Am I too old?

My DH started guitar lessons at 46yrs and he loves it. He's never shown any particular musical ability prior to this endeavor either but he is progressing nicely.
Definitely give it a try if that's something you want.

My boss (almost 40) is starting to learn the guitar. It also helps that his young son is taking lessons, but I say, GO FOR IT!

Thanks for all the encouragement. BTW, I'm 43 with no musical experience.

Of course my DD 17 said I'm too old to even function.:cool1:

As an adult your learning curve is much more advanced then a kid's would be and you will probably catch on quite quickly. We see this with the kids in the band that pick up an instrument to play for marching band (like DD's friend that plays Oboe-but plays sax in the marching band). It doesn't take long to get up to speed on the new instrument. Can you read music at all? It would help to learn to do that if you can't.

The Mythbusters demonstrated that you can, in fact, teach and old dog new tricks.

So, NO, you are not too old.

You aren't too old. I had a friend in middle school whose parents taught piano and guitar lessons out of their home and a few of their students were in the 30's and 40's.

its never too old to play. My dad started at about age 30. Classical Guitar. He took private lessons until his instructor died (dad was about 55 at that time). My dad insists he himself had no talent, only self discipline and love of guitar and classical music. When he played, he LOOKED like he loved playing.

Go for it!

You should definitely give it a try. Look what happened to Susan Boyle!

Exactly. Go for it and let us know what happens. I am an over 40 musician myself and I thought I was a late bloomer, yet I am finding many of my contemporaries started even older than I did.

Enjoy, make beautiful music. I think what you're doing is great and you've inspired us older folk

This is a quote from my DH, "Absolutely not!" He said to suggest you to get a reputable teacher, one who knows different styles, including classical music, in case you want to branch out a little bit. The internet is just full of all kinds of free music lessons. Do not buy a real expensive guitar to start but don't buy the cheapest thing either or you will get frustrated. Good luck to you. I think this is wonderful!
