My daughter has Kaya which originally came with braided hair. In the back I noticed that the hair was a little nappy where the part should be. Fast forward a year when my daughter wanted to remove the braids. Well Kaya's hair is disgusting now! It is frizzy and unmanageable. You can't comb it. You can't leave it down because it is a big frizzy mess. It can't be rebraided. Is this normal? For the $$$ you'd think the hair would be better.

Secondly, my daughter now wants another doll for her birthday but one with straight hair that comes loose (ie not braided or in a ponytail). How will this hair behave???? Does it quickly look crappy?

Did you try to call customer service about the original doll? We have found the AG's customer service to be the best. Or - you can send it to the doll hospital for a new head

Maybe you cuold convince your DD to get one of the AG dolls of Today - with short hair.

I guess one of the important things about the hair - be sure to brush it with the wig brush that they sell. Check their website - they most likely will have hair styling tips there somewhere.

And - another option if you live near one of their stores - they do have a "doll hairstyle salon" at the Chicago store - probably in NYC's store too - just don't know that for sure - i've never been to that one.

I have Addy and removed her braid long ago. Mom made the mistake of buying us the hair care kit and I couldn't resist the urge to play with it. From how you're describing it, the hair on Kaya sounds a lot like how Addy's is right now.
I think the only real option is to send it to the doll hospital for a new head (roughly $30 I think). That's going to be one of my Christmas presents this year, since I know longer play with Addy, and want her restored to a better condition.
I think the ones with straight hair are a little more manageable, because my sister and stepsister both have Kit and her hair is just fine. My sister also has Kirsten and that hair came braided and is similar to Addy's now.

My DD has Josefina, another one of the ones with coarse hair and of course she took the braids out too. When we had Josefina's hair done at American Girl place, they told us it was best to always keep braids in the hair if you have a doll with coarse hair. They rebraided her hair and it looked better than it had, but not quite the same as when it was new. I wish American Girl would include some kind of warning with the dolls with coarse hair because kids naturally want to play with their hair.

My other DD has Kit (smooth hair) and her hair looks as good as the day my DD got her - three years ago, I think.

The only brush we use is the one that we bought from American Girl.

For all of the AG dolls with long hair, it'll be similar. Unfortunately, the quality of the hair on AG dolls comes nowhere near the price. If you want it to stay as nice as when the doll arrived, you basically can't do much with it (and what little girl won't want to play with her doll's hair?), so it's frustrating.
