Amending a return during tax time?

I amended a return from a few years ago. My tax person said to send it certified (with receipt) so that it's documented when the IRS received it because it tends to get "pushed to the side" right now. Anyone have experience with this? Does an amended return take much longer to get processed during tax time?

I should have done that. I just put mine from 2004 in the regular mail today.
