Is an American girl too young for an almost 10 year old girl? My dd saw the catalog the other day, and said she wants one that looks just like her. I'm worried it might be too young for her. Don't get me wrong - I'm not in a hurry for her to grow up, it's just that these dolls are expensive and I don't want to waste money! What do you guys think?

My daughter was 9 when she got one. She got Kaya. She just wanted the doll. (She is 1/2 Native American) She has never played with it. She has a few of the different outfits for her. She is 13 now and still has the doll up on her headboard with some other NA things she has. I wouldn't worry about it being too young. If she plays with it great, if she doesn't that's okay too.

My DD wanted one for Christmas when she was ten. She doesn't play with it some much now (she's 12) but she still keeps her on her bed.

You might get another year out of it, but my DD stopped playing with hers when she was about 9/10. She has passed them on to her little sister now.

9 is perfect - go for it! The girls in the stories are mostly around 9.

I say go for it.

My DD(10) got her first American Girl (Maya) last year for Christmas and I just ordered her another AG for Christmas. She played with Maya after she got her for a few weeks. She collects dolls so I am not concerned if she doesn't play with them. She has a younger sister she can pass them down to if she wants.

No, I don't think 9/10 is too old for American Girl dolls. My DD-10 is getting the new Elizabeth doll for Christmas. She doesn't play with her dolls too often, but still does every now and then. She loves to display them in her room though. I think they are great dolls!

My DD9 is getting Felicity for Christmas. (SSSSHHHHHH....it's a secret :goodvibes ) She actually asked for one 2 years ago but I felt like she was too young for such an expensive doll. I was afraid it would end up at the bottom of her toy box with a new hair cut. I think 9 is a great age for this kind of doll.

My DD is 10 and she keeps it on her bed. Occasionally she changes her outfit.

I got my first American Girl doll when I was in first grade. I have four. Josefina, Kit, Felicity, and Kaliegh.

My DD was 9 when we took a trip to American Girl Place in Chicago. She had such a blast! She put her dolls away in 6th grade. She's saving them for her daughter.

1st off I have to say that when I was around 10 years old, maybe 11 or older cabage pacth dolls came out. My friend next door was a year younger then me and got one. I knew I was a little old for one, but man did I want one. My friend played with hers all the time. I still kind of want one because I never had one. (My own DD could care less or I would get her one!)

I think that is a lot of money, but if she really wants one and if you would buy it for her if she was younger why not? We are in such a rush for our girls to grow up now a days. Why? Let's let them stay young as long as they want to. :goodvibes

I think a lot of the AG stuff is good for older kids anyway. There is a lot of hx and other lessons to learn in it. :goodvibes

I am waiting until my DD is a bit older, I don't think she can take care of one just yet or appericate it more then just a normal doll. (she is 4.5 years old)

My daughter is 12 and she just bought Marisol for herself.

She has 5, including Bitty, and has Kit on her Christmas list. I think at this age, it's more of a collector thing, like sports or disney collectibles, than playing with them. She just likes them and likes to 'have' them.

Do it! While she still wants "little girl" things! It won't last too much longer. And it's a doll she will be able to pass to her daughter. DD10 got Nellie last year for Christmas. I don't regret it for a second.

The are actually not recommended for children under age 8. They aren't like Barbie dolls or other "baby dolls." They have the accompanying books and such that teach history in a fun way. DD9 got her first one last year and plays with her a fair amount. Her cousin is 14 now, and has recently decided she's too old to play with hers :( but she still displays them.

There are even American Girl clubs at some bookstores where they have meetings and AG crafts, and stuff. I think DD would enjoy that but haven't found one near us. Most of them are for 8-12 year old girls.

I would get her the doll, I think she is the perfect age for it!

I would get her one...my DD is 7 was 6 when she got hers *Kersten* and loves to play with her...She has really taken care of her too...so I'm glad she is enjoying her as a doll and not just as a display...( we have a ton of collector barbies that we don't touch)

She just started reading the books too.

No, not at all -- they're a big hit w/the 3rd and 4th grade girls in my school!

Isn't the recommended age for AG dolls 8?????

Gee, if 9 and 10 year olds are outgrowing them, maybe I should of gotten my DD one when she was 6. I have been waiting for her to be old enough to take care of her. At 7, I still don't think she is ready. Next year.
