American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread** Part 2

I don't know why he did that, but my conclusion is he either didn't feel he could, or didn't feel he needed to, show that he could competently showcase a song that doesn't have a long history.

Or maybe he feels, like some of us, that today's music stinks ...

The only current song I know is "Trouble" and that is because I've worn out my ipod listening to Taylor sing it :lovestruc .

A terrific night! :goodvibes It really is seperating the kids from the adults. I was unable to get through on either phone number for my picks of the evening, but here's my take:

Elliot: A good job on both songs, but for me personally, the vibrato is getting to be distracting. He's talented and a nice guy and has REALLY grown during the show, but is simply not in the same league as some of the others. HOWEVER, I enjoyed his two performances. :)

Paris: I don't like her one bit. I think she's fake (her stage presence is very rehearsed and not in a good way), and I don't enjoy listening to her "holding-her-nose-while-she-sings" style. I think she picked the totally wrong song with "Kiss", though it was better than her second song (which I can't even remember...oh yeah...that MJ Blige song). :sad2:

Chris:  oh...My...GOD. If I wasn't married I would be stalking him, begging to have his children (and I don't even WANT children :p ). "Renegade" had me rocking out like a fool along with my parents and younger sister who were visitng on their way home from my sisters college grad in FLA. They've never seen ANY of Idol this year and agreed that after seeing all 5, that CHRIS is in a class above and beyond the others by lightyears. :cheer2: I was so concerned (enough to yell at the tv) that he was going to lose his voice in his second song though :guilty: ..so I hope he reins it in with the screaming for his own sake. Best performer of the night.

Katherine: Her first song left me bewildered and trying desperately to assure my visiting family that she doesn't usually suck like that ;) . Thank GOD she had a second number, which I found both refreshing, interesting, well sung and bizarre all at once :lmao: . I was happy she didn't do that contrived "sitting-on-the-stage-steps" thing that the contestant often do, but this was a little strange, but FUN!

Taylor: My man was funny as heck and IS the "funky-white-boy" indeed! :rotfl2: The performance was so good (but my parents thought something was wrong with him for his spastic dancing...they did like the singing though). I LOVED it. The second song was not my favorite, but still good.

A totally tough call tonight but I think the bottom two will be Elliot and Paris. I personally HOPE it will be Paris going home, but you never know.... :rolleyes1

That seems very likely, and is a strong motivator for me to not vote for him.

Maybe they should have an Oldies Idol? :lmao:

Wait, wait, wait...you mean Paris DID actually use a dirty word???? I just read thelast couple of pages. When the sound cut out I said "did they just bleep her?" but my DH insisted the satellite went screwey.

Oh no she DIDN'T! Now she better go. How could the producers ok that move from her? (unless it was a plot by them to get her booted by us)

Could our resident Fox employee fill us in? Did she get bleeped or was it a technical difficulty during the show?

I am totally with you on this one. :lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc

Yo dawgs, listen up...sure Taylor is entertaining to watch, but that ain't gonna come across on the radio. That's what Simon's looking for. That's why he likes Elliot, he's got a really great voice...

I think the song Elliot performed last week could be released as a single right now...go back and really listen to this song...nobody can touch him.

I just wish Katharine would go home.

I don't know what it is about her...maybe she's trying too hard, or maybe she's just a little too into herself...but it's like she has a bag of "tricks" or something that she keeps sticking her arm into, hoping for that one thing that will make her a winner.

So far, none of them has done anything for me...except dislike her more.

Her version of "Against All Odds" sounded off-tune and was way too big for her last night. I used to think she was top two material, but her performances seem to be rotting rather than getting better.

Having said that, I think Paris is going home tonight...we'll see what happens next week.

I'm pretty sure I saw here someone post a link to past performances. I've looked back 20 pages and didn't find it :guilty:

I go to school tues night and normally catch up on TiVO but we had a glitch last night so I only got to see 3 performances! Would love to see Taylor and Chris' first ones.

Thanks!! :goodvibes

Don't know if she did or didn't...at the time we thought it was a satellite skip. We did notice several such skips throughout the show at our house - the screen actually went blank more than once last night. :)

I am just wondering what are the ages of those that love Taylor so much? I just dont get it. He is funny and amusing, but I just dont see him as the "American Idol".

I'm in my early 30's and a Taylor fan. I think the fact that he has a huge fan base is proof that AI is more than a popularity contest. Taylor is too quirky to win a popularity contest. What do I love about his voice? It's all about the soul. :thumbsup2

I also thought something happened with cable during Paris' performance. We had it happen a few times during the show also. Now I'm wondering what really happened. :confused3

You missed my point. I didn't say anything about the singers singing "their own original songs". What I said was that this week was about singing a song that has an established history and singing a song for which there isn't an established history. There are different skills necessary for each. For a song with an established history, you need to make people either forget the original or you need to exceed the original, to truly do well. For a song without an established history, you actually have to make people like the song, which is very difficult, since many people develop a liking for songs over time, not at first hearing. Seems to me Taylor just wants to sing "golden oldies" -- songs that people already have an firmly established feeling about. I don't know why he did that, but my conclusion is he either didn't feel he could, or didn't feel he needed to, show that he could competently showcase a song that doesn't have a long history.

Thanks for explaining. I still don't think that Taylor has to sing a cover of "new" material to prove himself though. You either like him or you don't. You were saying that he offers nothing "new"...that's because we haven't had the opportunity to see him perform his own music. He is definitely more unique than any of the other contestants IMO though and I don't think he plans on making a career out of singing covers of old songs (although Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow seem to be doing ok with that)!

Hey Everyone ... just wanted to readu up what others thoughts were on AI. I dont know if it was just me but nobody really caught my attention on both their performances. I am definitely a Chris fan tho ... in fact I dont really dislike anyone but I think its time for the IDOLS TO STEP IT UP!!!! You know what I am saying dawg! LOL :lmao: Sorry just had to say that!

 :cheer2: :cool1: I think they all are good singers - I should know - I cant sing a note! :rotfl2:

Another thing I loved about last night, is that now when you vote you get to hear their actual voices thanking you for voting for them:
"Thanks for voting for me, Chris..."
AHHHHHHHHHH! I could pretend that he was talking to me

I think he called me a Fox too! (Oh, wait mabe he said "watch tomorrow on Fox"-whatver, close enough for me!)

Yea, they each got at least one vote from me because I wanted to hear all the recordings! Chris sounded the coolest, Taylor's got a little annoying - probably because I listened to it so many times. Oddly, Paris sounded kinda normal on the phone.

Why would anyone want to ? (You might get some of it on you :scared: )

;)

Seriously...hearing "goat boy" on the radio is only likely to cause a rash of broken fingers across the country, as people jab at the buttons on their radios to just make it STOP.

:teeth:

I was listening to the radio a little while ago and one of the DJ's was saying that in one version of the Mary J Blige song, she says "Shhhh" rather than the entire word. They are thinking that is what Paris was doing and someone got happy with the censor button.

Is name calling really necessary?
I'm not a Taylor fan, but I don't call him derogatory names. He's just not my style but I understand other people like him.
