I usually lurk but you Budget Board ladies and gents seem to know a lot about all manner of odds and ends...

My 7 year old niece is getting an American Girl Doll for her birthday and my sister in law has let friends and family know that outfits and playsets for the doll would be appreciated. There's one problem... I don't live near an American Girl Doll store and almost everything for this particular doll is not available online right now! (It's the MacKenna doll, in case anyone is wondering.) Since there are only a limited number of years left that I will get to watch her eyes light up when she opens a toy I don't want to get her a gift card so she can get the items when they are available. I want to get her a toy.

Is there anywhere else I can go to find these playsets and outfits? Other strategies?? Thanks.... :)

There is always Ebay-but will pay marked up prices. If you want AG McKenna items your best bet will be AG. Some items marked back order are shipping early. So that may be an option. You can also call a store with personal shoppers and ask them to ship items to you(if they have them in stock).

does she really only want things that are specifically for this doll? Have you looked at any of the accessories or outfits or furniture from any of the other dolls? They are all interchangeable You might find something cute that is technically in another dolls "line". My DD had things from many of the dolls, not just the ones she had.

For furniture that fits the dolls many of the craft stores have things that work and Target has things.

I understand completely about wanting to get a toy not a gift card.

Sorry to hear that your niece is getting American Girl dolls. It is like little girl crack! :rotfl2:

If we had invested all the American Girl money spent instead of wasting it on dolls that sit on a shelf...:sad2:

I don't regret a dime I spent on my DD's American Girl dolls! She loved those dolls and played with them many, many hours. It is one of the few things left that let little girls be little girls and play with their imaginations rather than it being done for them.

She still loves them and they are on display in her bedroom here at home and she is 20.

You may try calling a store directly and seeing if they can pick and send to you?

Same here. My dd is 9 and is currently in her room playing with her AG dolls. She saved her money and bought Makenna in April and just bought herself the loftbed, her dog and 2 outfits....all with her own money. I just paid for shipping..

Not sure if you're near a Costco, but ours currently has a McKenna set that includes some books (although I'm not sure if one is the book included with the doll) and accessories to do gymnastics style hair. They also have a kit for last year's doll of the year too. ($19.99)

I also would recommend you look into some of the other dolls clothing, accessories, etc. unless you know that the McKenna items are truly the only things she wants. As a PP said, this is like little girl crack and once they get started, they want everything!!

And.....I also do not regret a dime spent on these dolls (and we are at 13 and counting). There is a story behind all of them, educational benefits, creativity and it has become a hobby for all of the girls in the family to play with them, drool over the catalogs and even make clothes for them. Yes, it's an expensive hobby, but one I will always support.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 My DD has 5 of them and if she wasn't already 11, I'd be getting her McKenna for Christmas. She still plays with all of them and I enjoy watching her being a little girl, instead of a make-up wearing, boy-crazy snotty tween that is obsessed with a cell phone.

I don't regret a dime we've spent on them (and there were plenty of dimes spent! :lmao:) and all the accessories she has. She loves them and plays with them and that is all that matters to me.

heck, my DD IS 11 and is begging me for Marie-Grace. My favorite thing is sewing for them. I almost want one for myself. PP's are right, Target is a great source of goodies. Camping set, sewing set, outfits, tea party set. Check it out!

I have Molly and Kirsten (and about 100 outfits!) that I got in the early to mid 90s when I was little. I cannot wait until DD is old enough to play with them. I played with them until I was like 13. They definitely are dolls that can be passed down to your daughters' children.

Thanks for all the great advice! :) I texted my sister-in-law to ask if it was okay if I got items that were not specific to MacKenna and she said that would be fine, and that she understands a lot of that doll's items are not available. I think I will look at some of the other outfits - but my gosh, there is a LOT to choose from! Maybe I will narrow it down to the ones that have a matching child sized outfit...

I wish my sister-in-law had chosen one of the dolls from another time period. That would have been wonderful and very educational. Maybe if my niece likes MacKenna, I'll get her one of those for Christmas.

Is your neice into any sports or activities such as ice skating, gymnastics, etc. They sell toy sets for many things like that. My daughter has ice skates and a skiing outfit. None of those technically go with her AG doll. She has the Rebecca doll, and it seems like that doll has nothing fun.
She also got an AG bed that went with a different doll.
Her new "want" is the piano. But at $150, its gonna be awhile.

I'm sure your niece will love whatever you get her.

hope that helps

Thanks for the code! Just ordered DDs birthday gift and was able to use the code! Woot!

michaels has cute clothes that fit AG. We have the white eyelet nightgown and crocks.

AG has great sales so keep your eyes open. The books are great and they have nail and hair, friendships, etc. as well as all of the doll books. DD had a slumber party and we made the dolls sleeping bags and little pillow out of fleece it was a hit. I cut everything so the girls only had to tie.

Instead of clothes, you might consider some of the other types of accessories too. My DD loves things like the Salon Chair, or the Bathtub or the School Desk or the Fiesta Picnic set.

My DD (almost 9) has no problem with the knock off items from Target....I don't think she even knew the difference until she started looking at the AG catalog:thumbsup2

Another place I have found lots of very well priced clothes for her dolls is at art/craft shows. Always some ladies selling cute outfits. Grandma, Auntie and Mommy are worse than DD is about them :-) She has some really beautiful outfits for far less than from AG. They are better made, too. I have also seen matching girl/doll outfits. DD has had a couple.

Sears has also sold a line of little girls dresses with matching AG size dresses.

My daughter is 28 now, but she has a very early Samantha. These are beautiful dolls and well made for the most part. My daughters Samantha still has beautiful hair.

I should have known better than to open this thread as now I want this dolls dog! We have a Golden Doodle. She has long hair on her ears, like this one and short (we keep her clipped) poodle hair on her body. Just like the toy. :lmao: She is a light golden though, so there is that difference to dissuade me.
