American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

With all due respect, "daddy to the princess"... I've never met a man who turned on his "bs" detector full blast with a girl as pretty as Kat.... take it from the daughter of a "daddy to the princess" who I fooled for almost 50 years!!

I don't think she's conceited or arrogant but I don't think she's a naturally nice or genuine person. Not that she can't be I just think she's young and a bit doted upon. I don't get a since of sincerity from her that pulls me in, it's hard to describe. She just doesn't make me WANT to be in her camp.

Don't get me wrong, I think she's talented and a good singer but it's hard for me to feel anything for her. She just seems somehow disconnected for me. I felt the same way about Chris, though, maybe it's me.

There is really no true explanation for the vibes we get from people. Sometimes it's from within or from our own experiences. All I know is when I feel for something or someone I do and it feels good! If I don't I just can't support them.

Robin, my "princess" is five :teeth: ...and certain thoughts I have towards Kat are anything but "fatherly." :rolleyes1 ;)

The criticism I've heard of her is that she wasn't crying her eyes out for poor wittle Elliott, and that she doesn't take criticism well. To the first point...well, she'd thought she was going home for the previous three weeks, so I don't know how you can blame a 22 year old kid for being excited that they're going to be singing in the American Idol finale when she thought she didn't have a chance. Just seems like a ridiculously harsh standard to me. As to the second point...well, if I'm not mistaken, Taylor is the one that has been most defensive with the judges, right from the first audition (quote: "I don't think some of these folks know who Joe Cocker is"). If anyone has shown arrogance during the results shows, it's been him. Kat looks like a nervous wreck every week.

Kat strikes me as a sweet young girl that doesn't deserve anywhere near the criticism she's getting from fans of other singers in the competition. Shoot, just look how excited she was to have "started in the right key" on Rainbow last night. Does her reaction to that really come off as "conceited" or "arrogant" ? Not in the least, in my opinion.

Sorry, Robin, but I think I am being impartial in this. I've said since the beginning that these two were my favorites, and that Taylor deserves to win based on his overall performances throughout the season. Coming from someone with "Soul Patrol" stuff splashed all over their signature, I hope you won't mind if I take your opinion with a bit of a grain of salt.

Oh, and one more thing for the Simon critics...he did not say that Taylor didn't deserve to make it to the last group, or that he shouldn't make it to the audience voting. He said that Randy and Paula would not send him past the Hollywood round. He was commenting on them, not on Taylor. He was wrong...but that's been a fact since Taylor made it to the top 12 semifinal "guys" round, before they even narrowed it to the top 12.

It's not like he said Taylor stunk or anything. He just didn't think Randy and Paula would put him past the Hollywood round.

I agree. I never got anything from Kat, but a sweet girl who was very excited to make it through. I think she comes off really well, and I don't understand all the criticism. I can be as petty as the next person, but I think she is being treated unfairly (and I am not a member of the Kat Pack).

What's the link to that other spoiler site, not DialIdol, but the other one that's been posted here previously?

TIA!

Sandy22,

This is so off topic, but I've been going nuts trying to figure out what "Scarp" means in your signature. I looked up the definition and it says something about a deep slope but what does that have to do with a girl working on a computer?

Just a quick check in, as I have been home since Monday afternoon with a severe case of strep throat. Though I'm mad because I had to cancel my Idol finale party, I guess better now than for my wedding!!!

Anyway, so I thought the show was pretty boring. :( I hope they make up for it with a lot of cheesy filler tonight!!!! WOO HOO!!!! I live for pointless filler!! Overall i thought they were both good but Taylor got my vote. As usual, the Idol written songs were terrible - but who expected anything else. ;)

Hopefully my meds will kick in by tomorrow and I'll be able to talk with all of you about the finale!!!

You expressed my thoughts, and I thank you. I don't like Kat, and I don't know why. I don't dislike her, I just would change the channel. I got the same thing with Chris, except that there is something about him that is repugnant to me. Again, I would choose not to listen.
Now Taylor, I enjoy. He has some quality that draws me in, and I listen to his music. But what do I know....I also am drawn to Elliotts style and his music.

A spoiler about tonight's Taylor performance from an interview with Dad Hicks in The Birmingham News. How about you can highlight to view it. I don't want to ruin anything for anyone since this is our last shot at Idol surprises for a long time....

One thrill, the family says, was meeting legendary record producer Clive Davis. They're also looking forward to seeing Taylor perform "In the Ghetto" on the finale with Toni Braxton.

That was my single favorite performance of the season.

I found this "recipe" on another AI board. Jsut had to share-

RECIPE FOR AN AI FINALS "CORONATION SONG"

1 cup Celine Dion
1 cup Mariah Carey
1 cup Whitney Houston (1980's vintage, must be MSG and Bobby Brown free)

Mix these three ingredients thoroughly, then set aside in a warm place until it attracts ants.

Meanwhile, take

200 Hallmark cards (no Shoebox Greetings)
100 High School Yearbook signings (preferably in rhyme)

and mix in a blender set to "Crappe". Add to above mixture.

Finally, stir in 1 teaspoon of Michael Bolton (must be added slowly, we recommend gloves), 1 recording of any school choir singing "The Rose," and a dash of Seacrest extract.

Bake at 350 degrees for one hour. Serve with Gospel Choir.

Thank you! :lmao: :lmao:

I have had a hard time putting my finger on what it is about Kat that I didn't care for. I finally figured it out last night.

When she sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" the first time, her vocal was beautiful. She did however, place her left arm behind her and tip her head back during one part of the song. It just didn't look natural to me and it stuck out in my mind.

Of course, when she sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" last night, I thought she didn't sound as good as the first time...and then she did the EXACT same thing with her left arm and tipped her head back at the EXACT same point in the song. It was then that I realized, she's not spontaneous. Every move she makes is scripted and rehearsed.

I want creativity and spontaneity in a performance no matter who is performing. I think that's where Taylor has the edge. He may be little bit wacky, and his vocals may not be right where Kat's are, but you never know what he will do and he certainly entertains you.

If I were to go to a concert of Kat's twice in the same night, I feel I would get the exact same performance both times. If I were to go to a concert of Taylor's, I think I would have two separate experiences.

I just re-watched last night's episode on my TiVo.
I actually think Kat's song could have been okay if she had done something with it. Are there rules saying you can't change the key of the song? And she should have totally been able to hit the end notes, but she was all over the place.

With Taylor's song, the beginning was pretty weak, but I think if they re-work that part, maybe it actually could be a hit.

LOL! Heck NO I'm not impartial at ALL, but I don't dislike Kat at ALL, which is different from the previous final twos in the past.

I said I don't think she's "conceited" or "arrogant"... I just don't connect with her... not at all. If so I'd haver HER splashed on my sig, believe me. The man who is there is there because he DID connect and in a way I've never had a connection before on AI. He has soul... something I require in my men. :teeth:

No debate, rev, you and me usually stand on the same side... :thumbsup2

A few more random thoughts:

- For the "coronation" song, the producers should pick about 10 to 15 different songs from the various submissions - with a good mix of styles from "slightly rockin'" to "jazzy" - and let the finalists choose what song they believe best fits them. Saddling either of the finalists with a song completely unsuited to their style is a travesty.

- They should never make them sing two songs they've already performed again. Stick with the 1-1-1 formula; one new cover, one "favorite" from the competition, and the coronation drek. As much as I enjoyed Kat's two songs the first time they were performed, they just lost something the second time around, and the same goes for Taylor.

- How anyone could watch the clips from the season they showed last night - including the one of Kat crying when they told her she was through to Hollywood - and still call the girl "conceited" or "arrogant" is just beyond me. :confused3 I usually have a pretty good "bs" detector, and I just don't get that from her at all.

- I absolutely guarantee that Kat will sound phenomenal on her album, where as Taylor will sound like...well, just like Taylor sounds (and no, that's not a bad thing). The thing with Kat is, when she is 'on her game", she is incredible. But she is not always "on her game," which is why I think Taylor should win the competition itself. However, in a studio, she won't have that problem, as only her best will go into the album. Because of that, I fully expect her to have a tremendous recording career.

- The whole "he'll be better off for not having won" thing cracks me up every time I read it. There isn't a shred of evidence supporting that theory over the five years of this show. Sure, some of the non-winners have gone on to do some great things. But the vast majority of the people that have lost on this show have done little-to-nothing afterwards. In my opinion, the "better off for not winning" crowd is just "sour grapes", and nothing more.

- As Bo last year led directly to Chris, I'm anxious to see what kind of people are attracted by Taylor's success. I doubt that very many of us have not seen some local "bar band" singers that we didn't think to ourselves, "wow...this guy (or girl) is really good." I hope that T's success will lead to a lot of those types giving it a shot next year. It can only serve to improve the talent pool, and I think we all benefit from that. :teeth:

Great post!! I agree with everything you said! :thumbsup2

ITA. I don't see her as arrogant or conceited. She's 22 & I believe has a bright future ahead of her.

Not to mention, I think that someone who is one of the final 2 in this competition that starts out with thousands upon thousand of contestants, she can show a little conceit if she wants. She should definitely be proud of herself.

I do think Taylor is entertaining to listen to - but IMO, to watch him is annoying. He looks like he is having some kind of spasm half the time.

Bottom line - I believe they'll both be successful regardless of who wins tonight.

I’ve been a Taylor fan from Day One and last night certainly wasn’t going to change my mind or my vote. But I do have to say that poor Kat DID get the raw end of the deal. That “My Destiny” song is just plain ewwwww! Who was the genius who thought this was a good song? I certainly can’t imagine ever hearing that on the radio and IF I were unfortunate enough to I’d change the dial pretty darned quick. Taylor’s song wasn’t great either, but it was a heck of a lot better than My Destiny.

How long before the labour pain jokes start about Taylor and his duet partner???

from www.mjsbigblog.com:

This ETonline article hints that there's a big surprise in store tonight:

"...Katharine revealed a few clues! "There's a big surprise that out of all the contestants only me and Taylor know about, so trust us it's pretty big, something that's never happened on the show!"

Nigel Lythgoe also hinted there's be some big surprises tonight on Ryan Seacrest's radio show this morning...

So what has never happened on the show before??? Anyone care to venture a guess??? I will, I say there will be a tie and both will win tonight!!
