Amazing Race #22, NON-spoiler thread!

That's about the 3rd or 4th time I've seen that they needed to memorize the song. They didn't. They memorized a line that was displayed on props. They make it sound like there were Americans who were made to profess their love to Vietnam and Socialism. And that's just not true.

I understand the B52 argument a little more. But I think it's important we remember that the War is just as much a part of their culture and history as it is ours.

I don't know enough Race history, but this isn't the first time they've gone to Vietnam. I don't understand why this trip was so much different than the last. I do believe that people may have overreacted a bit to this, unless there is some other significance to the memorial that I do not have knowledge on. As for the song? It just reminded me why I'm glad this country isn't Socialist. (And before anyone jumps on me, my father is a Vet who served during the Vietnam War, but not in Vietnam, so I do "get it." I'm glad the Amazing Race issued the apology, and I think it's time to move on. I think it was a big step for them to do it during the telecast and not just online.)

As for this Leg, Joey has got to stop acting like a child over everything. It's getting old.

Agree with all you said.

Been lurking but figured I'd finally comment. First I liked the apology and am glad it was done during the show.

I'm liking Joey and Meghan, the voices get a little annoying but after watching his youtube channel of the last couple weeks I kinda get his humor.

Max and Katie have got to go. The "they stink" comments really rubbed me the wrong way.

And to bring it all back to disney, did any body else start singing Timon and Pumba's hula song when they showed the warthog?

I was hoping Max and Katie would go, but was pretty sure it would be a non-elimination leg. Oh well..maybe next week??

And yes, my son and I started singing when we saw the warthog. :rotfl2:

Bah.

IMHO, showing the culture and history of the countries they visit is what the show should be all about. The Vietnam War IS a part of their history and ours, and there's nothing wrong with showing all aspects of it (anti-war and anti-American-involvement included). And they ARE a Socialist country. Their country, their way of life, none of our business. If they want to have a song about it, and CBS wants to show it, I don't see why they should have to apologize for it. :confused3

Then again, I guess I am just not offended all that easily, nor am I terribly flag-wavingly patriotic. So to me, and also everyone I was watching with, including my USMC vet husband, it just wasn't a big deal.

Again, just my personal opinion.

Same here. I even watched it a second time mid-week (love DVR) and my husband - who hasn't watched TAR with me in years, just didn't see why there was such a huge issue made. Oh well.

I liked tonight's show...thought it was interesting that Bates & Anthony were the only ones able to make fire.

I'm liking Pam and Winnie more and more...we'll see how long that lasts. LOL

Glad CBS apologized, and yes, AR has been to Vietnam before, but didn't visit a site where US soldiers were killed and taken as POW's. I think that is the difference. CBS didn't apologize for the song, IMO, but the biggest deal was for dissing the Vets, so I'm happy.

:thumbsup2 I agree. When she said that? Ugh. I wanted to reach through the TV and slap them.

(This isn't directed at you, more just to pose a general question.) If the Race had them visit Pearl Harbor, or the 9/11 Memorial, would they need to issue an apology? :confused3

I'm so happy that the hockey guys were the only ones who could make fire!:thumbsup2 And as for Joey....DH kept laughing at the number of times I told him that I would love to smack Joey in the face! Holy mother-of-obnoxious-girls! Waaaaaaay too over-the-top for my liking!

My DD kept on saying how annoying he was, he really is!!!! I really really wanted Max and Katie to go, they are jerks!!!

It's not the same thing at all. This is a show for American audiences and to show a site that 50 years later is still sensitive to many who served in Vietnam, with subtitled translations of a song glorifying a people that killed so many US troops was insensitive. CBS did the right thing

But he really is just a child....21! And he is definitely of the ilk of that age group.

I watch Joey's recaps all the time. I'm going to miss them whenever they get kicked off. Hated the "they stink" comment.

I agree with this. We've seen the contestant's participate in many, many cultural tasks. Bottom line of the song (they wouldn't know what was being sung), was note the ending line, read it and find it. I don't know enough about the B52 to comment on that, but it is a part of their history, and, sadly, a piece that reminds some of a terrible time in U.S. history. Do you really want that history forgotten?

Uh, not the same thing at all. Those sites are on American soil honoring our fallen soldiers/citiozens. That was a site on (former) enemy soil glorifying/honoring the downing and death of OUR servicemen, some of whom were then taken as POW's. BIG difference.

AR has gone to Vietnam before and one of the contestants was a vet from that era, if memory serves. I do not believe they went to similar sites, maybe because a vet was there so they were more mindful? Not sure. The whole episode was wrongly done. If they wanted to do the song bit to showcase what govt. they have, fine, but why play it again at the end? (Communist Broadcasting Station?) They should have just never gone to that "memorial" site at all. Much less have it be a part of the game. Glad they apologized and hopefully they won't be so bone-headed in the future.

I remember traveling in the South when I was very young (in the early 60's) visiting both North and South civil war battlefields. I remember a comment which I have never forgot from a gentleman from the South...he said, "I wouldn't go see the Statue of Liberty even if it could do a somersault." As young as I was, I made a conscious decision not to be so narrow-minded that I would deprive myself of meeting people having ideas different than myself or seeing different countries or cultures. I guess whether it is seeing or not seeing the B52 memorial or the Statue of Liberty, this kind of thinking will perpetuate prejudice for other people or countries.

The right thing...was never air the episode in the first place. We've watched AR for years, but it's no longer on my DVR.

It was shown as a memorial, which to me means a place to remember our history and those who died. I'm not sure how you jump to a place that glorifies the death of our servicemen. Unless there are facts that I'm not aware of, in which case, I do understand, but it was presented as a memorial.

So then should they not visit Normandy?

I guess I just am trying to present the question of where do you draw the line?

My understanding is that it isn't set up as an American memorial, but a reminder of what they did to conquer Americans in that place. It was bad form for TAR to have it as a stop due to the intent of the Vietnamese. Normandy is presented partly as a memorial to the Americans that died there.

This.

I dont think you are understanding what this memorial represents. All of the memorials you have mentioned, are to honor our fallen Americans. This did not honor those that were shot down, it praised Americans being shot down. Kind of a woohoo looked what we did, we shot down those American planes. I think if AR went to a site glorifying German Nazis you would get the same response, esp when your audience has a good majority of Americans watching.

I am not ready to give up on AR, I think it was in poor taste but they did apologize. The song was weird but if that is their govt then fine, but it was weird to play it at the end.

Why would it be set up as an American memorial? It's in Vietnam. The show involves world travel and part of that is seeing the world from the point-of-view of people from other countries. Otherwise, why go?

Exactly!!

That memorial is part of their culture, and when I travel to different places (admittedly not very often - darn finances) I want to experience THEIR culture.

If I wanted to only see the sanitized, pro-American side of things, I would just go to Epcot.

Considering that US B-52s bombed their country and killed their servicemen, it is a memorial and for us to criticize them for it is ridiculous and hypocritical.

I cannot believe this has become such an issue (not on the DISboards but elsewhere).

I just wish the most vitriolic anti-communists (again, haven't seen that here) would stop and appreciate the irony of themselves pushing for censorship and limits on free speech. Nice.

:rotfl: :lmao: It has always been thus... :lmao: :rotfl:

Ridiculous, isn't it? Don't like how TAR does things? Quit watching. But don't come to a discussion board (not here) or call CBS and screech about it.

This memorial is actual wreckage, that honors the killing of American soldiers. The pro communist song, along with the translation was unnecessary. I'm critical of CBS and TAR for their decision to tape and air those segments. Once again, our Vietnam vets are spit on.. It's disgusting.
