i thought large aperture #=small opening= less light= slower shutter speed ( open longer to let more light in was my thinking)

but
i just read an article where it said la=so=ll= faster shutter speed...

i would have thought he just typed it wrong except when he explained the opposite, he said small ap=fast speed.

so have i been totally wrong about this?

It is represented as a fraction. So in fractions, 1/4 is larger than 1/8. Just the same, f/4 is larger than f/8. Most cameras leave out the "/" and that makes it more confusing.

Kevin

he specifically said large / small openings ( ie small ap #with large opening) so he meant it how i asked and used "fast" and "slow" shutter, not numbers

but from the posts i am guessing he was just half asleep when he wrote it and i was right?

As far as shutter speed goes your correct.

I belive when talking about the speed of the lens, one of the conciderations is a wider apeture, having a more open lens means that it will be faster.

Hi Jan,
I remember this way:
small number = small DOF and the most light gets in

large number = large DOF but the least light gets in

I get so confused with small number =big hole. It probabaly has to do with the higher math calculations of cameras...

It can be made very complicated if you really dig into it, but for almost all non-professional users, it is just a simple fraction. I find it easier to think about it terms of everyday life. What is larger when cooking, a 1/2 cup or 1/8 cup? Just replace the "1" with the "F" and that is it.

Kevin

that was how i memorized it, small number =big whole and just hoped i didn't have to unlearn and relearn which would mean i'd be constantly wondering if i was right or wrong...

maybe i should write the guy so he can correct it( hehe "excuse me professional photographer guy, you wrote that wrong" signed "totally immature amateur")

he is right...large aperture is faster shutter speed.

the confusion lies in the following

large aperture =large opening=small number
small aperture=small opening=large number

A larger aperture allows a faster shutter speed for the same exposure.

Disney hints:

you forgot to correct everyone else who was using the same terminology, they all know what I meant.

if you read the original post you would see why I worded it the way I did..

but hey, thanks anyway.. pirate: pirate: pirate:

if you read the first sentence again that's what I thought.....but
actually he said the opposite of what mickey 88 said..he said the larger the aperture number and the smaller the opening ( which is right so far) the faster the shutter speed which would be wrong...if i had bookmarked the article i'd paste it but i didn't but any way, the guy was wrong which was what i wondered in the first place and this horse is definitly beaten to death :teeth:

Yeah! ;)

I am so totally unimpressed when someone passes themselves off as a "professional" photographer. All that means is they get paid for it, not that they are any good at it. A lot of our "amateurs" on this board do some very good work that is better than some professional work I have seen.

Way to go, Disboard photographers!!! :)

Well lets just say a few of the forums I frequent are a bit more contentious than disney

it could have been a simple mistake, but then again if you're going to publish it you should double check yourself....

you should write him, maybe you can get published...... :thumbsup2

from what i know about horses( which is not much more than i know about photography just to put things in perspective:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: ) that smiley horse is sleeping and that little man is going to be kicked clear across the barn any second( serves him right if he is stupid enough to not only stand behind him but also beat him) :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
