My Thoughts On The Evening...
PHIL: "Hard To Handle" Nice to see him without the guitar, just to change it up. He's a TON of fun to watch. I love this guy. Not a "singer" per se, but a real artist.
JESSICA: "Turn The Beat Around" This song, while upbeat, is not what I wanted to hear from her. It skews old. She's being drowned out by the band. She has VERY little stage presence, and I fear she could be another Pia. This isn't her best, but it's still good.
HEE JUN: "Right Here Waiting" This is a little breathy for me and wobbly. He sings much better when he's pushing the sound out. He finished it stronger than he started, and of course I still love the crap out of him.
ELISE: "Let's Stay Together" She really has a nice smokiness to her voice, and she seems much more comfortable doing this than her train wreck last week. It's not her fault but this song reminds me of wedding singers. Pretty.
DEANDRE: "Endless Love" I worry cause it never works out when mentors shake up song choices (and this song too skews OLD and weddingy...and it's supposed to be a duet!). He's a bit pitchy...maybe he isn't comfortable with the song? Ugh, falling back on the falsetto. Meh.
**PS*** It's like the judges and I are sharing a brain tonight!
SHANNON: "One Sweet day" Ugh...this just smacks of effort. She's no Mariah. It's out of tune. Yuck.
COLTON: "Broken Heart" White Lion? For Real?? Fascinating. He has an Adam Levine vibe. I love his persona on stage, and that he does music that he knows is "him". Well done.
ERIKA: "Heaven" Must everyone sing bad wedding songs? I hope she makes it something different. She should be standing still at a mic stand. Her wandering looks forced and awkward. She's reaching for notes and running out of steam. Good but not her best.
JERMAINE...wowser. Such a shock. The back peddling looks very bad for him. You don't get charged for falling down stairs.
SKYLER: "Love Sneakin' Up On You" Oh surprise, a Bonnie Rait song. Well HeeeHaw. This isn't doing anything for her...or me.
JOSHUA: "When A Man Loves A Woman" Enough of the wedding songs! But at least J-Dog knows how to sing the crap out of a song. Great control. Great emotion. I wish it were more original though.
HOLLY: "The Power of Love" I hate tonights song choices. This is okay. It's not the big power "moment" they seemed to be hinting at (that was Josh's). She hasn't done a dang thing to make it sound like it isn't great karaoke. She didn't even go for the big notes (other than the shaky final one).
