Amazed and Disappointed

I guess we're looking at this differently. My thinking was if MK was still open, it would alleviate some of the gridlock. You know, like giving park goers the option to ride other rides while they wait?
But at that point you would have to assume people are making the choice to go to Pandora that late at night simply because it is open at that time of night and I'm not certain enough people are doing that versus actively choosing to go to Pandora because they actually want to.

Perhaps if this was 1 1/2 to 2 years later I could see that as Pandora starts competing with Star Wars and Toy Story Land but most people who are hanging out in Pandora late at night are going because they want to see Pandora itself less so for killing time purposes.

Yes, reports are that wait times in evening emh are long for fop(2 rides open still just baffles me lol), because people are coming over from other parks when they close <=10pm. If MK was open to 12am to compete then Pandora would be better to onsite guests like early morning emh is perhaps. And MK open to 12am is also good to MK guest who want a good experience of not leaving with the taste of heat and humidity in their mouth..

I was there opening week and I feel it wasn't terrible. I'm sure once AK is in the EMH rotation they'll have other attractions open but the fanfare is all around Pandora and they have the extended hours for that specifically. Just wait until all the special hours and events for Star Wars.
Truthfully, this doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Draw everyone to Pandora, and have what seems to be a good number of them have negative experiences because it's too crowded. Why not AT LEAST have all of AK open -- people could experience the wonders of Pandora AND do other things AND do it all with some breathing room.

I hope that when they have all the special hours for SW land they are smart enough to AT LEAST keep all of DHS open. Better experience for everyone.

ETA: or might they be trying to make Pandora look MORE popular by not giving people any other option past 10pm??

I agree. I can understand them making a fuss over Pandora but if nothing else is open then some of that crowding is from people with nothing else to do. Why cause gridlock if you don't have to?

Is crowding really that big of an issue? I have only seen that here. Twitter and elsewhere doesn't seem to talk about that as much. All of AK doesn't need to be open and like I have said before Disney wants people to experience Pandora especially at night. I don't think they want to make Pandora look more popular. It looks popular during the day too when everything else is open and it has the longest waits in AK right now. To me it makes sense, I am trying to understand why it doesn't make sense to others.

Because all of those people who enjoy late night touring have to go to Pandora or DS. They are theoretically being jammed into a small area unless they choose the shopping.

I can understand that. I think without Pandora they would be restricted to just DS. So at least people have something.

I get that point myself but I have to honestly wonder how many people are actually in Pandora from 10pm-12am just to kill time and are trying to feel like they are getting more out of their ticket?

I mean we all know Pandora opened about a month and a half ago--would you choose to go to some place that just opened knowing that it likely will be crowded with people wanting to enjoy it and you're just there to get a few hrs extra of park time...not a place you really want to be but just park time? I mean that makes you actually part of the crowding problem that people have complained about here on the Boards.

I don't know. I don't think people are going to Pandora just because. My family isn't interested in emh anywhere other than MK. We're all night owls but I'd have no luck convincing them to go because they wouldn't hop for pandora. They might be "saving" pandora for those hours, but I think it's pretty unlikely they're going because they have no alternative.

If I enjoyed doing things at night and didn't like shopping and Pandora was the only area open, you bet that I'd be there. Personally I'd go shopping so I wouldn't be a problem.

I just don't agree at all on this.

"Disney wants people to experience Pandora especially at night" so much that for our own good, they'll give us no other option for entertainment onsite after 10pm during one of the busiest seasons!

Guess Disney knows best -- thanks, Disney! ;)

And I get that but are we really saying that there are enough people to really impact crowding are there just cuz?

Seems like not the best idea:

~Guest: "Hey let's go to Pandora cuz it's the only thing open now we don't care so much about the land but hey it's open and we want more bang for our buck so let's go there.
...(in Pandora now)...Why is this place soooo crowded why are there so many people here? I don't want to go on the rides because I'm not interested in them and I'm not so interested in Pandora plus the lines are too long soooo now all I can do is walk around in this area at night just cuz it's open"

Realistically just how many people are doing that? And if you are doing that you are contributing to the crowds you are complaining about. I mean that just sounds like a bad idea.

I honestly get the "having all of AK open" more than I get MK but I would assume based on Disney having both open for a short time and people posting that it wasn't crowded at all in other places being able to ride EE over and over that it just didn't make enough sense to keep all of AK open.

Not sure that's a fair conclusion. I wouldn't compare right at/after opening with weeks/months later during a busier period.

Earlier on, the enthusiasm for Pandora was really high, so I can see most people being there just for that (thus EE being empty). Now add BIGGER CROWDS WDW-wide for the summer (as compared with late May/early June), plus passage of time (some Pandora excitement dying down), and I think you'd fill the rest of AK -- especially with MK closed early.
