American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

Nancy, I loved the idea of Chris doing "Shameless"! Then I remembered that Billy Joel wrote it (didn't he have a version of it too before giving it to Garth?). Anyone think that would hurt him doing another song where a "rocker" did a different version of it? Just curious as I love the idea...

Shakira does Shaka laka doesn't she? If she does I love that song.

She has had some big hits...and man can she move those hips!

Who was singing with her though? I have no clue who it was.

Oh, now I feel stupid, I don't know that song. Unless you mean Ciega Sordomuda? It kind of sounds like she is saying that. I don't know. I'm no expert. I bought a couple of her albums 6 or 7 years ago when she only sang in Spanish because I really love Latin music. In fact, there are quite a few interesting artists from Columbia. I haven't been quite as interested in her English albums, but I still think she's cool.

Sorry, back to AI, that Bucky has to go! (Sorry! Kidding! ;) )

ITA that Martina McBride would be great for Katharine...maybe Independance Day? I heard Tim McGraw's Live Like You Were Dying & thought that might be a good one for Chris to do. He would have to tone down the screaming but he would be able to sing the chorus well.

Oh, I hadn't heard of Shakira either. When she started singing I switched it over to Lost.

A battle over AI? :rotfl: Thanks for informing me "there's a whole big world out there", I didn't know that. For someone claiming not to want to start a battle, you sure are condescending.
You set it up to be that way. Weasle out anyway you want.

She was singing with Wyclef Jean, and it was their new song "Hips Don't Lie". My favorite song of hers is "La Tortura".

Love Martina, except Carrie sang "Independance Day" a few times last year and even put it on her first post American Idol CD so it'd be too recent and too open to comparisons I think...

A few random thoughts after last night:

- Speaking of my girl Katherine...while I don't think she deserved to be in the bottom 3, I'm kinda glad she was. For one thing, I think she mailed in that performance the other night (either that, or I've greatly overestimated her singing talent). For another, it will goad those of us who are fans of hers to vote so that she stays around a while.

- I said it before and I'll say it again: Lisa has a great career ahead of her on the Great White Way should she choose to take that route. If Diana Degarmo can get a roll on Broadway (she is a supporting character in Hairspray), Lisa should be a star.

Totally agree about the Katharine thing. I actually may have to vote for her next week.

On another note, I actually just saw Hairspray last month and Diana Degarmo was actually really good in her role. I agree that Lisa may have what it takes to make it there.

Yes, I would definately use the word "HOT" to describe Chris.
He is definately my type.
Hmmm... well maybe the guys don't work that way. I haven't heard any derrogatory comments about aspects of the appearance of "pretty" guys (like Ace).

Now, see, it's all subjective. To me, Chris is hot ("pretty"). Ace is icky. He is too self-appreciative for my taste, kind of like Constantine. I think Chris didn't realize how hot he is until now. I also think that he's at risk of becoming too full of himself as well, though.

Okay....I've finally read the past 10 pages and have several comments.

1. For those comparing Bucky to Tim McGraw...I'm with Nancy on this one. No way is he as good as Tim. I've seen Tim at least 3 times live and Bucky doesn't even compare...that being said...he did an OK job this week.

2. Kellie would NEVER survive on Nashville Star. She would be the first one out. The talent on that show is 10 times what she has. So far this season I'm predicting that one of the guys will win Nashville Star.

3. Chris could sing me the phonebook anyday...however I don't think he did that Creed song justice. He needs to do a ballad for Country night.

4. I voted 50 times for Katherine Tuesday evening and only got 1 busy signal so I knew that she would be in the bottom 3. I'm kind of glad. That will boost her fans to vote more and it will humble her a bit. I feel that she was getting an ego from all of Simon's positive comments.

Now...predictions for this week:

Chris doing Shamless - that would be great! I could also see him singing "Indian Outlaw" by Tim McGraw. Shamelss wouldn't be bad. Indian Outlaw would be horrible. Love Tim, love the song...but Simon would tear him a new one for doing that song.

I'd love for Bucky to sing something by Gary Allen or Chris Cagle! Bucky would do well with another Garth Brooks song.

Kellie - I could see her singing Mindy McCready or Deana Carter I agree...she could do either of those and be OK. Do not let her sing another Sara Evans song and heaven forbid she try a Martina or Leann Womack song.

Ace - Keith Urban Ace could get away with a Keith or Kenny song. Maybe "Old Blue Chair"??

Taylor - Garth Brooks or some older country I'm voting for Taylor to do an old Johnny Cash song or maybe a little Waylon Jennings?

Katherine - Martina McBride I think Katherine is one of the top singers in the competition but I'm afraid that she would butcher a Martina song. I think she would do well with an Alison Krauss song.

Elliott - maybe Desperado by Clint Black? no idea what he could do.

Mandisa will do just fine with a Country song. I'm guessing that she'll do either a Gretchen Wilson or Wynonna Judd song.

Paris....I think she'll do her LA song again...It's from Coyote Ugly. Leann Rimes recorded the song for the movie soundtrack.

Are you serious? :confused3 Weasle out of what? This is just an AI thread, I think you might be taking it way too seriously. I give up you win, I lost, whatever. :rotfl:

Go Bucky! ;) :rotfl2:

I think the problem with this week was that it was only an hour long show for 10 performers. Just when you might have gotten in to the performance, it was over. 90 seconds isn't much time to engage the audience.

I agree. I felt that it was way too rushed. It made me feel a little stressed.

This is my first year watching so it's all new to me. Does Lisa get to go on tour? Isn't that for the top 10? I felt bad for Paris as you could tell she was sad for her friend. I remember when Lisa was crying when Will left. I can only imagine that some of these contestants form strong friendships and it's sad when it ends.
The teenagers apparently all got to be very good friends. When Kevin Covais was eliminated last week, I saw his interview on AI Extra and it showed all the kids being tutored together. They'd spend several hours each day "in school" so they really got to hang out together. You could tell how upset each of them has been when the others have been eliminated. Paris is the last of the youngsters still standing.
Edited to add: Yes, Lisa will get to go on the tour.

I beg to differ - Bucky is NOT getting symphathy votes - people actually like him - I do - I hate country music but I like Bucky - he's genuine.
I vote as many times as possible within that two hour period and this week all votes went to Bucky as I think he ROCKED!!!
Most weeks I vote for 5 or 6 of the contestants that I'd like to see hang around. This week I thought they all were so bad that I ONLY voted for Bucky. He was the only one who impressed me this week.

Eliot should lean towards Rascall Flatts...maybe "Skin"...or maybe even going back a bit...Keith Whitley.
I think Elliott will be the one contestant who'll have a real hard time next week. The others will find a way to make it work. I also just wanted to add that I loved Keith Whitley. Miss him. :sad2:

When I heard about the country theme, I immediately thought of a Martina McBride song for Katharine. As has been mentioned though, Carrie did Independence Day last season, so I don't think that should be her choice. How about This One's For The Girls, I think she'd do quite well with it.

Kellie did do a Martina song in the beginning and from what I recall it wasn't half bad. Probably not the best but not horrible. She did How Far.

Ok, I'm sitting here thinking of more song choices. Here's a few random ideas:

Elliot - Tell Me I Was Dreaming by Travis Tritt
Bucky - Best I Ever Had by Gary Allen or You'll Think of Me by Keith Urban
Ace - Amazed by Lonestar
Mandisa - Cry or There Will Come a Day by Faith Hill
