American Horror Story: Hotel

I'm still trying. I gave up halfway through Coven, and didn't even try with Freak show.....I just don't like the sloppy details... like not calling anyone when she discovered her son......experimenting with a young child just injecting him with her blood....still seems all over the place. What was it that made Murder House so great? I can't really put my finger on it. Perhaps it was that some of that stuff genuinely creeped me out. Maybe I'm just not that into vampires? I'll give it a few more weeks, but this season is teetering on Coven level for me.

I think Murder House was better because it was "smaller". It was just the one family in the one house, with one interconnected story. (Even the shoot off stories about Tate and the drys wife were still about the same house). Because they were only focused on one thing, attention and effort weren't split off everywhere.

While the other three seasons were also set in one main place/one main story, they all had a lot more backstories, side stories, etc. That's my opinion on it, anyways lol.

Yes. To me, that is the difference. And I think Murder House was more subtle. There were a few outrageous scenes but it wasn't like they were going for shock value.

I liked this week better than the rest so far. I absolutely loved the Liz Taylor story this week. Yes, so incredibly stupid to inject the sick boy! But the offshoot of that was pretty interesting. What a mess. I will say I like this better than Scream Queens. That gets worse every week and I barely pay attention to that when I watch.

I think it is both of these things that contributed to that season being so great. Thinking about it, I also think there was a lot of suspense in that season. I remember when I could hardly stand to wait until the next episode. Now, I am only waiting because I am so hopeful that the next episode will be the "one" that hooks me back in.

I've been thinking about this more and I also think Murder House was better because it was very real. A lot of the conflict and trouble faced by the characters was normal stuff...an affair, a teen feeling forgotten, a rocky marriage, the stress of trying to start over, the loss of a child. Sure, some of it got taken to extremes (not every angry teen is going to set his step-dad on fire, and not everyone that loses a baby is going to sew it together and bring it back to life, etc) but it all had very real, grounded roots. I think that was what made it better...it really was an 'american horror story' that felt like something you could see on the news.

Yes. You articulate exactly what I couldn't put my finger on. It was the most "believable" of all of the seasons. It really would be a horror if those things happened. Asylum had some of those same elements, then the alien arc kind of ruined it for me, personally. Coven wasn't really a horror, a weird Hogwarts? I can't comment on Freakshow because I never gave it a chance. I think this season's premise was attractive because it seemed to be a more "normal" setting. The vampires are kind of getting in the way, for me personally, but I'm still hanging in there....Hopefully next season will get back to the Murder House format...

Have you noticed we keep saying this...hopefully next season. Yet it never does. Each season just seems to get more out there, or at least more shocking, just because Ryan Murphy can. I am still watching too (for some dumb reason I even stuck out all of Coven), but nothing has been as good (but Asylum was my favorite of all).

I hear you. When I told DW that I wanted to watch this season, she said, "why, I thought we gave up?" lol. You deserve a medal for watching Coven til the end. Murder House and Asylum were the best, but Asylum did loose me a little. Coven wasn't even close to the same show. I feel like Hotel is getting back to the formula, some....just not enough yet. Seems like they have gone more "B movie" format than television show format.

What a wicked episode!! I think this is going to be my favourite season. Granted, I didn't watch Asylum or Coven but it sounds like I'm not missing much. I'm sad to see Finn go but we got some butt so it's ok I guess LOL.

Speaking of which, there were four different butts in this episode..wasn't expecting that. And, I'm not a prude by any means but holy cow on the language. It's crazy what they let on TV. I watch with my 15 y.o. daughter and it was a little weird at times.

I'm glad Sally wasn't in this episode, not feeling her at all..I'd be happy if we only had Iris, Liz Taylor, Finn (can't think of his characters name/too bad he's dead) and a few others.

All in all I think the season is getting better as it goes. Can't wait for next week.

One last thing..it was really cool to see how they tied it to murder house.

OH...does anyone else think Lady Gaga character is/was married to Evan Peters character?

I know this thread kind of died, just like AHS Hotel did for me, but I wanted to revive it to give my thoughts on the season. I did stick with it, which was painful at times, and I still don't know why I did. The finale was just as disappointing as the season itself. I'd put it below Coven (even though I gave up half way through that one), in ranking. Oh well...There's always the first two seasons.....

I stuck with it too. I think there was just too much going on. The episodes that focused on one storyline seemed much better.
I didn't like the ending. I was confused, thinking I had missed something.

I felt like I was missing something the entire season....Maybe if the title of the season was AHS:Redemption, or AHS:Twilight it would have made more sense.
To me, the season just lacked any sort of direction, which goes along with your sentiments of too much going on.

Exactly. There were vampires, ghosts, serial killers, and stories within each of those. The Countess alone had so many storylines going on (Valentino, John Patrick Marsh, Donovan, Tristan, Liz, the kids she turned, her baby, Angela Basset, the guy she married who had bought the hotel). That's a lot going on for one character and there were many characters.

What's amazing, even with the countless storylines, is that I found myself bored still. I think it's because 80% of the storylines were disinteresting, or just plain dumb. Its quality, not quantity....

Let's all say that familiar phrase...."maybe next year"......

I guess this just proves the point..different strokes for different folks. I loved this season!! Sure, there was a lot going on but that's what kept it from being boring. For the PP who said there was too much going on..not really. In the case of The Countesses baby, they mentioned it but didn't make it a storyline so it didn't really interfere with anything.

I admit, I was totally thrown off when Tristan died and then seemed to resurface but when that storyline played out it made sense.

My daughter and I did say though, that they should have made it a bit more obvious as to who was a ghost and who was a vampire..that got a bit tricky at times.

All in all, an awesome season. Now to wait for the announcement of the next one.y daughter thinks maybe they will be forest people or something...

P.s. I thought murder house was lame and boring..

I liked this season- it was more coherent than the last 2 and didn't have as many dropped plot points or loose ends.

I'm hoping next season has something to do with the school- they mentioned it several times during the final episode.

I wasn't crazy about the beginning of this season... the middle was good... the last bit was blah but I loved the finale.

I wish I could watch an entire show of Liz and Iris running the hotel.

It didnt make sense to me that "Sally" then also played the reporter and that the Devils Night Crew just warned her-why didnt they just kill her?

My guess is that they didn't want to be stuck with her at the hotel forever..plus, everyone knew she was going to the hotel so it would be pretty suspicious when she just disappeared.

I loved Liz and Iris and will miss them.
