Amazon Fights Back: New Wi-Fi Kindle for $139 on Aug 27

Anyone can access an e-library and put the book files on their computers. The touch screen is a flittery thing that contiunally refreshes itself and has a great deal of lag in it. I wanted the Nook at first. I liked the idea of a touch screen... but it's not responsive like an itouch.

I get library e-books from the online library and reformat them for my Kindle. I love the fact the new Kindles have a larger capacity and are much lighter. Competition is good!

Hi Pirate girl ---

My library has books that say Adobe PDF or Adobe EPUB ebooks.. Can they both be converted for Kindle? Is one easier than the other?

Thanks --- This is the first I heard that you can do this... I just want to be sure that they all can be used.

Also, for the PDFs... I saw that you said that you can "zoom" them.. is that kinda like the iPod touch pinch and zoom?

(I really want one of these things... but I know that I want to use the library books)

TIA..

I pre-ordered my Kindle 3G :thumbsup2
I cannot wait to see if I can change the format from library ebooks to the kindle as someone posted earlier!

That was my question too, someone here said yes they can be converted. I had hear about it but not actually having a Kindle I couldn't test it! I pre ordered my Kindle since it seems it's true... once it gets here I'll have DH work on converting!

You can zoom in and out with the joystick controller. With the K3 it appears you can copy and paste portions of PDF's as well.

Library EPUB books can be converted for use on the Kindle. You will need the Calibre library book managment software in addition to the Adobe Digital Edition sfotware that the library uses to place the books on your computer. You will also need a script to run on the file before putting it into Calibre. There are programs which automate the process for you and if you google a bit you can find them, or you can simply find the epub scripts for your particular operating system and run those. EPUB is easier than PDF and from the reports I have read, Kindle will soon be able to handle those natively. Good luck!

See above. Also, the Calibre e-book software converts all kinds of e-book formats; nook into kindle, kindle into nook, sony, etc. - especially nice if you have more than one type of ereader inthe household. My daughter has a Sony and I convert books I have purchased for the Kindle for her device.

... Regardless most people think that the WiFi only models of all the brands will be down to $99 by next summer if not sooner. Just lots of rumors swirling around at the moment though.

:banana::cool1::dance3::yay:
Oh if this is true DH might just get my current Nook and I'll buy a new one with 3G (hopefully international)... :lmao: :rotfl:

I thought the place where you are has to have At & T connectivity to use 3g?.

Nop, they use a variety of providers to have coverage. AT&T is no way near my country for instance, but I can use 3G 24/7 with perfect coverage. Same experience in other European countries I've done with the Kindle. Amazon tends to have a pretty acurate list on their website which countries offer coverage. AT&T is one of the providers they use, but if need be they also use others around the globe.

This new Kindle has me doing :yay::woohoo: . We don't really need the 3G -it's not like Amazon can offer a wide variety of Dutch books- so having a cheaper option is attractive of itself already. It weighing even less is also a big plus for me. Each ounce extra I have to support with my hands means less time I'm able to hold on, so the lighter the better! :thumbsup2 And best of all; the price! For compareances, e-readers with alike features do at least $325 and easily more in my neck of the woods. And no pricewar in the predictable future.

We've already decided on getting a new Kindle without the 3G option while at WDW. We'll be there for 3 weeks, so even if things get somewhat delayed with the pre-ordering and all, we've got enough time. Only have to work out how I'll put my books on the new Kindle while at WDW. Besides, it's almost the price of another one in shipping and importing fees to have one shipped home.

My dad will be taking my current Kindle along on his trip to Asia, during the same timeframe. I can use the new one after all, but want to have my selection of Dutch books on there also. (and need some on their for work  ). I can mail them to the Kindle-account for the new one, but that would seriously drive up the costs with $0.99 a piece and a couple of dozens to get on there. Definately don't want to lug along my laptop, so that option's out also.

Will have to find out if the business centers at the WDW resorts will allow me to use an USB-connection on the computers. If so, I can simply transfer the books from a USB-stick and be done with it.

If not, guess I have to give serious thought to that daydream of getting myself a netbook while in the US also. The prices are a lot nicer than back home -yet again- but I'm cheap, I want a better price still. :rotfl::angel:

I am new to this whole Kindle thing I have a question about library books. I have read about Calibre in a few different places. I saw some mention that this won't work if the ebook has DRM. Is this something that most library books have?

Best bet for you would be a Nook then. The kindle is not very library friendly.

My library doesn't seem to have very many e-books so this isn't going to be my main source of books. I was just wondering since there seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there.

It's tempting, but I'd rather have an e-reader that is compatible with other formats.

Calibre can be used to convert any format e-book into any other format for your particular e-reader. DRM must be decoded or unlocked before conversion. This is true whether you are converting a Kindle file to Nook, a Nook file to Kindle, an Epub to Kindle, etc. I convert my Kindle books for my daughter to read on her Sony e-reader all the time. An Adobe Epub DRM licensed e-book provides the borrower with the right to read that book, for the duration of the lending period, on ANY device.

I would suspect more libraries will jump on the e-book bandwagon in the near future. Unfortunately, the lending process mirrors that of traditional books; limited availability, wait lists, holds, limited time to read once you get it, etc. For people who appreciate immediate availability and complete ownership, a device which can download books just about anywhere in the world might be a better choice.

Calibre can be used to convert many format e-books to many other formats, so long as the file does not have DRM. Unfortunately, it is not legal to "decode or unlock" the DRM on e-books that do contain it (do I think that's a dumb law that causes hassle for legitimate purchasers and doesn't prevent pirates? yes), which is what you'd have to do to convert a DRM e-book to another format . This is why I refuse to buy e-books with DRM.

Also, an Adobe epub DRM licensed e-book can only be read on any device that supports Adobe DRM and supports the epub format, which cuts the Kindle out of the equation because I don't think it supports either of those things.

Many people feel the same way you do. I'm sure the ebook world will go the way of other analog and digital media formats; vhs, beta, blu-ray, ipod, mp3, DVD, CD. My guess is a higher price point is around the corner for those who eschew DRM.
