Amazing News! Trainers to re enter water with Whales!

What's more interesting to me than the fact that they will slowly work toward getting in the water again is the series of safety devices and protocols that they're initiating to be able to do so. It's unfortunate that it took another death to initiate these changes, but it's promising that they can go forward with a greater sense of safety and worker protection.

I wonder if installing the elevating floors in the show pools will cause lengthy closures of the stadiums and the suspension of shows for quite a while. Does anyone know how they've handled this during past renovations to show pools? Will there be no killer whale shows for an extended period or do they do some other kind of smaller show or demonstration while the work goes on?

From similar articles I have read, they are currently doing this process right now in the Dine With Shamu Pool. Which is probably another reason why its down for rehab. My guess would be, when they install these elevators in the main show pool, that it will be during a slower time of year. And from past experience of going to shows when the main show pool is down, I would imagine they would put on some sort of mini show for guests free of charge in the dine with Shamu area.

And I would just like to say R.I.P Dawn. Its been 1 year since the accident. Never forgotten.

IMO the news has really twisted this story. I doubt you will see any water work in the shows literally for years. Very sad...I miss the old Believe show so badly. OSHA totally overreacted. I'm waiting for them to stop all horse racing because jockeys get killed regularly or to shut down circuses because of the many cases of elephants killing trainers and members of the public or Vegas animal acts to get shut down because of what happened to poor Roy.

I agree with you that it will take awhile before trainers are in the water with the whales in show. They would have to build that elevator in the front pool like they have in the med pool. And I also agree that OSHA over reacted. Especially since Tilly was a whale the trainers never did waterwork with. OSHA is punishing all the other whales and trainers. Though it may take awhile to see waterwork in shows again, you have to be excited about this step in the right direction. Some thought that waterwork would never return in and out of show. But this proves Seaworld is taking steps to return the trainers into the water with whales.

Just wanted to say I LOVE your NKOTBSB pic
Thanks you

KBF - How long do you think it will take for them to install the lift in the main pool? I am amazed by this as I never knew such a thing could be done. Amazing tech. :thumbsup2

Yes, I was afraid it was gone for good, and it took away such an amazing part of Believe. At least they are working toward getting some waterwork back in eventually, although it may be a long time. I love the beauty and artistry of the orcas and humans working together in the water. We saw both Blue Horizons and Believe the other day, and seeing the close work with the dolphins and the gutted version of Believe made me so sad at what was lost, along with an amazing trainer, last year.

I'm not KBF, but the elevating floor is being installed as we speak at the Dine With Shamu pool in Orlando. It will be done by spring. I imagine that the main pools will be renovated during the off season after the busy summer season. It seems like they renovated the Dine With Shamu Pool in about 4-5 months.

Yes, I have heard this too. I would imagine T16GEM, that installation of an elevator in the front pool would not be started for probably a year at the earliest. I would be willing to bet that Seaworld closes down the main pool in a very slow part of the year, like mid January, and hosts shows at the current Dine With Shamu area while the front pool is renovated. Unfortunately, it may be a year and a half maybe even two years before we see waterwork in shows again. But atleast we have some sort of a timetable now.

With that said, I wonder if waterwork will be performed at Dine With Shamu shows, since they are installing this floor now in that pool. I could see trainers doing a limited waterwork session for Dine With Shamu guests. That could be something very cool to see.
