Ama Ama or Makahiki for dinner?

Makahiki is ok, but it's pretty normal buffet food. Ama Ama is more upscale dining than Makahiki. If you are after volume, go to Makahiki. If you are after quality, go to Ama Ama.

I agree as well. Ama Ama has a much nicer atmosphere and better food. Not just for dinner, but for breakfast and lunch too.

Depends on what you are looking for. As mentioned, Ama Ama is upscale dining so it's a quiet, more peaceful, prettier atmosphere with upscale/fine dining food options. Makahiki is much more casual and had many more food options. I'm a fairly picky eater, and the dinner menu at Ama Ama did not appeal to me so we went there for breakfast instead which was awesome. We made reservations at Makahiki for dinner at 6:30 - we were the first seating after the character dinner ended, and the restaurant really emptied out. It was only maybe half full so we had a nice table on the outside patio with no one around us, it was quiet, and we really enjoyed the food. Our server even brought us a special dessert afterward to recognize our honeymoon which was a nice touch.

We didn't dine at Makahiki. But while we enjoyed the food at Ama Ama, the meal was outrageously expensive - especially when we didn't have an especially nice view and the atmosphere was ruined by the large group with loud kids nearby. In hindsight we should have asked to move - but next time, we'll explore non-resort options for dinner.

That said - do NOT miss breakfast at Ama Ama! My aunt and I split the macadamia nut pancakes and the loco moco - what a great meal!

Couldn't agree more! The pancakes were one of my most favorite things I ate there. DH had the lobster breakfast sandwich which was also amazing.

Between those two I'd choose Ama Ama. Both are expensive. I like going to Ama Ama because the sunset view is amazing. We went twice on our last trip. The first with our kids, then cancelled the kids for our second and sent them to Aunty's. They didn't enjoy the food at all.

I really prefer Monkeypod, just a short walk away. Much better food and desserts!

Sorry to hijack this thread but do you know if Monkey Pod can accommodate a gluten-free diet?

Roys. Hahaha! We ate at Makahiki and I liked it just fine, until I got the bill. $120 (with tip) for two people, and the food was just average buffet. Haven't had dinner at Ama Ama, but the breakfast is worth every penny!

Is it possible to get AMA AMA's macadamia nut pancakes to-go?

They don't have a to-go window or counter, per se, but you could probably ask the host while you're there. My guess would be no but I'm not certain.

So true!

We also just did the Makahiki dinner buffet and really enjoyed it. The food was much better than anyone expected and better than when we did it on our last trip. Some favorites mentioned by our group was the tasty prime rib (excellent!), crab, Alaskan crab legs, and juicy jumbo shrimp. Other likes included rice crispy treats, corn cob, soup, and the salmon sashimi (sushi offering was sparse though). And everyone had multiple refills of the included pineapple and passion guava juices. Our group thought it was well worth the price (our almost 3yo ate for free and our other kids ate dinner at Aunty's Beach House).
