As we enter Christmas shopping season, I wanted to offer a quick suggestion/reminder.

If you do any shopping on Amazon, checking out through AmazonSmile allows you to have 0.5% of your purchase amount donated to the charity of your choice.

smile.amazon.com

It works exactly the same as Amazon, same products as Amazon, same checkout process as Amazon, it just says AmazonSmile at the top instead of just Amazon.

There are TONS of charities to choose from! I personally donate to a local animal shelter that I know doesn't get as many donations as some other things in my city.

It is an easy way to give back without really doing anything extra at all!

Thanks for posting!

My DD suffers from a very rare genetic disease. There is no federal funding for research. Our parent run organization is one of the charities listed with Amazon. 0.5% seams like such a small percent but for charities like ours, a small amount is better than nothing.

Our accounts are set to the International Society for Mannosidosis and Related Storage Diseases (ISMRD)

I learned about this just recently on a thread somewhere on these boards. I've been donating to my local SPCA ever since.

Ours is set for Wolfson Children's Hospital (here in Jax). Earlier in the year, I had it set for the National Kidney Foundation.

I totally forget to check on this.
I do the same thing with Upromise.
I've missed a lot of 'free' money being less than thoughtful when purchasing online.

I have mine set for Give Kids the World. I love this and its so easy!

It's great, so easy to use -- and if you forget to sign in through smile.amazon.com, they will often give you a popup to remind you.

I have mine set to the local humane society right now, but there are so many options. I might switch mine to the library for a while soon.

I love Amazon Smile. I have our favorite cat rescue as our recipient. Like another charity above, this one is very small and grassroots. They DO notice every .5% donation they get and it does make a difference to them.

Amazon Smile is a great program ,but I learned recently that if the charity is an "affiliate" ( I think that's what it's called) the organization can receive a great deal more. For example, my preferred charity can get 1/2% from Smile or 8% from their affiliate link. I have no idea what the difference is, all I know is my charity sent out a Facebook message with the link asking us to use that instead of Smile and it apparently has been quite lucrative for them. Might be worth asking your charity about...

My Amazon Smile charity donation goes to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. It's essentially a free emergency no-questions-asked daycare/overnight care where a parent may drop their babies or children off to prevent them from the possibility of abusing/hurting their child in a moment of frustration, panic, or emergency. It's not only to prevent abuse but is also available for emergencies where the parent cannot take their children with them. It's a fantastic program and I can only imagine how much child abuse/neglect/murder is prevented because this program is in place.

Good to know - I will look into that!

A word of warning: check your prices before you buy! I was just about to buy something on amazon for 54.99. When I logged in again with the smile link, it was 65.99. So Doctors Without Borders would have gotten 5%, but the cost was 20% more. Not a fan of that tactic.

Great reminder. I order a ton of stuff on Amazon and donate to an animal rescue. Feel great knowing my purchases help them out
