonight:

Elliot: 1. Don't like the song (and hasn't it been done EVERY year so far?) but his version was ok. But that Simon says, it is a forgettable performance, I don't remember what I liked about it.
2. Nice voice, boring song, cute that he went over to Ryan...THAT I remember.

Paris: 1. Singing Prince, (she did say she was singing Prince's Kiss, NOT Tom Jones Kiss). never liked the song so it was just so-so for me. Something in her voice annoys me.
2. Mary J. again not a favorite of mine at all, getting bleeped for saying a naughty word? Didn't like all the yeah's and stuff she has to add to almost everything she sings.

Chris: 1. Renegade by Styx, one of my favorite bands from way back when, loved how he sang it. WTG Chris!
2. Never heard this one before, got way too screamy for me again.

Katharine: 1. Started out way off and never got back on track. She knew she was bad.
2. Wow! I have not heard that song before even though my daughter informs me it is played on CMT all the time. All I can say if Wow..she redeemed herslef big time.

Taylor: 1. This was so much fun to watch and I wanted to get up and dance along with him. THIS is the Taylor I like. DD 16 enjoyed it too.
2. I liked this one too, although I love the original way better. I also like that Randy said they need to do a Beatles night...that would be heaven!

Going home? Either Paris or Elliot. I am leaning towards Paris.

And yes I would buy an album from Kat, Taylor or Chris, I will be buying the CD that is coming out soon.

AND for dolpindan1: Mrs. Yamen said in an interview that her son was "almost" handsome now.

Another AND: on MSNBC tonight after Idol they were reporting that Taylor had been arested way back when for drugs (pot). Anyone else hear this anywhere else?

Well, it looks like we all disagree about tonight's performances. But I thought all-in-all it was a pretty good night.

Elliott- For me both of Elliott song were not that great, and they were kind of boring. And I will have to greatly disagree with the person who says that Elliott sounds like Michael Buble - NOT! Elliott does not have the emotion that Michael has in his voice, especially while singing that song. He did neither of his songs justice. And I am sad to say that I would have rather heard Scott Salvos (from last season) version of that song, then hear Elliott sing that again.

Paris - Tonight just showed that while she does have a voice, she still needs to learn to use it. While listening to her sing "Kiss" all I could think of was of Julia Roberts signing it in a bubble bath in "Pretty Woman." And I will have to say I liked Julia's version more. And I don't think that she was beeped. I think Fox was having technical difficulties tonight. Because just as the show started, the sound went out as well. (I have comcast as well.) I just don't see them letting her go on stage signing a song with a word they have to beep out.

Chris - One of the best of the night! Loved both of his songs. And I am hoping that I will be able to find them online to down load, so I can listen to them over and over. Even with his strained voice, he showed the two previous performers how it should be done.

Katharine - Yes, that first song was really bad. And it was good that even she knew it. But she came out with both guns blazing for her second one. I had never heard the song before. But what little I have listen to tonight from online; I will have to agree with those who think she did a better job than the original. I just hope she will be able to pull this type of performance off for both songs next week.

Taylor - For me Taylor did no wrong tonight. I thought both songs were WONDERFUL. Flawless. It was great to see him go into the crowd and dance around. And the second song was just beautiful. While no one could ever do a Beatles song as good as the Beatles, I thank Taylor was able to make the song his own tonight. I gladly gave him my votes tonight. That was when I was able to get through.

I only voted for Kat, Chris and Taylor. (Voting on both my land and cell phones.) I was able to get in for Kat-33 times (only 2 of those on my cell), Chris - 28 times (again only one of those on my cell) and Taylor - 13 times (couldn't get in for him on my cell at all.)

I think it will be between Elliott and Paris - with Paris going home.

I read on TWOP, there was a link to a Star (yes, the tabloid) article of either this week or last week that he had a pot bust years ago. I don't read star, so I don't know how credible that information truly is. I checked on TSG (the smoking gun.com) and they usually have arrest reports, mug shots and such on celebrities. I didn't see anything on TSG.

Again, it is the Star so take it for what it is worth.

No, not the meaning in that Stephen King book but AI this year is a rolling repeat more or less. Each week the remaining 5 are giving me the same performance with a different melody. The exceptions have been few and far between.

I’ll continue to watch but it has dawned on me that I really don’t care who wins as they are all pretty much equal at this stage. The top 5 this year don’t hold a candle to the top 3 of last year.

Elliott: 1. On Broadway. Pitchy and shaky. 7
2. ? Song. Just not great vocally or emotionally. 6
Total: 13

Paris: 1. ? Song. Interesting performance and fairly different for her. 8
2. ? Song. Dreadful song with a fair presentation. 7
Total: 15

Chris: 1. Renegade. Left me wanting to open a vein but I actually enjoyed his performance. 9
2. I Dare You (?). I'm just tired of his screaming and this was the worst. Maybe not really a 3 but he lost points because I hit the mute button.
Total: 12

Katharine: 1. Against All Odds. All over the road pitch wise and who the heck dresses her?? Once again, no emotion. 7
2. Black Horse and a Cherry Tree? Katharine must have a twin because it was the best song of the night and the best performance. Where did this come from? 10
Total: 17

Taylor: 1. Play That Funky Music. Fun bordering on burlesque. Vocals were OK but didn’t really capture the feeling of that song. 9
2. Something. Mediocre performance that just didn’t do it for me but the vocals were above what most of the others gave us. 8
Total: 17

Who I voted for: Absolutely no one.

My Top 5 Rating a/o 5/2:

Taylor
Paris
Katharine
Chris
Elliott

Who I want to go home:

Elliott. He had been one of my favorites but the weeks are rolling by and it’s the same thing over and over.
Chris: He really was never one of my favorites. I’m tired of the angry man performances and the screaming.

Who I Think Will Go Home:

Elliott
Paris, which is too bad because, from week to week, she always performs her heart out.

As always, JMHO.

Really? I thought this season has been the best since season 2 with Ruben and Clay. I really don't care who wins either. I think they will all do well. :woohoo:
