American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

Stone Cold Crazy is definitely the right song for Chris. Metallica did an awesome job covering that song and I think Chris could do a great job too! :thumbsup2

I heard for country that Chris is singing Keith Urban. Just a rumor, although I heard from a VERY RELIABLE source- the American Idol message boards. :lmao:

IF he doesn't copy Metallica then it could be an interesting performance if he does this song. He has this tendency to copy other performers though so maybe he should do something that's never been covered by another rock artist?

I'm with Planogirl.
I'd really like Chris to find a song and come up with his own version instead of hearing him copy someone else's cover of the original.
Sorry Chris fans.

I know there's a lot of buzz about Queen night - but I think country will be interesting too.
Although somehow I see Simon being even more critical than usual tomorrow night.

And my prediction of how they'll go down (from first voted off to winner)
9. Ace
8. Bucky
7. Kellie
6. Elliot
5. Katherine
4. Taylor
3. Mandisa
2. Paris
1. Chris

I honestly don't have a clear-cut favorite right now. It changes from week to week for me.
I just hope you're wrong about Paris. I know she's got a voice - but I have never really connected with her.

Why just Chris? :confused3 Why not all of them? None of them arrange their own music. They either use an arrangement that someone else did before or someone on the show arranges it.

My take on the Chris thing -

I know that other people on the show try to do a carbon copy of the original but I like to see people try to add their own.. *umph* to the song. With Chris, he's putting a spin on the original, but by copying another artist that put THEIR own spin on the song.

Now I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with that - you will see by my favorites list below that I like Chris. I just don't want to see him get any praise for changing things up when he really isn't - he's just a really clever showman and knows how to find a way to cover a genre he would struggle with - by finding someone else that did the work for him. If he does that again on Queen night, working off another bands cover of a Queen song - he will drop further in my list.

So, that being said ;) Here are my picks from favorite on down:

1) Taylor
2) Chris
3) Elliott
4) Mandisa
5) Katharine
6) Bucky
7) Ace
8) Paris
9) Kellie

I thought I'd add my favorites list and reasons behind them as well:

Favorites:

1. Bucky
2. Taylor
3. Chris
4. Katharine
5. Mandisa

Bucky - is currently my favorite, not for his vocals - which I don't think are bad, but because he is genuinely entertaining. I really look forward to his performance each week.

Taylor - is awesome. He is better than Bucky vocally, but he knows he has talent and doesn't seem to be as surprised each week that people like him.

Chris - he is great in his genre. I don't need for him to go outside of his genre since he isn't going to put out a "light and easy" cd, he is going to put out a rock cd.

Katharine - She has a great voice and is a beautiful girl. She needs to work on her stage presence since she does seem a bit above the crowd when performing.

Mandisa - I love her voice when she isn't screaming at me. Unfortunately, she tends to be screaming every week and I think it's going to end up costing her.

Don't like:

6. Elliott
7. Ace
8. Kellie
9. Paris

I really dislike Ace, Kellie and Paris and wouldn't mind if any of those three went home for the next three weeks.

Elliott - too R&B for my taste. His music style does nothing for me even thought technically his voice is fine.

Ace - too Constantine. He tries to work his "good looks" too much during his performance. I haven't found him attractive since week two. He looks way to afraid and his hands shake like he needs rehab when performing.

Kellie - too ignorant. As I said before, I don't idolize ignorance so whether or not it's an act is irrelevant. Either attempt to speak intelligently, or don't speak at all.

Paris - too annoying. The whole "It do" thing and when she sang her answers to Ryan turned me off but I was never a fan to begin with. I think it's her age. I just can't relate to her and have never really enjoyed any of her performances.

Well since everyone is making their list of favorites, I'll also list how I think it should go:

1. Taylor
2. Chris
3. Katharine
4. Mandisa
5. Paris
6. Elliot
7. Kellie
8. Ace
9. Bucky

I don't think that Kellie, Ace and Bucky are at the same level as the rest of them, so they should be the next 3 to go. Although Kellie gets a lot of votes from the south, Ace gets the "hot" vote, and Bucky, well I don't know about him but people seem to like him as well. So it will be interesting to see who the next person is to leave. I really don't think it will be Bucky since this week is country, and that is his genre. Same thing with Kellie, plus she's never been in the bottom 3. So I think it will either be Ace, or someone shocking (since we haven't had one of those this year yet). I would say either Katharine (since she was already in the bottom 3) or Mandisa (since I can't see how she can really fit her voice to country).

Bucky expected to show softer side tonight

It’s ladies night for Bucky Covington fans.

The 28-year-old Rockingham “American Idol” star is expected to do a ballad during tonight’s country music-themed “American Idol” elimination round.

“I think he’s gonna slow it down a bit,” twin brother Rocky said Monday evening. “He’s singing it great.”

“I feel good about it,” Bucky said in a phone interview late Monday from Hollywood, though he added he wasn’t “too positive that I should have slowed it down, but that’s what a lot of the fans have been asking for.”

Bucky had a lot of good country songs to choose from, Rocky said, and decided to showcase his vocals with his selection.

“That’s what he’s kinda going after here,” Rocky said, adding song choice is crucial at this point in the talent show. “It’s a tricky call on any song you want to do now.

“What are the judges going to say? Is it going to backfire with the fans? Are people going to want a dance thing? Are people getting tired of the mike toss? It’s a tough decision.”

Bucky agreed.

“A lot more is expected of you the further along you get in ‘Idol,’” he said. “You have to keep changing things up and getting better every week.”

One thing will remain the same for Bucky: his new outlaw country look, which he debuted to rave reviews on last week’s “Idol.”

“I think he is going to stick with the hat ... for country week, definitely,” Rocky said.

Given the country theme, fans and critics alike are expecting much from Bucky — the lone male country vocalist on the show. But Bucky’s up to the task, his brother said.

“He always works better under pressure. If you ask me, I thought his best performance so far was during Stevie Wonder week,” Rocky said. Bucky sang Wonder’s “Superstition” on that show.

“If everybody’s expecting him to blow it out on country week, it might be kinda tough to shock ’em. But he’ll be all right.

“He’s ready.”

Father Gene Covington agreed.

“I talked to Bucky (Sunday) morning,” Gene said. “He feels real comfortable about the country theme. He’s excited about it.

“I think he’s gotta good song picked out. I’m looking forward to it.”

Bucky, who was reached briefly between rehearsals, said he’s “having a ball and loving every minute of it,” though he admits the pace gets more hectic each week. In the last week, he’s met Rascal Flatts, spent time with Kenny Rogers and sang with Queen.

“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate everyone in Richmond County and the nation giving me this opportunity,” he said. “Maybe some day I’ll be able to say ‘thank you’ enough. I just hope we can keep this thing going.”

Bucky Bash

Rocky’s band, Caddy Wampus, will get Bucky fans in the mood for “Idol” tonight during “Bucky Bash” at Rockingham’s Cole Plaza.

“I had a ball out there last week, and people were real respectful and quiet during the show,” Rocky said. “It was cool. Tonight should be off the hook!”

Caddy Wampus, which features Rocky, Eric Whitfield, Sammy Glidewell, Scooter Still and Jimbo Bullard, will play from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Steve Airy is providing sound and lights at no charge.

At 8 p.m., “Idol” will be shown on the big screen, courtesy of Rockingham, Rockingham Downtown Corp. and Time Warner Cable.

Bucky Bash will include several non-profit food vendors, including the Richmond County Band Boosters Association (hot dogs and hamburgers), L.J. Bell School (popcorn and candy) and the Richmond County Humane Society (barbecue sandwiches).

BSTees will be selling its “Vote for Bucky” T-shirts and “Sweet Tea & Biscuits” T-shirts. Three dollars from each shirt sold goes to the Covington family to help defray the costs of Bucky’s extended stay in Hollywood.

Terra Covington, Bucky’s sister-in-law, will be selling Bucky window decals. Rock 92.3 FM’s Deidre and Goatboy will be there tonight, as well as Big Waves WLWL 770 AM.

“Come on out, bring your lawn chairs and cell phones and get ready for a fun time,” organizer Kim Williams said. “And vote for Bucky, of course!”

How cool that Rocky's got his own band too. :smooth:
I'd love to go to the "Bucky Bash"! It sounds like it's going to be a great time.

Did you know that Rocky also tried out for AI.....................

Wish I lived closer to Rockingham - I'd go for sure - sounds like a lot of fun!!

I always assumed that the contestants in the top 12 got paid something while in L.A. Do they get anything? Can you imagine what a hardship it must be for the adults who have mortgages and other monthly bills? On one hand, I think that they are persuing a dream and no one is making them do it, but on the other hand, if it were my husband, I would definitely push him to do it even if it did mean losing one salary for almost half a year.

I'm not sure either when or if they get paid - I know they collect a paycheck while on tour.

I read where a woman was driving through Rockingham and stopped at Bucky' Dad' shop and gave the receptionist CASH saying she knew it was expensive to keep traveling to Hollywood to see Bucky - how nice is that??!!

Some spoilers here if you want them. (from mjsbigblog)

Or, a Kenny Rogers song. thanks to a from hh

Spoiler Update:

Ace Young: According to "Youngblood" from aceyoung.net, Ace is 5th tonight and singing a Keith Urban song.

ETA:

Kellie Pickler: According to several sources, Kellie will be singing "Fancy" by Reba McIntyre.

Sidenote: Thanks CL for the link to this article. Kellie is flying in her own "Fancy" hair stylist for tonight's show. From the article,

"Carmen Cutrona, one of the Q.C.'s most sought-after hair designers, left this morning to help Pickler, his most famous celebrity client, a representative for Cutrona confirmed. Cutrona -- who charges $300 for a consultation, cut and styling -- is the owner of Carmen! Carmen! Salon é Spas. Pickler, who lives in Albemarle, has been a client of Cutrona's for a few years, the hair designer's rep says."

Whoa, $300 bucks and she never et no spinich salad! Hee. Actually, I think Kellie's hair always looks good...

I love the spoiler on Kellie and the song she may sing. That song gets a lot of heat but I've always thought it was a great piece of music. I must confess that I like the Bobbi Gentry version much more than the Reba one.

I'm still not a big Kellie fan but, if she has another week like her Walkin after Midnight performance, I may become one.

ACK! I've got to stop doing this. Last week I made the mistake of listening to the Australian Idol contestant Anthony Callea just before the show came on. Then I watched AI and everyone sounded like rank amateurs after hearing him.

I just did it again a few minutes ago. Hearing real talent spoils you. Man oh man, I wish they'd get him to do a guest appearance on AI.

A John Denver song! I'm really surprised. (LOVE John Denver.) GO TAYLOR!!!! :goodvibes

Edited to add...

And yet...It really wasn't very good. :sad2:
